EOS Bodies - For Stills / should I buy a 7D now for Cad $690
« on: May 16, 2014, 11:02:22 AM »
A friend offered to sell me her 7D (3yrs old) with around 6K clicks on it. The camera looks like new with all the original accessories. The owner allows my to test it thoroughly before I make up my mind.
7D was once one of my dream cameras but now a lot of newer models seem to have better features.
I have saved up enough money to buy it to replace my very old but still very capable 40D but not sure if I should go for it.
Is the price reasonable ? Is it a good replacement to my 40D ? ( I may be able to sell my 40D for $180 to $200 so the actual replacement cost will be $500)

Any input will be appreciate.

Lenses / Scratched the rear element of a Canon 24-70 F2.8 I
« on: August 12, 2013, 09:16:17 PM »
I borrowed this lens and took it out for shooting last weekend. The rear lens cap was not tightly screwed on causing the rear element badly scratched with visible coating damage. I have heard that a rear element scratch is detrimental.

I put it on my 40D and took some pics. The scratches did not seem to have any adverse effects.

What are the settings (aperture and focal length) you wonderful people here would suggest for a full test to diagnose the possible problem ?

I understand that it would cost a lot to get the element replaced or to get it repair. I might have to buy it.

Anyway, please advise me and suggest what I can do about it.

Price seems ridiculously low - reduced from 1.1K to 1K on the second day for a 2 months' old 6D. Then.......paypal ??..........shipping from remote area??........shutter count 2844 ??..........excellent condition.... everything seems too good to be true.

My friend told me about it and sent me a screen capture of this offer. The listing was then gone - really sold ?? Or is it just a Scam ?

What do you think ?

edited - captured Craigslist listing removed. It may be inappropriate to post it here, I think.

Edit # 2  It's Kijiji not Craigslist. Sorry. Subject has to be edited as well.

The FF Sony RX-1 and RX1R is out now. Will Canon have one like this soon ??

(as an alternative to the expensive modern lenses)

Taken with a $15 Sigma 28mm 2.8 mini wide attached to a 600D with a OM to eos adapter ring with focus confirmation chip.
The venue is not really well- lit. camera set to aperture priority and lens f2.8 (maximum aperture)
Mild sharpening adjustment in Photoshop.

Please post your images taken with all brands of vintage manual lenses on a Canon(modified) body.

Third Party Manufacturers / Canon EOS 7D or Nikon D7100
« on: February 22, 2013, 06:14:09 AM »
I am planning to upgrade my Canon 40D to a more advanced camera. 40D isn't bad at all but it doesn't come with video shooting features at all. I can save up to around $1K or a little bit more in a few months' time.
A friend of mine from Asia said that she could buy me a new 7D (grey market) for US$880 and bring it to me when she visits me some time early summer.

Then it's the new Nikon D7100 coming with a lot of interesting features.
Which one should I pick ?

I know lens would be an important consideration. For the time being, I mainly borrow my dad's canon lens. If I switch to the other brand, I can use my brother's lenses.

Software & Accessories / my first PS exercise

Thanks to the kind people here who had helped me to make a decision to choose my 40D which I enjoyed shooting with very much.

I made a triptych with 3 photos taken with 50 1.8 and I followed Gavin Hoey's tutorial to edit and merge them to what it looked like in the attachment.

Hope you guys like it.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Canon 40D or XS
« on: August 17, 2012, 01:38:32 AM »
I am in the dilemma of buying either of the above cameras. My friend has a 40D and he's asking for $320 (body only) and his camera has 15K actuations on it. My brother insists that for the same money, I could easily find a XS with kit lens.

In some forums, people are saying that 40D had a bad shutter durability record. However, XS seems to me a lower end product of  canon to me.
My dad promises me to give me a few of his canon lenses to start with if I have a camera body. But, I worry about the err99 and shutter problem.

Can anybody enlighten me in this regard and help me to make a decision.
