Site Information / Adwords in posts?
« on: January 30, 2015, 12:39:40 PM »
I just realized (after incorrectly flagging a post) that some sort of advertising is putting links IN posts AND signatures.

Was this intentional?  If so, it's going to be hard to ferret out random links.

Please disregard a report earlier from me today; sorry for the confusion.

Third Party Manufacturers / Anyone Doing 3D Scanning?
« on: August 05, 2014, 02:46:14 PM »
Being a core member of the local hackerspace (Danbury Innovation Center), it was inevitable I'd end up dealing with 3D scanning.  I got tired of the MakerBot Digitizer sitting there, next to one of the 3D printers, and I decided to take it upon myself to get to know it.

I sat down with it last night, prepared for a marathon of adjustments and 'did everything right' -- that is, I set myself up the same way as I did for FoCal with proper lighting, making sure the surface was solid etc.  I only had one hitch in the setup and that was that it wasn't meant to be done in an optimized environment.

The halogens I was using were far too bright for the 'eye safe' lasers used (because apparently everyone tries to stick their face in the thing).

Having now read 99% of their website, the manual etc. the list of limitations are as long as my arm (not too big, not too small, not too dark, not too furry, not too much detail, not too shiny etc.).

For an $800 rig, they're calling it 'for early adopters', beta testers, etc.  Glad it wasn't my money  ;D

So, has anyone else done anything with 3D scanning?  Seems like it should just be an offshoot of macro, no?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Serial Numbers Sensitive?
« on: June 01, 2014, 03:57:05 PM »
Hi guys, another odd question.

I've occasionally seen images of cameras that had the serial numbers blurred out, like you do for license plates.

Any reason behind that?

I ask, because I want to post shutter count for sale of some of my bodies.  I can't see a reason the serial shouldn't be posted though.

Is there anything I'm missing here?

Third Party Manufacturers / C P S Central Warranties
« on: May 22, 2014, 11:09:28 AM »
Does anyone have any actual experience with CPS Central and claims?

The Gray Market 5Dmk3 that's listed on the front-page, the company says the warranty comes from that company.  Looking them up, I see some mixed reviews (mostly cell phones) so I shied away initially.

On Lens Authority, however, that is THEIR third party warranty, and I trust the LR people as much as here.

It's essentially an insurance plan that you have to use THEIR repair shop; just wanted to know if anyone has actually used them.

Thanks guys.

Third Party Manufacturers / "Higher Bit" Sensors
« on: May 15, 2014, 03:23:15 PM »
At a dinner party last weekend, we were discussing aspects of our amateur photography.

Being the resident geek, I'm usually asked my opinion about different equipment, and usually have halfway competent answers. These are mostly folks who have higher end gear than me, but generally, at the same events, end up asking me for shots because I do well with my 'pro-sumer' range of gear.

One question completely flattened me was about "when canon is going to come out with a 16-bit camera".   :o  Seriously, that was the face I made (I'm not going to go on about this or that if I have no clue).  Asked to explain, he said that canon camera bodies are 8-bit color and there are new 16-bit models of other cameras that increase the dynamic range of color.

Did he pick up some marketing-speek somewhere and it just not come out right?  Someone clue me in please :)

Thanks guys.

Canon General / Canon Loyalty Program question
« on: April 21, 2014, 10:56:35 AM »
Hi guys,

I've been toying around with the idea of using CLP to get a 5Dmk3 and was wondering if they have to show refurb stock on their website?

If they have to show stock, can you go on a wait list?

Just curious, since it's (another) big purchase, I need it go go smoothly lest the "I told you so" police get me  ;D

Animal Kingdom / Hungry Jaguar
« on: September 06, 2013, 12:06:46 PM »
I just saw this!

Not bad for a Nikon shooter . . . ;D

I've been trying to convince the wife to get a pet alligator (you know, 2-3 feet) . . . now I'm hoping she's a 'cat' person.

Technical Support / Not Windows
« on: July 29, 2013, 10:30:36 PM »
I'm at the point where I need a computer upgrade for Lightroom . . . because I get distracted when an image takes 10-14 seconds to process (yeah, I get distracted easily . . . uh, I guess I said that).

The problem is that I'm a mac guy, a mini, air, mbp, iMac . . . I just can't afford a pro ($1800 refurb, to start with).

Here's the problem, I don't mind working with Windows7 . . . but it's a step backwards, and the resource overhead I'm just not willing to deal with (I'm a programmer and pretty much EVERYTHING runs better on Linux/Mac).

So, my question is: for Linux, has anyone found a really good alternative to Lightroom OR are any of you running a high-end hackintosh?

