Lenses / Just bought a 70-200 f/2.8L IS II - A Few Questions
« on: December 31, 2013, 03:08:33 PM »
I finally sold my non-IS 70-200 and updated to this amazing piece of glass. So far I am incredibly impressed with the image quality it produces on both my 5D2 and 5D3. I just have a few questions regarding the proper use of some of the switches:

- I have heard in the past that it is not good for a lens to switch from the image stabilization off when the camera is powered on. Does it matter if I switch image stabilization modes from 1 to 2 when the camera is powered up, or should I turn the camera off before I make the switch?

- Another thing I noticed is that there is a slight wiggle, or a bit of movement left and right, when the lens is attached securely to the camera body. Is this normal to expect this slight movement?

Thanks!

Lenses / HELP 24-70 f/2.8 II Repair - Is this within spec?
« on: November 27, 2013, 01:06:48 PM »
After six weeks away, Canon finally returned my 24-70 f/2.8 II.

My complaint was a decentered element that I noticed using Reikan FoCal software because of the massive dips in the curve. Canon returned the lens to me saying they adjusted it and it is "within spec."

People who are familiar with this software, does this look like a "proper" repair and within spec?

This is before the "repair":

Now here are three tests I ran this morning after receiving the lens back from Canon.

Lenses / Bad Copy of 24-70 f/2.8 II?

This is what my aperture sharpness curve looks like. This isn't normal, is it?

Lenses / Scratches on inner barrel of lens
« on: October 05, 2013, 06:12:29 PM »
I had a hair that was stuck in between the outer and inner barrel of my new 24-70 f/2.8 II. Trying to remove it with my finger proved insufficient. I got some tweezers and managed to grab the hair and pull it out.

However, using the tweezers I noticed I made some very small (tiny) scratches on the inner lens barrel.

Is this cause for concern now or down the road?

Lenses / 24-70 f/2.8 L II Toughness?
« on: October 02, 2013, 05:10:14 PM »
I'm just wondering how much these lens can stand up to without damaging anything internally. Has anyone here had any mishaps?

I was on a power boat the other day and I was leaning over the side when a bounce caused my to slightly ding the bottom of the barrel against passenger side windshield. Everything seemed to work okay afterwards, but it got me thinking/worrying about possible damage or misalignment of elements.

Lenses / Tokina 16-28mm FX Focusing Issue with 5D3
« on: March 21, 2013, 12:11:17 AM »
I have had this lens for about a month and have been enjoying it. However, tonight I noticed when I went outside to take some shots that it didn't seem to be locking focus on the left hand side. Even if I placed an objected toward the left side of where I was aiming, making sure that the object was closer to the lens than anything on the right side of the view finder, it still seemed reluctant to grab focus toward the left.

I put my 5D3 in a different focusing mode, eight-point selection to the far left, and it managed to lock on okay then. However, once in awhile the camera would seem to do a "freeze lock" and even if I took my finger off the shutter, I could immediately press down again and take a picture without the lens regaining focus.

I tried to replicate this issue on my 5D2, but I can't seem to reproduce it. Everything seems to work normally.

When compared to my 24-105L on my 5D3, aiming directly at the edge of a table, the 24-105 picks up the table in a completely perfect focused line in the view finder. The Tokina 16-28 only picks up the right side of the edge of the table. Again, this doesn't seem to be an issue with the 5D2; the lens worked fine.

I have used FoCal to calibrate the lens on both the 5D2 and 5D3. My adjustments with the 5D3 were -11 for the wide end, and +3 for the telephoto end.

Do you guys think this is a calibration issue, or do you think I should return this copy of the lens and see if I can get another?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Camera body lens mount removal
« on: February 21, 2013, 10:58:51 PM »
Does anyone know how to take the lens mount off a 5D2?

I have the four screws out, but the mount won't lift off. I'm assuming there might be a slight lip to the mount that's preventing its removal.

Lenses / Tokina AT-X 16-28mm F2.8 vs. Canon EF 17-40mm F4
« on: February 01, 2013, 12:59:11 PM »
I'm thinking about purchasing either one of these lenses. I have read reviews on both, and both have their advantages and disadvantages. I also did a search on this forum for information, but I am just seeing if anything has changed regarding the Tokina and if more people are using it now.

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations with purchasing either one of these lenses?

I just installed magic lantern on my 5DII tonight (which is awesome, BTW) and I'm now wanting to use Reikan's Focal lens adjustment software.

My concerns are:

- Now that I have magic lantern installed, will it affect the operation of the Reikan Focal software?

- If I decide to remove Magic Lantern down the road and I have to reset my camera, will all my lens micro adjustments be gone until I reuse the software to get them back?

Thanks for everyone's time.

I disassembled my 5DII to get some dust out from behind the focusing screen and the superimposed indicating plate by the prism. There are two metal shims between the focusing screen and the SI indicating plate - one a gold colour and the other silver.

When I took it a part I swore the gold shim came out first and was closest to the focusing screen, and the silver spring second and closest to the SI plate.

Now I am not too sure...

My questions are:

1) Does anyone know the correct order of them?, and

2) Does the order even matter as long as they are both there?

Hi Everyone,

I've been a lurker for some time here on Canon Rumors and I've finally decided to join and contribute to the forum. Here's some pictures I took with my 7D earlier this month of my beautiful city, Calgary.
