So my 5D MkIII has been revealing stuck/dead/hot pixels in my images... Thought I could re-map it myself and called CPS to advise me on the best method.

Interestingly and unexpectedly, they told me to send it in for regular maintenance and that they would fix it!  They said that I can't fix it myself.

I mentioned that I had thought I re-mapped a Rebel sometime ago for a friend and he said that I likely did but it cannot be done by me on the 5D3?

Anyway, into CPS it goes for CMS... Hopefully that's free since I'm still under warranty!

Just wondering if anyone else has heard that we can't fix the pixel issue on a 5D too?  Did you have to send it in as well?

I'll be shipping my EF 100-400mm f/4.0-5.6L IS USM off for repair work this week.  It's not been under warranty for several years now.

When I hit my AF (rear button focus), I can see the center point being pulled down as I look thru the viewfinder, it seems to click and keeps trying to capture focus but fails.  Then I'll push the front shutter button half way for metering or sometimes just click it and take an image and try to focus again and then it will catch again and focus.  When it does focus, it's spot on.  Trouble is, it is only focusing about 1 in 5 images now...

Additionally, I can see part of the inside of the barrel moving when I look in it from the 77mm end.  It will sway back and forth, whatever direction I move the barrel!

So it's going in, I can't stand it but I need it fixed.  Is it wise to join CPS before I send it in or not?  If so, what level does anyone recommend joining at?

All the best,
Ken :(

Animal Kingdom / Help with Bird ID?
« on: April 16, 2013, 11:48:45 AM »
Hi, hoping someone can assist with positive id for this bird.  My best guess is that it is either a Western Kingbird or a Cassin's Kingbird.  They appear to be very similar to me and I'm not sure I can properly Id the bird.

The Cassin's Kingbird is rare here in Central Florida, they've been seen nonetheless.  A Western Kingbird sighting is apparently somewhat rare here as well, they are known to migrate a bit south of where I'm at from my understanding.

There are wingbars as can be seen, yet I'm told one of the more telling differences is the white chin and malar contrasting with the darker head and breast.  I don't see that it this one at all.  They are very similar and I'm really just not sure, hopefully someone from the midwestern states can Id it more positively for me!

Thanks all,
Ken :o

Lenses / Moving on from my 7D to 5D MK III 24-70mm, 24-105mm or prime
« on: December 30, 2012, 01:14:28 AM »
Okay, I"m thrilled to have finally received my 5D MK III!  Coming from my 7D I have some of the longer focal lengths covered, 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II and the legendary 100-400mm L.  Most of my wider lenses are EF-s Lenses like my wonderful EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8...

I need some wider glass for my 5D III any suggestions?  I'm looking at 24-70 f/2.8, 24-105 f/4, or maybe primes like a 24mm or 35mm or 50mm f/1.4... any thoughts??   EF 85mm 1.8 is on my short list, but it's not really wide...
