Software & Accessories / Step up or down rings?
« on: October 11, 2014, 02:29:20 PM »
I am going to be buying a polarising filter before I go to Iceland in a few weeks. Is it better to get the bigger filter, 82mm for my Tamron 24-70mm and use the step down rings for my Canon 17-40mm or the 77mm filter for the Canon and use the step up rings for the Tamron.
Which do you think is the best way?

Lenses / Is my Tamron 24-70 as sharp?
« on: June 21, 2014, 09:25:16 AM »
A few days ago I received the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8, a very nice lens! Soon after using it I noticed the photos where not sharp at 24mm at f/2.8, so I decided to try the DotTune method; well this did not work for me. Instead I printed of a focus test chart and practiced taking photos of that. As you will see at 24mm at f/2.8 the focus is terrible, then after a lot of playing around I changed the AFMA to +14 which you can see is a lot better. I was wondering what peoples thoughts are on this, is +14 acceptable or should I send it back and get another copy? Because of this I’m now worried that this copy of the lens is not as sharp as it should be, but then I don’t know how sharp it should be, if that makes sense.

Lenses / Sigma 35mm f/1.4
« on: February 06, 2014, 06:54:36 AM »
Hello again everyone.

After a lot of consideration, I am looking at primes for a number of reasons, and after looking through my photos I see I shoot a lot around 35mm, I like this focal length. I am very tempted by the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 lens.
I was wondering what peoples experiences are of using this lens and what do you use this lens for. For example, does this lens stay on your camera a lot and is it used as a walk around lens?

Lenses / Lens filters or not?

Lens filters

Sometime soon I am going to be buying the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8, with that I was going to by a UV Filter for it, just like I have on my 2 L lenses. Do UV filters have an impact on the sharpness of pictures; if so is it better to avoid filters?

Lenses / Your lenses for weddings?

For those of you who shoot weddings, I was wondering what lenses you use any why?

Lenses / Canon 135mm or Tamron 24-70mm
« on: January 14, 2014, 07:15:52 AM »
I don’t want another f/4 lens; I want something faster like an f/2.8 or f/2. Yes I shoot some weddings and the last one I shot I used both my Canon 17-40mm f/4 and my Canon 70-200mm f/4, both good lenses but both are f/4 also the 17-40 is a wide angle lens.

If I had the money I would love to buy the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 II lens, but I also noticed in a previous topic someone mentioned the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 and from my research yes overall the Canon is a better, only just, than the Tamron, but not £1000 better! I am very impressed with what I am reading about Tamron. In terms of quality and performance I am reading that the Tamron fits in between the Canon 24-70 MK1 and the 24-70 MK2.

So I think you get the idea I would like a general purpose lens which is good in low light, f/2.8 is not bad, and one which is more suited to weddings than my 17-40mm. I have read a lot of reviews comparing the Tamron 24-70 to Canon’s and as I have said, the Canon is better than the Tamron but only just and I am very close to buying the Tamron. My dilemma is I love the look of the Canon 135mm f/2, the price is not that much different to the Tamron 24-70. So both are very good lenses but I am not sure which one is best for me right now. I am leaning towards a 24-70mm as it would sit in nicely between my 17-40 and my 70-200, also the fact it is more versatile than the 135mm.

I would appreciate your views on this, thanks!

Software & Accessories / My Dell vs iMac
« on: December 09, 2013, 06:28:45 AM »
I currently own a Dell Inspiron 580 i5 760 2.80GHz, 6GB RAM, I mainly use Lightroom but also use Photoshop and both run well. I want a new monitor but then I thought what’s the point when I would like to get an iMac. This would cost around £1920, £1,599 for the basic 27” adding another £320 with 16GB Ram and 1TB Fusion Drive. I want to future proof the iMac so I don’t regret not adding say more RAM.

My question is, how much of a difference would there be between my current dell and the iMac? I know adding an extra 10GB will speed things up but its things like my i5 2.80GHz to an i5 3.2GHz, how big a difference is that? Should I go for the i7 and not the i5?
I don’t play games on my PC, have a PS4 for that, and I don’t edit videos either, so the most demanding thing will be the editing of RAW files.

Thanks  :)

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Viewfinder display
« on: September 13, 2013, 05:26:26 PM »
The information displayed in the viewfinder like the shutter speed and aperture is cut off at the bottom, for example, the battery level is showing as if the battery is flat but I know the battery is full. Or the bottom of say the number 0 just shows three sides.

Any idea what is happening here?

Software & Accessories / PC Monitor for photo editing
« on: July 21, 2013, 04:32:43 AM »
Can anyone recommend a good PC monitor for photo editing. I currently have a Samsung Syncmaster 2333sw but I would like to buy a better quality monitor for photo editing and I’ll set it up alongside my 2333sw. My budget is £500 but the lower the price the better although I realize quality does not come cheap.

Thanks :)

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5D Mark II composition movement
« on: July 18, 2013, 07:02:16 AM »
I have recently brought a Canon EOS 5D Mark II second hand. A few weeks ago I shot a wedding and noticed some of my shots where not composed well, first I thought this was me not paying attention but after the wedding I noticed that even though I didn’t recompose my shots, something in the camera is moving and altering what I see through the view finder, this happens more often when shooting portrait rather than landscape. Any idea why this is happening? Is there something in my camera which needs to be fixed?

Technical Support / RAW photos in Lightroom darken
« on: June 23, 2013, 04:29:53 PM »
I have been meaning to ask this question for a while now: I shoot RAW + Jpeg and import my photos into Lightroom 3.5. When I click on each image it darkens quite a bit, there are no presets applied so I was wondering if someone could explain to me why this is happening? Is this something to do with the RAW files?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Insurance
« on: June 10, 2013, 06:29:50 AM »
I have just brought a used Canon EOS 5D MK II, I also have a few L lenses and other expensive equipment. I have a wedding coming up very soon and I was wondering if anyone could recommend anyone who I could get insurance with for the usual Professional indemnity, Public Liability and equipment insurance?

Thanks  :)

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5Dc a good option?
« on: March 24, 2013, 12:57:06 PM »
I currently have a Canon 450D and I have been looking at going full frame by buying a used 5D Mark ii in time for a wedding in June, but as I have a low budget of around £900, I was wondering if I might be better off with a 5Dc for around £400.

I know my 450D is a newer camera with a DIGIC III processor and the 5Dc has a DIGIC II processor, but would going back to an older processor matter? Other disadvantages of the 5dc is a small screen, no sensor cleaning and well I think it’s just those three things. With the 5Dc being full frame the ISO and image quality will be much better than the 450D, am I right?

Is there a big difference in image quality between the 5Dc and 5D MKII?

I do understand that the 5DMark ii is again better than the 5Dc, but I am trying to save money. I am basically asking is going from the 450D to a 5Dc a good option?

Thanks :)

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Cheapest way
« on: February 18, 2013, 07:25:20 AM »
I really want to go full frame by the end of June as I am the photographer for a wedding at the end of that month, but I am on a very tight budget. I would like to buy the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the 24-105mm lens; I live in the UK and would like to know the best way/places of getting this camera and lens at the cheapest price possible. Yes I understand this may mean not getting this equipment new.

Thanks very much!  :)

Lighting / Off camera flash
« on: January 13, 2013, 05:44:32 PM »
Hello. I have just brought the canon speedlite 430ex ii and I am wanting to get the flash off camera. I know there are many ways of doing this but many of them are expensive. So can someone recommend a way of doing this at a decent price?

I have come across these two options, could someone also explain what the main differences are between the two of them and if they are any good?

Thanks very much!  :)
