PowerShot / Re: Best Low Light Pocket Size Camera
« on: February 01, 2013, 04:15:45 PM »
I have an S100 and I have this camera out in low light situations a lot. For a pocket sized camera, its phenomenal. It was the first that series with Digic5. The S95 has Digic4 which I believe makes all the difference. There is far less noise in low light situations,
The S100 (GPS) and S110 (WiFi) should be the same with just a few differences in features. I was seeing the S100 available at Christmas in the $250 range which to me is a bargain for a P&S with some manual features.

With our prior SD990, Disneyland after dark with it was useless. This is much better!

Seriously, nobody needs that many low quality PS cameras that make no changes to image quality at all. Their pro cameras get 2 body releases per year, and their amateur DSLR gets a yearly refresh.

We tend to get lost in our own little worlds where our interests seem to be the only ones that count.
Canon sells boatloads of cameras to millions of people who could not care less about what a photo enthusiast feels is important.
The most important thing to us about those sales is that it helps create a company with enough size to actually fund an R&D program that can give us products like a 1DX that can actually be purchased at a believable price due to the economies of scale.

I am sure Phase One would love to have the volumes and cash flow that Canon has to fund R&D that is not dependent on companies that may or may not be in business in the near future.

This is very true. I think we are very fortunate that Canon has something for everyone in its lineup. Not everyone is a professional (me) and a 1DX or even a 5D3 would be completely overkill for a great many people.
There is an entire generation getting hooked on smartphone cameras (not me) that probably thinks the exact opposite of the original poster. Why spend thousands on pro equipment when I get decent pictures from my iPhone for what I need?
Go into the iPhone forums and read about it. There are people writing this stuff
The low end P&S market is actually shrinking, but its going to sell the most. Whats the most popular Canon DSLR? The Rebel series right? A camera and lense system worth thousands will probably be bought by the minority that make a living off of it or know how to use it properly.

I've traveled to hanoi and i think it's more beautiful than Ho chi minh city. Anyhow becareful going on Ha long Junk cruise "Boat Capsizes in Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay, Killing Foreign Travelers and Tour Guide

Have fun and be safe

Hanoi is more beautiful than Saigon, no doubt.

But surely you are not going to bring up every single accident there is - or has been - in this part of the world are you?! There are accidents and worse - probably more frequently - in global cities like London and New York.

That happened a couple of years ago and the government has gone after the less serious boat owners and the standard is much higher today, so don't worry about that.

Hanoi is more beautiful thatn Saigon, hmm that is a difficult one. I've lived two years in Hanoi and also worked a year and a half in Saigon having an apartment there so I would venture to say I know both cities quite well as I think you do too. They are very different cities, Hanoi is more old style beautiful, very elegant and charming. The areas around the lake and up in old town are fantastic and the Ba Dinh area obviously, closer to the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum. On the other hand Saigon is a more international metropolis, bustling street life, dirtier but still peaceful and beautiful in its places. Hanoi will always be my second hometown though, and Vietnam will always be my second country. I'm always at home when there although I currently live in Cambodia.

Tip to CR guys, if you can make your way to Preah Vihear, a temple a few hours north of Siem Reap it's very beautiful there. Southwest Cambodia around Kep is also very beautiful. Anywhere in the highland region in Vietnam is extraordinary, Da Lat as the most obvious, but remote areas in Dak Lak province is simply stunning. Even further north in Kon Tum. Qui Nhon on the coast of Vietnam. Clearly Hoi An of course. Mekong Delta in Vietnam is unique. Hue city in Vietnam will provide fantastic photo opportunities although the weather won't be the best at this time of year. Have fun there!

I'll second Da Lat, but it was a tough trip 12 years ago when I went with my wife up into those mountains. Its also kind of a tourist trap even for Vietnamese people. Even more so for a 6 foot plus causcasion guy such as myself...lol!
My wife is from Phu Quoc island in the south near Cambodia. I spent nearly a week there and had never seen such a beautiful place in my life. Endless opportunities for someone with a camera in this part of the world.
Would love to see pictures later ;D

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon Cannot Keep Screwing It's Customers Over

In my opinion all Canon products at release date are to much overpriced. After 1-2 years prices become more or less normal, however, still much higher comparing to such companies as Tamron and Sigma. Maybe some time ago Canon and Nikon were only two leading companies in lens production, however, latest test show that Tamron (especially with their SP 24-70 mm 2.8) and Sigma can compete with quality, however, their prices ar much lower.

In my opinion, Canon has a very good and quite loyal custormer base, however, people do not like to be screwed and, if Canon pricing does not change, then they will start loosing to other lens producers. I still have an biased opinion that Canon and Nikon cameras are the best, however, Sony, FujiFilm and other manufacturers are trying to change that concept in people's minds... especially whn  mirrorless cameras are becoming more and more popular. Nikon and Canon can not boast having strong positions in this rapidly evolving segment.

Boo hoo. Do you know how much margin they make on Coca-Cola? Beer? Cars? Apple's iPhones & iPads? LEICA???No one's screwing anyone, you have no right to tell me I got screwed by Canon when I bought my 5D3 and my 24-70 Mk II. If you don't want to buy it, don't. Businesses price their products by how people perceive its value, and what quantity they actually want to sell. Supply and Demand.

Finally Apple was brought up. There is a company that typically prices its products the same from day 1 of it's product life cycle all the way to the end, so the perceived screwing comes on the back end when the tech is older and outdated.
So, it could be worse.

I bought a 6D early in its life cycle. I know full well the camera will be cheeper later. It will get its use as it depreciates. I will have no regrets ;D

EOS Bodies / Re: Are you really serious about 6D?

Please help me understand why people are excited about 6D?

People are finally able to afford the Holy Grail - a full frame DSLR.
They are in awe and even 6D's single-point AF system (effectively) is holy.
It's a blasphemy to speak against it.

Describes me perfectly. Every day since I have had the 6D, I have been in awe ;D

EOS Bodies / Re: What will be the issue with the 6D
« on: December 10, 2012, 07:00:02 PM »
Well...I got my 6D...and the Wi-Fi was DOA.  The rest of the camera worked well. I did a shoot with it this weekend before I sent it in for repair.  I have to say, the High-ISO performance is phenomenal.  ISO 1600 looks like 100 on my 7D.

So far so good with mine. The first chance I had to play around with it was indoors at night at home. High-ISO performance is amazing! Being an early adopter of the 6D, its more than possible there will be issues. I can accept that with a new camera. I live 20 minutes from their repair facility.

BTW- I believe that a person like me is a likely target market for this type of camera. This is my first full frame. In fact, I skipped crop sensor DSLRs all together after owning a bullet proof AE-1 Program and having access to a couple of T-90's from the film days. when film died a sudden and violent death, money went into point and shoot digital cameras and camcorders  with the kids.
So I am going from an S100 to this. I would outgrow a T4i in a month, The 60D and 7D crops are going to be who knows what next year, and the 5Dmkiii is too much camera for me.
Good entry level full frame DSLR. If I grow out of this, maybe the 5D mark 4 or something.

I have a 6D with the kit lens pre-ordered from B&H. I just received the order confirmation yesterday and it was $200 less than retail even though online it still said $2899. I thought there was a nice mistake in my favor.
I just looked again online just and it's showing $2699 now :)
