Lenses / Infra red filter - question
« on: May 17, 2013, 07:14:15 PM »

I saw some nice infra red photos and I wondered are there two types of filters?
Namely, I thought that UV/IR filter is used to cut of those rays. So what filter should one use for IR photography? Are these different filters or I missed something?

Lenses / Blue cast in shadows
« on: March 04, 2013, 08:09:53 PM »

I've noticed that something that supposed to be white actually has bluish cast in shadow.
For example I took a photo of a tree with white flowers and the flowers lit by sun look white. WB looks fine, however those flowers of a tree which ended up in a shade look somehow blue.
I would expect them to look more pale white, or something towards beige.

Is this a normal thing?

My explanation is that the shade has different temperature and that's why it is off.
How do you guys solve this issue if it happens to occur?

Pricewatch Deals / What is the best place to sell your equipment?
« on: January 23, 2013, 02:38:54 PM »

I don't have any experience is selling the equipment online at all.
I'm a legal citizen in the US, but I don't have an account in the American bank. Are there other options available?
Would it be the easiest option to open an account here?

Third Party Manufacturers / Leica M 240 vs 5D III vs Nikon D800
« on: January 22, 2013, 11:19:50 PM »
After shooting and being obsessed with photography for two years I somehow settled with a 35mm f/1.4 on my dslr. It's 90% time on my camera for last few months.
Now as M 240 is about to be released I started to wonder should I sell all my equipment and settle with Leica and 35mm 1.4 lux. I like the idea of having EVF on it as composing through viewfinder is a bit tricky I heard.
Maybe in future I'd get some other lens as well, but for now 35mm is what gives me joy and I'm certain this would be enough for me. The size and weight are also a big plus for me to go in that direction.

Could owners of both systems share some thought about IQ, sharpness, colors... comparing Leica (I presume IQ of M240 will be very similar if not better than M9) and one of the mentioned DSLRs?

What are your predictions about other brands?
Will they go in that direction too?
I read Zeiss lenses are quality wise quite close to Leica and maybe there will be some other FF rangefinder style cameras for much less money.

Lenses / 24mm 35mm 70mm FoV
« on: January 20, 2013, 06:30:34 PM »
I own 35L and I love it. Recently I've started thinking about getting a 24-70 zoom , but I'm not sure it will give me results as my precious ;-)
If I wanted to simulate 24mm or 70mm with 35L (excluding possible compression or distortion @ 70 and 24mm respectively) how much should I step back or forward to get mentioned 24 and 70 mm focal lenghts' FoV?

EOS-M / Micro four DoF and lenses
« on: January 19, 2013, 05:54:15 PM »
I am really attracted by 4/3 system as it is small. I believe in few years the cameras will come with great sensors and IQ that will be good for my needs. Per Dxo olympus om has a slighty better dynamic range than 5d iii at the moment.
What do you think about a future of the lenses.
Why there's no lenses like 85mm f/1.2. The eqvivalent on 4/3 would be 42.5mm f/0.6, right?

Software & Accessories / Tripod, legs and ballhead grease - cleaning
« on: January 15, 2013, 05:20:03 PM »
Could someone recommend which grease should apply to tripod legs (lockers) once I clean them, rinse with water and dry them out? Can it be any grease or there is some that...?
Preferably some in Home Depot, Walmart etc so I could go and buy it now :-)

Do you clean ball heads as well? Mine seems to be fine for now, but eventually I guess I'll have to do that too. Is it complicated, should I give this part to some professional? The head is RRS BH-55.

...I found it that Phil Wood's Tenacious oil should be the best choice.

Software & Accessories / Wacom Intous 5 small
« on: December 21, 2012, 08:55:53 PM »

I've just received a new toy. First, I must say even though it is small it is big enough for me.
I even decreased the working area on it. And using pen after mouse is such a relief.

The other thing is how to configure it.
Can you more experianced guys share your settings for Lightroom and Photoshop, please?

Software & Accessories / TVC-24L similar
« on: November 26, 2012, 04:34:06 PM »

Are there any legs that are similar to those from RRS? $1000 seems to be too much for me at the moment.
I checked 3 Legged and similar, but they are all too short at the base.
The advantage of RRS is a tall person doesn't need a centre column.

Lighting / Elinchrom Ranger Quadra
« on: November 06, 2012, 02:01:56 PM »

I plan on buying the set. Is anybody using these strobes?
Is the difference between A and S only in shutter speed or there is something else hidden behind A and S?

What softboxes would you recommend for it? I plan on buying one octa, one square.
Would you go with Elichrom softboxes or there are some 3rd party that are good enough and cheaper?

Software & Accessories / Lightroom workflow vs in camera setting
« on: October 24, 2012, 06:52:25 PM »

I've been reading about great noise reduction that nowdays cameras have, lens correction etc.
So when I shoot raw non of these is applied to my photos, right?

What is your workflow with Lightrom in regard to importing photos?
Do you activate lens correction for every photo you import?
Can this be done during the import process itself, I couldn find that option in Import dialog?
I know one can do it afterwards by synchronizing all photos in folder, but what if the photos are not from the same lens.
What are the other little tweak you do before you start working on photo in Lightroom or later on in Photoshop?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5D III - battery problem
« on: October 19, 2012, 11:01:25 PM »
Yesterday I received 5d III. I got an extra battery too, Canon genuine (I ordered everything from B&H so no doubt in that).

This morning, as my first battery was about to get empty, I had swaped it with the other one and got cannot communicate error. I chose cancel and put the one that was at some 15% before back in.
For some reason I got the same error for that battery as well.
Now it seems that I have an issue with both batteries.

What should I do? I mean, it is a $3000 camera and the second day I used it...
Is this a firmware problem? The camera came with 1.1.3 Is there a way to reload it?

I cannot belive that once I finally got the camera I have to send it back.  :o
Should I ask for a new one?

Is this acctually a battery or a camera problem?

Software & Accessories / HorusBennu carbon fiber tripods
« on: October 15, 2012, 06:19:05 PM »

I've noticed nobody here discussed this brand. There's a topic on other forum

It might be interesting for someone, someone like me as well.
I considerd on buying FX 8442TT and FX 34QL. I'm 6.3. Do you thing this will be too short for me?
C-3540V is sizewise better, but it might be overkill and I guess I'll be needing a bigger ball head for it.

They seam quite affordable, esspecially after I saw RRS prices.
I found there was only one remark on LX-3 ballhead's clamp up to now everybody else seems to love it.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5d III CF and SD card
« on: October 12, 2012, 04:06:52 PM »

I've been trying to comprehence the data and test results, but cannot put it in the real life perspective.
If I used a SD card only what would that mean?
How many photos could I take before the camera would stop taking other photos?
How many would be the case with CF 600x card?

As CF cards are quite expencive would it be a better idea just to buy one 8GB 600x CF card and one 32GB SD and than just copy raw files from CF to SD from time to time?

I don't take video, but I wondered if I used 32GB UHC card (that 5dIII doesn't support) what would that mean, would it work all right?
