Lenses / Re: 6D kit lens 24-105 F4L or 24-70Mark 1
« on: October 01, 2012, 03:02:26 PM »
I bought my 24-70 2.8 L mk1 last February when the mk2 lens was announced, before the demand and prices shot up on the mk1. I was very lucky, as I think I have a very good copy, and really love it's overall performance.
After using it awhile however, it became clear that it's a very heavy lens, and not the best for walking around with it in hand or around the neck all day. I decided that I wanted a high IQ midrange zoom for general use, but not one that's so heavy, so I picked up a 24-105 4 L IS. It was a great choice. It's very good with out being so heavy. In fact, I think the two lenes compliment each other very well. The 24-105 works as a walkaround lens outside where the light is usually fine, and the 24-70 shines for indoor/low-light and great bokeh.
My advise is to go with the 24-105 kit lens, as you will get a sweet deal with the 6D body, and its an excellent general purpose walkaround lens. If you find a good deal on a 24-70 mk1 or mk2, you can add it to your collection later.

Lenses / Update for the EF 24-105 f/4 L ?
« on: September 20, 2012, 12:30:47 PM »
We've been treated to a lot of new products from Canon recently. I wonder if there have been any rumors about a new updated version of the EF 24-105 f/4 L . The current original version is 7 years old, and has some known issues, such as distortion and a tight zoom range on the wide end. Makes sense to me that a replacement would be in the works. I have the version 1 of the EF 24-70 f/2.8 L and like it very much. No doubt I'd like the version 2 even better, but both 24-70 f/2.8 lenses are on the heavy side, and I was thinking of getting a high IQ but lighter lens to use as a walkaround, general purpose lens. Has anyone heard anything about a replacement or would like to make a comment?

Lenses / Re: 24mm F/1.4L II or 24mm-70mm F/2.8 II
« on: September 12, 2012, 08:17:13 PM »
Since you just got your 24mm f/1.4L II, I'd suggest you enjoy it and learn it's strengths and weaknesses for awhile before seriously considering buying the 24-70mm f/2.8 II. I have no doubts that the 24-70 is fantastic as Roger reported, but I think it would be best to wait awhile to see what a large group of owners report about it's performance, and if it's worth the high price it commands. I've had thoughts about getting one eventually, but i'd rather wait until more information is in so I can make a real world decision. That said, this doesn't matter if you have a real need for it soon, or have money to burn.

Thumper :
I have an EF-S 55-250 and I put a Canon brand 58 mm UV filter on it. The filter fits fine, and is perfectly secure when fully tightened down. Are the filters you have a major brand? I suspect that they may not be exactly the correct size they are labled. I may be totally wrong, but of course can't tell without looking at them. That does not explain why the filters fit on your 18-55 lens, but I can confirm that they should work on the 55-250 lens if they are 58 mm filters.

I'm using a Transcend 32GB class 10 SDHC card in my 60D. I have experienced the same problem with the buffer filling up and the recording of video automatically stopping. When this last happened I had used only 6.1 GB of the card. After downloading the images to my PC, I reformatted the card. High level not low. After this the problem went away, and I was able to record normally. Obviously, this has something to do with the 60D's ability to clear out the buffer on to the card when more than a certain amount of the cards capacity is used. Maybe it's a fragmentation issue like on a PC's hard drive. I think the format of the SD cards is the same or similar to Windows/DOS formatting. I do mix stills and video on the same card, mostly stills. I don't know if that's an issue or not. Anyway, reformatting is not a great fix but it does seem to work for awhile. Maybe a different grade of SD card would work.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my question. I found your input to be very valuable and helpful.

I decided to go with the 70-200 f/4 IS, and placed my order for it and a 5D MK3 body today. While I love fast lenses, I went with the f/4 because compared to the f/2.8 II, it is $1000 less expensive after the current rebates are added in.
Equally important, and the real deal maker, is the size and weight of each. The f/2.8 II weighs 1490 grams and the f/4 comes in at 760 grams. I own the 24-70 f/2.8 which weights 950g. I actually like the heft of the 24-70, but it's on the edge of being uncomfortable to use hand held for more than an hour or so. I was afraid that the f/2.8 II would be too much to lug around, especially since travel photography is one of major uses I would put it to.

Lenses / EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM vs. EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
« on: May 24, 2012, 05:12:36 PM »
Like a lot if us, I've got the bug and want the 5D MkIII. The current double rebate offering from Canon is motivating me to act soon. I'd really like to get the EF 70-200 f/2.8L II, but even with the $400 double rebate, that lens with the 5D MkIII would cost about $5600. Talk about sticker shock!   So, I'm considering the EF 70-200 f/4L instead at about half the cost with half the rebate. I don't have any experience with either lens. How do they compare as far as sharpness and general IQ are concerned? It looks like the f/2.8L II is the better lens with it's faster aperature, but the f/4L might be a good trade off since its smaller, lighter, and cheaper. My main concern is the image quality of the f/4L compared to the f/2.8L II.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon fixed 5DIII light leak with tape
« on: May 02, 2012, 08:49:04 PM »
I've got no problem with Canon's solution to the problem. I have no doubt that the tape used is appropriate for the purpose it's being used for. I'm also sure it will solve the problem very well. What I wonder about is after designing dozens of film and digital SLRs and manufacturing and selling them over many years, that the problem happened at all. You would think all that experience would have taught Canon to design a camera without these kind of problems. A good design would not let it happen. Maybe it's a cost of manufacture issue, but I don't think that should happen on a $3500 camera. However, I would also not doubt that other camera makers have done the same thing.

EOS Bodies / Re: Buy 60D or Save for 5D?

If you do decide to go crop rather than full frame, be aware that the t3i is smaller than the 60D. I looked at the t3i and found that it was uncomfortably small in my hands. The larger 60 D feels much better to me. Things like ergonomics can be just as important as other features when making a purchase.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon 5D Mark iii and 64Gigabyte SD card
« on: April 23, 2012, 09:13:10 PM »
I shoot mostly stills, 98+ % of the time, however for a test I just recorded 4 min of video at 1920x1080 30 fps and saw no problems. No frames were dropped. My 64 GB SDXC is Class 10 but not UHS-1, which would not do me any good with the 60D anyway.

I'm using a Transcend SDXC 64 GB in my Canon 60D without any problems. The card shows a capacity of 59.5 GB after formatting. If it works for a 60D, I would guess it would work for a 5D mkIII.

I'd like to see the focal length that a zoom lens is set at in the shooting function display of the info button.
