Lenses / Error 01 for canon 28mm f/1.8
« on: April 19, 2014, 11:28:33 PM »
I'm getting an Error 01 on my 28mm f/1.8. Has anyone else experience this?

After some detective work I think the aperture contact is faulty. Any guess on how much the mothership will charge to fix this?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / upgrading from a 7D to a 70D
« on: March 02, 2014, 07:05:32 PM »
Does anyone consider the 7D to 70D an actual upgrade. The 70D is newer, has better ISO performance, it has a flip out LCD as well as the whole live view AF thing. It has the exact same AF system and a very similar frame rate. Has anyone made the "jump" to the newer body?

I'm a 7D shooter here and I'm considering making the switch, basically, is the 70D 200$ better than the 7D?

Lenses / Filters
« on: December 19, 2013, 10:51:18 PM »
I need no convincing I need a filter, they've saved me in instances of a drop, however do I really need to pay the premium for the B+W Filters? Has anyone had a positive experience with a less expensive filter? 53$ for a 58mm filter just seems a bit steep.

Lenses / Canon 10-22 vs. Tokina 11-16
« on: November 25, 2013, 06:06:24 PM »
I'm looking to purchase an UWA lens for my 7d. I'm pretty torn between the Canon 10-22, the Tokina 11-16.

The 10-22 is obviously wider, I also read that it puts out a little better IQ. Also the canon USM is probably a bit snappier. However, does anyone who shoots this lens find the variable aperture causing problems in everyday shooting? My fear is that i'll be shooting on the fly and get screwed over shooting at f/4.5. Obviously at that focal length DOF isn't really a concern but quick shutter speeds are important to me as a photojournalist.

11-16 is great because of the f/2.8 but i'm afraid the zoom range is too limited. Does anyone who shoots this lens find that range presents issues? My fear is that it is more of a specialty lens and I wont feel comfortable leaving it on the camera for long periods of time, while the range of 10-22 gives me a lot more options. Also I've been less than in love with the AF performance of non-canon lenses.

Lenses / Broken 70-200mm f/2.8
« on: November 17, 2013, 10:01:45 PM »
So I more or less, inherited a canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS (mark i), the glass is super sharp however before i got it, the lens was dropped from a tree. Because of this, the internal USM focusing motor is loose on the inside of the barrel. This causes a lot of shots to go out of focus, (duh) but all I have to do is tip the front element up towards the sky and the USM will fall back into place and I can keep shooting. The opposite is also true, if i point the lens towards the ground the USM will fall out of place and the lens wont focus on anything. Also due to the loose elements, a lot shots just end up soft from time to time.

First question, has anyone experienced a similar phenomena with this lens or any other for that matter?

Next, I'm ready to get the lens repaired, I have no experience shipping things off to canon. Does anyone have any idea how much a repair like this would cost? Also, what's the next step in contacting canon and shipping the lens back to the mothership?

Third Party Manufacturers / Tokina 50-135mm f/2.8 DX
« on: April 16, 2013, 02:25:31 AM »
Has anyone shot on the Tokina 50-135? I'm looking for a telephoto zoom for my 7D but I find that the lovely 70-200mm L is too tight on the crop sensor. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this lens and could comment on it's sharpness and AF performance. I hear a lot of positive reviews of Tokina's 11-16. I'm hoping this lens is similar. Thanks.

Lenses / 70-200 f/4 vs. 200 f/2.8
« on: October 03, 2012, 05:45:22 PM »
I have about 800 $ to spend on a longer lens. Currently my longest lens is the 85 f/1.8. I shoot Division 1 college  athletics (football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, hockey). My 85 is great and the AF on my 7d is really treating me well i just need something longer for football and soccer. My two options are the 200 f/2.8 prime or the 70-200 f/4 zoom. What do you think?

Lenses / 20mm f/2.8 vs. 28mm f/1.8
« on: July 16, 2012, 09:40:24 PM »
I'm having a hard time deciding between these two wide angle primes. I have a 7d and i'm going to acquire a 5d mark ii soon. I feel as if we can debate wider/slower versus tighter/faster. They're also about the same price. But my question is regarding optical quality. Would anyone know if one of these lenses is significantly better in terms of sharpness, CA, and the sort? If it's a tie, I think i'll pick the 20mm f/2.8

Lenses / 50mm f/1.8 vs. 50mm f/1.4
« on: July 16, 2012, 09:36:26 PM »
I currently have a 50mm f/1.8 and I'm really struggling with the AF. It's awful. I don't know if mine is screwed up after a week of shooting in the desert or if it's just screwy but i end up manually focusing at f/1.8 frequently which is a bit of an adventure especially with the microscopic focus ring on the 1.8. My question is the boost in AF performance worth the 200 or so bucks in the upgrade to the 1.4 USM? I'm a college student so the 1.2L is out of the question in terms of cost.
