Lenses / Can someone recommend a teleconverter?
« on: November 22, 2012, 08:45:22 AM »
I'm looking at either the 1.4X III or the 2X III from Canon. I'll be using them on a 5DIII primarily with a 70-200 2.8 II. It's for the times I'm shooting wildlife, which isn't often, but I do have a trip coming up in December.

How mushy are pics with the 2X? Is the little extra reach on the 1.4 worth adding? Or am I just as well off to crop a sharp image?

Thanks in advance.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5D3 owners: What do you wish you knew?
« on: September 20, 2012, 09:06:31 AM »
My new body is "out for delivery." I've been reading the 404 page manual for the past few days, familiarizing myself with the settings and AF options. What do you wish you'd known the first day? Any customizations that you've found to make life easier? Here's your chance to impart your wisdom.

And not that anyone asked, but the 135L is going to be the first thing I slap on that puppy. :)

Lenses / 24L II or 24-70 II ??
« on: September 18, 2012, 09:26:08 PM »
I'm torn. I love my primes. I love low light and bokeh, but I also like having that one walk-around lens that does a little of everything. With a new 5DIII on the way, I'm losing the 15-85 EF-S lens. I have a 28mm 1.8, which will show its weaknesses on the 5DIII, I'm afraid. I have a 50mm, a 135L, and a 200L. No zoom lens.

I feel like pulling the trigger on the 24L II, but I worry I'll be swapping lenses all the time or never having what I need with me. Will I be okay with a "boring" 2.8 lens? Should I be thinking about the 24-70 II and 70-200 II combo?

I need help. I know there's no "right" solution and that it's all based on tastes, but I'm swayable. So sway me!

EOS Bodies / Should I buy a lens or sell the ones I own?

The gist of my question is this: How long before Canon releases a camera with the sensor technology it seems Sony and Nikon currently possess? The sample images I've seen so far from the 5DIII and D800 have me underwhelmed with Canon's offering, especially at the price. My initial thought was to sell my lenses (a few L primes, the 50 1.4 and 28 1.8) and move to Nikon. I want to go FF, but I want great low-light and superb focus. If I can't get both, I might as well go for the superior resolution of the D800. There doesn't seem to be anything in the 5DIII for me other than existing lenses and familiar UI.

The alternative would be to invest in glass and wait for Canon to start using Sony sensors. I could get a 70-200 2.8 IS II and the new 24-70 2.8 II for five grand or so and wait a few years for the 5DV, the 3D, or some other mystical unicorn.

I have no problem waiting a few years. I'm happy with my T2i and current glass, but I really want to add a FF at some point. Is there any reason to suspect Canon will go elsewhere for better sensor tech (and WB tech while they're at it?).

This is not a trolling post, btw. I've been eagerly awaiting the 5DIII for years and hovered over the pre-order button dozens of times. I have the money to spend. I'm just flabbergasted that they allowed the most important/anticipated product release in the companies' digital history to fall flat on its face like this. (My opinion of course and based on the handful of images released thus far).

Canon General / An article Canon should read.

Excellent article explaining why large companies are often "disrupted," why Apple hasn't succumbed to this, and why Canon SHOULD try to cannibalize its own products by innovating new ones. Anyone with Canon gear should read this. Very eye-opening.

EOS Bodies / Looking for a second body
« on: March 29, 2011, 09:47:14 PM »
So many choices! I don't know where to begin. I have a T2i that I'm loving, but I want a better AF system and more control. I don't do a lot of video, so I'm just looking for the best camera to go with my lenses:

28mm 1.8
50mm 1.4
100mm Macro L IS
135 2 L

I also have two EF-S lenses:

15-85mm (love this lens)
55-250mm

I'm torn between getting a 7D soon or waiting for a 5DIII.

Pros that I can think of with the 7D:

I can use all my lenses. Sounds like the best crop camera on the market, Canon or otherwise. Does pretty much everything I want (remote flash triggering, focus adjustment for my primes)

Pros for the 5DIII:

Full frame! Get the most out of my 100mm and 135mm.
All the new features and goodies it is bound to have.
Better low light.

Cons for each:

I'm worried the 5DIII will be a lot more than the 5DII is right now. ~$3,500? Maybe?

I'm also worried I'll buy a 7D, which is two years old, and the 7DII will come out next year. I don't mind my equipment getting long in the tooth, but it's nice to have it a year without kicking your own pants. (I know this sounds whiny and pathetic, but I have to take my psychology into account, here).

Please, convince me either way, I beg you!
