Software & Accessories / Settings for Reikan Focal
« on: September 11, 2014, 06:27:41 PM »
I am starting to adjust camera bodies with lenses

Wonder what settings in the preferences are recommended.  I tried high strict AF repeatability and found that was problematic.

Any recommendations?  After basic tests, what would be recommended next.  I got the pro software.

Lenses / When will we see a replacement for the 100-400?
« on: September 09, 2014, 09:15:55 PM »
There have been lots of talk of a 100-400 replacement and yet nothing has materialized.  When might we see this lens?

I have all but given up hope that it will be replaced.  After all, it is Canon's top selling lens and if they made it too good it would hurt 200-400F4 sales  :o

Lenses / Why are Cine Lenses so expensive?
« on: July 30, 2014, 12:28:51 AM »
Besides that they sell for the price, what does a Cine lens offer than a regular L lens does not?

Flip side - could a Cine lens be used as a still lens?  How sharp would it be?

Third Party Manufacturers / Anyone own both Canon and Nikon
« on: July 07, 2014, 12:49:45 AM »
In particular I am considering the new D810 with 14-24 and 24-70 for landscapes.

The Canon 16-35 F4 is good but the 14-24 is great!

The 5DM3 is a nice camera but lacks the DR of the D810.

Hate to spend the extra $ for another body and duplicate lenses.

Does anyone shoot both Canon and Nikon - Canon for long lens and Nikon for wide angles?  Experience?  Thoughts?

I am not trolling nor trying to start a flame war, but look for well thought out positions based upon experience.

Thanks

Rich

Lenses / How to Calculate DOF for a 180 Macro Lens (in macro mode)
« on: May 12, 2014, 10:57:40 PM »
I am interested in how to calculated DOF with a 180 macro lens so I can determine how much to move a focusing rail.  If the focal length was truly 180, then it would be simple.  But I have heard when a macro lens is focusing close, the focal length is actually much shorter than when the lens is focusing at infinity.

Canon General / Professional Business insurance
« on: April 23, 2014, 11:37:23 PM »
There have been several (at least, perhaps more) on equipment insurance.  What about business insurance (professional liability).  If someone get hurt by your equipment, etc. I don't want to be held personally responsible.

Any suggestions?  I am think of doing a bit of work, not full time, but never the less, what to make sure I am covered.

Software & Accessories / Looking for a focusing rail
« on: April 02, 2014, 12:39:08 PM »
With spring nearing, I am thinking that I would like to get use a focusing rail to help my macro work.  Ideally it would be great to have a motorized setup, but with the need for power (batteries) that would make the rig too large to take to the field.

Next best would be a stepping rail with some sort of gear knob to allow me to move the camera in fine increments.

Any experience/recommendations?

Thanks

Software & Accessories / any records to raw to both cards?
« on: March 12, 2014, 04:36:33 PM »
Hi

Does anyone record raw to both cards simultaneously?  This would give a bit of extra security in case a card failed, but seems like over kill since I have yet to have a card die in the field.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / HELP - strange 1Dx AEB behaviour
« on: February 16, 2014, 12:32:35 AM »
Or at least I think it is strange

I set my 1Dx to AEB (firmware v2.0.3) in manual exposure mode.

According to the manual, the camera should adjust the shutter speed.  What I observed is that the camera adjusts whatever is on the main dial.  When I have the aperture control on the main dial, it is adjusted.  When I have the shutter speed on the main dial, it is adjusted.

Is something wrong with my camera/firmware or is the quirk in the firmware?

Thanks

Hi

I am considering buying a high MP body for landscapes.  Right now Canon does not a high MP body (5DM3 is 22 MP), not quite high MP.

As i see it, there are 2 high MP 35mm bodies - Nikon D800 and Sony alpha A7R.  I think both use the same sensory though there is a difference in cost - the nikon is 3300 vs 2300 for the Sony.

I think it will be easier to attach a canon lens (such as the 17mm T/S) to the Alpha as well as attach the Nikon 14-24 to the Alpha (is this true) than the Canon 17mm T/S to the Nikon.  Is this true?

Other lens to consider?  With the Nikon 14-24 is there any reason to use the Canon 14mm?

Other thoughts are welcome.

Thanks

Lighting / Technical specs for Canon 600 flash
« on: January 21, 2014, 11:29:00 AM »
Looking to understand how my flash works.  Like how does high speed synch work in detail- for example, what is the number of times it flashes at different shutter speeds, why does it go into high speed synch at 1/250 in Av mode but not M mode.

Lighting / Reco for on flash diffuser
« on: January 21, 2014, 11:26:18 AM »
Looking to buys diffuser for my 600-ex flash. I have looked at the lumiquest and honl and there seems to be a lot of to choose from. Like most products, reviews are mixed with some people pointing out the diffusers slip and other to mentioning a problem.

Software & Accessories / Reco for on flash "soft box" that travels well
« on: January 19, 2014, 09:52:01 PM »
I am looking for a soft box attachment for the Canon 600-series flash.  I need this device to (1) travel well and (2)  e stable on the camera.  Ideally I would not like to attach velcro glue strips to the flash but realize that these may be the best way to secure the soft box attachment.

Thanks in advance for all the (great) ideas.
