Probably doesn't really matter.  If you get a second body that is less functional that the one you currently have,
you'll probably never use it.  If the second body has more function, then that will become your primary camera and your current body will become "backup".   Either way, the second body is mostly more of a pain in the .... to carry,
handle and use unless you have a competent "assistant".

A good quality SD card is about $10.00 for 8 gig, $20 for 16 gig.  So what's the big deal - skip a lunch and buy
one or two or three.

All valid points. But I REALLY don't have the budget to get a new camera body + new L lenses. I met with a gallery owner who said his clients want 20x30" prints and up. My 40D will do 12x18" before the quality degrades.
Could I just buy a newer Canon crop sensor camera, keep my ancient L lenses and get great quality 20x30" prints out of it?

Your "problem" isn't with the camera, it's with the printer.  I routinely print 60X100 prints from 12mp files - but only
after "fixing" them with photoshop/genuine fractals and then using an Onyx rip.  I'd investigate this solution
before plopping down money for a camera body that won't solve your problem.  The differences in your 10mp file
from the 40D and the 24mp file from the full frame aren't really significant when you're dealing with 600-900 megabyte amplified print files.  (by the way - a 20X30" print will usually only be less than 30 megabyte file)

I personally wouldn't carry that much.  Mount the 50 on the camera and pocket the 24-105 and you'll have plenty.
Use the room in your carryon to bring back scotch whisky.

I'd buy a 35mm f2.0 non-is for about $300, the 85mm f1.8 for about $350.00 and I'd save the rest until I knew
what I was doing and what I couldn't shoot the way I wanted to with the equipment I had.

two best scanner programs are silverfast and vuescan. both support your scanner - recommend vuescan as
cheaper, easier to use and wider variety of legacy scanners.

Buy now.  It's technology halfway through the product cycle and people like you provide the funding for future product improvements whether you know how to use them or not.  You'll help the economy, maybe get a few
decent snapshots and provide some struggling photographer a good deal when you sell it to upgrade.

Seems like a no-brainer.  You have lenses for the Canon system and you'd get to start all over with either of the
other two.  Also, the SL1 with the 40mm pancake lens is about as small as it's likely to get.  Haven't played with the SL1, but assume it's sort of a miniaturized Rebel with familiar menus and results.  (It's also cheaper if that's a consideration)  Only reason I have found for any of the ILS systems is the vast array of alternative lens adapters than may breathe new life into some of my old M42 and FD lenses.

Nothing fancy, just rock solid and functional.  Bit heavier than some of the carbon fiber types, but good design
overcomes a lot of obstacles.  Leitz Tilt-All - manufactured by someone else now but not too much over a
hundred bucks.  Durability?  Mine's over 50 years old without a problem and relatively "heavy" use.

Why can't canon issue a smaller body, optical rangefinder, fixed fast lens camera to compete with the
Fuji x100s?  It can't be a technical problem - it's canonet rangefinders were industry leaders.  It's not
a competitive problem with other point and shoot canon cameras.  It could compete at the 1000-1200
price point, decimate Sony's RD100, give buyer's an alternative to Fuji, and compete with camera phones
with a bigger, better image.

I would suggest a Leitz Tiltall - now manufactured by someone else but still available.  It's a classic and rugged design.  Mine has served me well for over 50 years and I've never been tempted to replace it with some of the
"newer" models.

While I've been critical of the M in past posts, I've just thought of an "improvement" that would make me
consider one - a native FD mount to be able to use legacy lenses for video.   A FD adapter might fill the bill
since a native mount would not make it past the beancounters and may actually be physically required -
even canon can't change the laws of physics - but the M4/3 guys seem to do well with a variety of adpaters.

I would think Canon executives feel the G1X is adequate competition for the x20 market segment.  Rather spend
the time to focus on the Xpro/XE segment and the M isn't going to cut it.  Given the choice of the M - even with an expanded lens selection - or an XE, the choice is pretty simple for me.  The SL is almost a competitor, but I'm not
sure the size difference between it and a Rebel will be much of a difference at retail. 
Canon faces a major problem in cannibalizing existing lines if they "innovate" too much.  I'd rather see them take the Apple approach and eat their own children with better more functional new offerings.
