Lenses / Considering the Zeiss 21
« on: February 10, 2013, 06:05:49 AM »
I'd welcome the opinion of those who have these lenses. I currently have the 17-40L which I find has good IQ and the 24-70II which has discernably superior IQ. Very sharp, contrasty - the whole shebang. I have had the Zeiss 21 Distagon on my radar for awhile now and am wondering about (generally) replacing the 17-40L with the Zeiss for landscape work. I find the zoom very handy for landscape and will still use it but am wondering just how special the Zeiss really is. Is it similar in IQ to the 24-70II? Or is it 'better'? The new 24-70 has spoiled me somewhat, and am keen to maintain that degree of awesomeness into something a little wider.

Thoughts welcome.

(Before you say it, I will likely pick up a 24 TS at some point in the next 12 months as well). Perhaps this is generally cramming the focal range?

Lenses / Canon 24-70 ii - another superlative
« on: January 16, 2013, 07:59:45 AM »
Yet another ringing endorsement on the new Canon zoom. I upgraded with a touch of uncertainty after selling off my old version simply on account of not using it much - but since that time, I was finding myself increasingly zooming to 40 whilst using my 17-40 as a street walk-around/night lens and so the new 24-70 seemed a good fit.

After a night of shooting tonight in the city, I am astounded at the sharpness, clarity and sense of dimensionality inherent in the images. The starbursts are so punchy and spikey - they resemble F11 or higher (I shoot usually at F8) and are clean and virtually flare free.

People may complain about the price but I tend to see why now - with a slightly heavy heart I agree this lens is worth every $$ - and as a tripod or day walkaround architectural lens, it's superb. I'm still not convinced about it as a people/portrait lens - for that I prefer the primes - but for everything else, it's fantastic.

Third Party Manufacturers / The seemingly amazing Sigma 35
« on: December 19, 2012, 06:27:39 PM »
I have the 35L and I love it. Despite its age it seems to deliver the goods and is sharp wide open.

By all accounts the Sigma betters it in most regards, including on price. I have no immediate plans to replace my 35L with the Sigma as in reality there is always going to be a 'better' lens out there somewhere. The idea of selling of L to get Sigma does seem slightly skew to me too.

Am I alone in this thinking or is this an opportunity to maybe pocket $1-200 on the side and land a 'superior' product, at least until the 35L ii arrives (which will likely be still much more expensive).

Thoughts?

Lenses / 24 1.4 II- wow
« on: November 07, 2012, 05:59:49 AM »
Being a wide angle shooter with an occasional penchant for portraits, this lens seemed to fit the bill for me and despite it's hefty price, I'm convinced of it's excellence. I simply cannot believe how razor sharp it is at 1.4 let alone 2.8. Despite comments I've read to the contrary, this has the sharpness/clarity edge on the 35 1.4 (and I rate that lens very highly). The shallow DOF at that focal length has a particularly 'journalistic' effect which is truly wonderful.

Just thought I'd put it out there at how chuffed I am.
