Hi Everyone,

My sister is looking to hire a wedding photographer to do both still photos and video for her wedding coming up this January in St. Paul, MN.

Can you please give me some advice on what questions my sister should ask wedding photographers when considering who she should hire?  Also, is there anyone in the St. Paul/Minneapolis metro area that she should consider who does good work at a reasonable price?  She has about a $2,000 budget, and she is looking to hire someone for 5-6 hours of work.

Software & Accessories / Neutral Density filter for 24-70L MKII???
« on: June 30, 2014, 11:26:50 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I wold like some advice on purchasing my first ND filter.  I have never used a ND filter before, and I was thinking about starting off with a 0.6 filter, like this one:

I also noticed these variable ND filters, which would be very flexible, but I believe there could be drawbacks to image quality:

Please let me know which filter you think I should purchase.

Lenses / Build quality of Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM?
« on: June 28, 2014, 07:11:03 PM »

I just purchased a Canon 70D kit with the ef-s 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens for my sister, and I noticed the front part of the lens has a tiny bit of play, both when the lens is retracted and extended.  When I say a tiny bit of play, it is tiny, but it is still noticeable.  I'm comparing the 18-135 lens to my Canon L zoom lenses, and my L lenses don't have any play at all, so that is why I'm wondering if this 18-135mm lens is defective.

Is this tiny bit of play normal for this lens, or should I exchange the lens?  I took about 75 photos with the camera and I don't see any issues with the photos.

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to purchase a point & shoot waterproof/tough camera for my sister, and I would like to hear your recommendations.  Here are things to consider:

* My sister knows next to nothing about photography, so the camera needs to take good JPEG photos, and video, in auto mode.
* The camera needs to have easy to use wifi connectivity, so my sister can easily download photos to her iPad/iPhone, and share the photos on Facebook.

Right now I'm leaning toward the new Olympus camera, but I'd like to know if there is a better camera available.

Technical Support / 5D MKIII autofocus points display?
« on: March 23, 2014, 03:08:56 PM »
Since the autofocus points are displayed in black in the view finder, I'm having a difficult time seeing the focus points in some situations.

I'd like to have the autofocus points displayed in red in the view finder when I press down half way on the shutter button.  Is there a way to set-up the camera to do this?

Lenses / Canon EF 100 f/2.8L IS Macro autofocus?
« on: December 26, 2013, 02:25:20 PM »
Good Afternoon,

Santa gave me the Canon EF 100 f/2.8L IS Macro for Christmas, and this is my first experience with a macro lens.  I took about 100 photos indoors yesterday, and about every 10th photo the autofocus hunts for 5-10 seconds before it acquires focus.  The indoor lighting is adequate, but I would not say the lighting is bright.  I've been taking a mixture of portrait and macro type photos.

Most of the photos I've taken appear to be in focus, but I'm still learning the lens.  Is it normal for this lens to hunt at times to lock focus, or do I potentially have a bad copy?

Here are my settings with my 5D MKIII

* lens is on FULL mode
* camera is set to Case 1 with AI SERVO
* selectable AF point is 61 points
* manual select: spot AF
* The camera is on manual mode with auto ISO, and I've been taking photos with apertures between f/2.8 and f/8 with shutter speeds between 1/60 - 1/200.

Also, I'd appreciate any advice on recommended aperture and shutter speed settings with this lens for both portrait and marco photos.

Third Party Manufacturers / Sony RX100 MKII accessories?
« on: December 15, 2013, 03:25:47 PM »
I'm planning on purchasing the Sony RX100 MK II, and I'm looking for some advice on a LCD screen protector and lens filter.

I'd like to purchase a LCD screen protector, and I'm considering the Giottos SP83015 LCD screen protector, which is supposed to fit the RX100, but the reviews on the B&H website state that the SP83015 does not fit the LCD screen exactly.  Is there a different Giottos model number that will fit the RX100 MK II about the SP8306?

Also, does anyone have a recommendation for a lens filter for the RX100 MK II, or should I go without one?

Portrait / Looking for advice on my portraits...
« on: December 01, 2013, 05:16:02 PM »

Please see attached photos...what settings should I be using on my 5D MKIII (70-200mm f/2.8 IS II L) so I get everyone's face in tack sharp focus when there are multiple people in the photo?

P.S. I'm relatively new to photography, and I have a lot to learn, so any feedback/input would be greatly appreciated!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Materials used in EOS Camera Bodies?
« on: November 17, 2013, 02:24:33 PM »
Two questions regarding materials used in EOS camera bodies:

Corning has developed Gorilla Glass 3 for computer and smart phone LCDs, and the glass is super tough, and is basically scratch proof.

Why doesn't Canon use Gorilla Glass for the camera body LCDs, so we don't have to worry about the LCD being scratched or damaged?

My second question, is there a lighter composite material that camera bodies (and lenses) could be made from, that is just as strong as titanium, which would help reduce the weight of camera bodies and lenses?

Third Party Manufacturers / Nikon 14-24 or 16-35 for Nikon D600?
« on: May 18, 2013, 01:51:21 PM »
I'm looking for some input on which lens to purchase....please let me know what you think, and please keep in mind I'm just an amateur photographer.

I just ordered a Nikon D600 as a second camera to my 5D Mark III, and I'm considering purchasing either the Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 or the 16-35 f/4.

I already own the Canon 17-40 f/4 to use with my 5d Mark III, so I'm leaning toward the Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 to use with the D600.

My primary uses for the Nikon 14-24, or the Nikon 16-35, would be:
*, baseball stadiums, and hockey arenas
* cityscapes/landscapes....I'm planning on taking a trip to Mount Rushmore this summer
* astrophotography
* architecture

P.S. Attached are a few photos I took with the 5D mk3 and 17-40 f/4

I currently have the Canon S100, but I am contemplating purchasing the Sony RX100 for a better quality pocketable camera.

There are two things holding me back from making the purchase:

* The RX100 focus range is 28-100mm, and I'd prefer 24mm on the lower end.
* Canon, or a competitor, will release a better pocketable camera in 2013.

How likely is it that Canon will release a Powershot S120 with a 1" sensor, or another competitor, in 2013?

I'm thinking about purchasing the Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC as a walk around lens for my 5D Mark III.

Does anyone have this lens and can you tell me how the image quality compares to the Canon 24-105L on the 5D Mk III?

Software & Accessories / Recommended case for Canon G1X???
« on: December 26, 2012, 02:06:47 PM »
For those of you who own the G1X, what do you recommend for a small camera case for the G1X with the 58mm Filter Adapter attached?

Right now, I'm leaning toward the Lowepro Edit 100.
