i took my 6d on holiday with my 24mm 2.8 (non l) and my 100mm f2 (non l)  and the shots looked pretty good on the back of my camera. but after getting the raw files into light room, i am extremley disapointed with them, i expected a lot better shots than my old 400d , this is quite an investment for me, and to see the results so unimpressive is such a let down.

am i just being picky, for 2k worth of gear should i expect better than this? ive never been as dissapointed with a set of pictures than i am with these, it was my first proper foray with my new camera and although im no expert and i have taken some pleasing shots before with my old camera and the 50mm 1.8!

is it the camera or me?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / mirror lock up
« on: March 16, 2013, 06:34:50 PM »
ive been experimenting with mirror lock up recently, and it got me thinking, i should probably do some tests!

though probably very un scientific, i found there to be absolutely no difference between 1. remote shutter press and 2. remote shutter press+mirror lock up.

there was a noticeable difference for the worse when pressing the shutter button manually with either the mirror up or down.

this test was done on a tripod indoors same focus/apeture/iso  etc photographing some small writing on a side of a lens box.  zooming in 100% onto same part of the picture.

is mirror lock up just a battery waste?

should you always use a remote shutter press for EVERYTHING?  even hand held stuff if thats even possible ?

Lenses / best NON L long lens
« on: March 12, 2013, 07:24:04 PM »
im looking for a cheapish bird/garden lens   but cannot afford a nice L lens.

prime or zoom, doesnt bother me, probably 300mm+ on a full frame.

does any body know a good model from any manufacturer , of course its not gonna be the best optically, probably noisy, slow autofocus, bearing all that in mind, whats the best of the worst out there?

thanks for any recommendations

Lenses / 24mm (not is) 2.8 prime or 17-40 l zoom?
« on: February 27, 2013, 12:17:44 PM »
was gonna get me a 24mm 2.8 prime but  similar money second hand i have been tempted by the L lens 17-40

im just after a starter multi task WA which is really sharp,  has anybody got real world advice on the 24mm focal length on both lenses at similar apertures?

obviously one has bigger aperture (for lower light/street stuff/groups maybe) and the other is a zoom from 17-40 which is more fun!

i read the 17-40 can be soft edged compared to the 24, but every picture ive seen the 17-40 seems be awesome!

thoughts?

(on a 6d)

« on: February 26, 2013, 05:09:16 PM »
right, since my drive on my imac has nt worled for years, i cant install the eos solution disk and get the utilities fro updating etc.

i borrowed a laptop to copy the files to usb for the disk but looks like that cheap diskdrive on that is playing up aswell!

is there anywhere i can download this thing online??  apparently i can use an old copy and just update it, ive also tried changing the file from the most recent download update from canon but i dont think this works for the newer version!

very very frustrating!

« on: February 22, 2013, 05:30:42 PM »
this may be of no interest to anyone, but i got the 6d.

luckily the very amicable london camera exchange had one that had just been returned because the  owner changed his mind, bam 250 cheaper than i would have got it new for, and he only had it a few days!

looking forward to playing!

EOS Bodies / guess the spec
« on: February 20, 2013, 08:36:02 AM »
i thought it might be an interesting exercise to upload some pictures, and then guess the lens,L or nifty fifty? focal  length ,body, point and shoot or 1dx  etc.

i know this game is a minefield of pitfalls,  but youll just have to accept the rules.  JUST FOR FUN

heres a pic, what lens/focal length and body did i use?

EOS Bodies / on the verge of buying, just need some final moral support
« on: February 04, 2013, 05:25:13 AM »
hi, ive been waiting to get a FF for a while now, and im pretty sure im going with the 6d.

obviously 5d3 would be great but its just a little too expensive for me, and i think i can get a pretty good deal now on the 6d.

first up ive always had canon so im not interested in nikon (though if sony had a FF i would be v interested in that , shame)

forgetting the cost for a moment, im pretty sure that the 6d is the wiser buy as its a newer camera, id prefer to get a brand new model with warranty etc,

regarding features, im an intuitive shooter, so technicalities arnt really a huge concern, i usually only use single point focus.  now i gather that overall with a good lens image quality is gonna match anything in the same sort of camera range, ill take it travelling. and one day ill get an underwater housing.

im never gonna be a proffesionl studio photographer , but i will use it in a semi professional  fine art environment for a wide range of things . im a keen travel photographer too

can anyone talk me out of the purchase or pat me on the back and tell me im dong the right thing!

its a bit of an investment, so means alot.

thanks

EOS Bodies / 6d for underwater photography?
« on: September 27, 2012, 01:56:58 PM »
Im an experienced scuba diver whos shot a fair amount of pics on a few point and shoots , and ive been in the market for a FF camera for a little while with the intention of taking it underwater to take photos pf waterscapes  larger sealife and reefs etc.

do you think the 6d would be good for this?  ( just about my budget range)

plus points   good in lower light, fairly small. image quality (im sort of guessing here lol)

what do you think?

id really appreciate your opinions.  cant really see my self getting a 5d 2 for some reason, just seems to old now!
