Technical Support / Flash at more than ISO 400 with the 1Dx Help Please
« on: November 21, 2013, 04:15:05 PM »
Can anyone help please, I'm missing something obvious and can't find how to use flash at more than ISO 400 with my 1Dx.

I know its possible and have a work round, but I don't know why its working. I've read the manual and know I must be missing something Blimming Obviouse.  :-[ Be gentle with me.  :-[

I don't use flash often as I'm mainly a wildlife photographer but some times I need a bit of extra light. Today I was photographing Kingfishers. When the sun set I was using ISO12800. It was nice to get the sunset reflected in its eye. But I would have liked to have been able to use a bit of fill in flash. I was using a 300 f2.8 with 2x converter. So I'm out of zoom on the flash, a canon 580, by a long way.

If I just slap the flash on top of the camera, it defaults to ISO400. And I can't alter it. Of course it works fine, but I can't use it as fill flash.

If I use my custom settings (C1, C2 or C3) I can use any ISO.

Clearly its a case of incompetence on my part, but could someone point out what settings I'm getting wrong.

These are what I'm getting. A bird at ISO12800, a stick at ISO400 and a stick at ISO4000.

EOS Bodies / Crop sensors need cropped lenes
« on: August 09, 2013, 05:44:44 PM »
I used to have a 7D. A camera I took many pictures with and really enjoyed. But I was using it mainly behind L series lenses because I wanted the quality that those lenses provide. This has proved to be a good investment as I now have a 5D3 and a 1Dx and the lenses work with them.

I don't want more megapixels, I've got more than I uses almost always. And before anyone suggests it I certainly don't want more just so I can crop them away.  :P

One of my main problems with all this kit is the weight, carrying 40Kg on a trek to a wild life photo opertunity can be a pain.

When the 7D2 comes out the thing that would get me to buy one would be if light weight lens were available with similar quality to the L series but making use of the reduced diameter needed for the smaller sensor. (While they are at it they can reduce the price as the elements aren't as big.  ;) )

I know its not going to happen but it would be nice if it did. ------- Just think a nice quality 200-400 with built in 1.4x at about 1/2 the weight and cost in front of a crop sensor giving equivalent view to a 300 to 900 on a FF.  8)

( BTW There can be little doubt that someone who thinks they know better will ridicule this idea. If they convince me that they are right I will claim I was being sarcastic  ;D )

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Conversion to Nikon
« on: November 14, 2012, 09:33:39 AM »
I'm not much impressed by all the doom and gloom some people talk about Canon on this site. My view is if they really think what they say on here they would be best going out and using what ever it is they think is so fantastic. It would be a lot less stresfull for them.

Having said that I will soon be a Nikon user. My 1Dx is such a great camera it has taken a picture that won me first prize in a national competition, well its in a national paper anyway  :), and the first prize is a Nikon.

Well I'll be happily getting the best I can out of that camera now, accepting it for what it is and enjoying my hobby.