Thanks guys!

Software & Accessories / Current Monitor Color Checkers
« on: July 01, 2013, 11:58:20 AM »
I had a Spyder2 years ago (which won't work at all with my newer computers) and have an empty spot on my wish-list since the wife is leery about those $2k-$3k entries ;)

I know a lot of you are using x-rite i1 and we've had this conversation on other threads, but as of half way through 2013, which software/hardware versions are you all using and on which OS?

I post-process on an iMac (latest version of the OS, LR4), but would consider it occasionally on my MacBook Air, the wife's MacBook Pro, or the Windows 7 (dell) laptop we have if I could do painless calibration on all of them.

Eventually, I want to get an IPS to PP on, so what limitations are there on the versions?

Years ago, the Spyder was entirely software-based for which version you got (key driven no less) and when looking at the 'advanced' features, they really weren't worth it.

Again, if you could state:
Hardware version/Software Version
OS Version & monitor type, that'd be a huge help

Thanks guys.

Software & Accessories / FF Camera Sleeve?
« on: May 27, 2013, 10:25:16 PM »
So, I've discovered the irony of my 5DmkII and the shorty forty . . .

If I treat it like a super-sized P&S, what camera bag would fit that, and only that?

I'm basically looking for a body-only case, that's just a hair bigger, and will fit with the pancake on.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Indoor Skydiving: iFly
« on: April 16, 2013, 08:49:29 PM »
Apparently iFly was on NikonRumors and got sick of it and sold all their gear and switched to Canon  ;D ;D ;D

Seriously though . . .

I took my boy to iFly (indoor skydiving) and saw the canon camera behind the glass.

They had the benefit of front-lighting, I was fighting that light from the back (won't know until I get home how well I did since I'll have to post-process for the lighting).

Bought a pic as a hedge against my still growing skills with the Tamron 24-70; I was mostly paying for the curiosity of the exif . . .

THAT said, I got what I wanted for $4:
They're using a 50D w/ 10-22mm.

Glass/plexiglass is truly my nemesis; I hate seeing my fat arse in the dang image ;)  I had both of my high-end filters, which DID NOT fit my lens (did I mention I'm still learning on the Tamron?) . . .

I'm going to scrutinize the image when I get home, but it was ISO 1600 and I was at 6400 with the 5DmkII, so wish me luck

Pricewatch Deals / Canon Speedlite 320EX Flash $169 @ Adorama (via Amazon)
« on: November 29, 2012, 08:47:37 AM »
Saw this on another forum, figured I'd clue in anyone here too:

If you're into that sort of thing :)

Hio all.

Now that we all are sure that Canon is descending into a death spiral with crappy products like the 5Dmk3 and pricing problems like all of their lenses . . . what's everyone expecting and doing for Black Friday?

Qualification: if you're out of the US, don't thread-crap that we're talking about US holidays . . . it's international at this point, since we get price depressions from now to Christmas in many places . . .

I'll start :)

I'm monitoring for 5Dmk3 deals . . . and ALMOST ready for signing the divorce papers if B&H or another major vendor offers that bundled with the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II for a crazy-arsed-price ;)

Other than that, going to troll around for an IPS monitor . . . and stocking up on MagLite LEDs, since I live in the northeast and CL&P can't manage to keep the lights on for more than 11 months at a time.

How about you?  How are you spending your black friday?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 60D Microfocus Adjustment on FoCal
« on: November 06, 2012, 02:29:26 PM »
Well, that has an attention-getting title, doesn't it?

Reikan is looking into the possibility that the 60D's lacking of MFA is only in the UI software.

I wanted to start this thread in case they DO get any traction and need test data or something else (I've been bugging them for a while).

I'm not sure if they're held up on reverse-engineering the software or if they actually need bodies for testing. They're in the UK; Greg told me they're located in the south, near Poole/Bournemouth.

I'll post back if I hear anything else, OR if they are looking for any bodies etc. (and people are willing to loan them one).

Software & Accessories / Affordable tripod ring for 200mm f/2.8L
« on: February 28, 2012, 07:42:51 PM »
As the subject says, I'm looking for a tripod ring for my new lens. Canon doesn't seem to have the ring online, and it looks like the 'Canon' parts online are over $100.

1) Ran into counterfiet Canon products online
2) It's not a HUGE lens, but I need a ring that's reliable enough to hold a camera and the lens
3) I need something affordable, which means under $90

Suggestions guys?

I've waited *SO* long to get this lens, and now that I have it, I swear I have a medical condition or something with the shaking :(

I appreciate the help; extra points for Arca Swiss :)
