Technical Support / Re: Bad 5D Mkii or is Nikon that much better?

Are you sure you haven't dialed in any negative exposure compensation? And could you possibly post an example picture for us to see?

Software & Accessories / Marumi filters
« on: May 11, 2012, 08:18:06 AM »
So today I went to my local camera store - not a fantastic one, on a sidenote - to check out the options for a filter for my new 16-35. The best they could offer me was a 82mm Marumi filter. Does anyone know this brand, and recommend it? Because to be fair, the only brand I hear recommended consistently is B+W...

Thanks

Janne

EOS Bodies / Re: Replacement? (Equivalent)

I'll add a bit of info. I've so far had a bit of experience shooting indoor festivals in my homecountry (Belgium). Especially the I Love Techno festival. I used my 7D, 17-55 2.8 IS. 50 1.4 and 70-200 2.8. And indeed, 2.8 is rather slow, most of the time. One has to be lucky. Primes are something I want to invest in, but later on. The reason I asked this question was mainly because, on a second hand site, I saw an offer of a 5DII+24-105F4L IS for 900 euros. (And some more ridiculous deals, such as 5DII + 70-200F4L IS + 50 F1.8 + backpack for 900 euros, even just a body for 900, which still seems very low.)

Not sure what you mean by f/2.8 is rather slow - do you mean that at f/2.8 the shutter speed is too slow? If so just up the ISO

- how much light is there?
- how far from the stage are you going to be?
- can you use flash?
- are they going to mind if you use a large white lens?

Sorry about that; I'd just awoken :p I have no idea to express the amount of light, but I think @2.8 with a shutter speed of roughly 1/100s and iso of 1600 or more (this varies of course; what with lights constantly changing). Normally I'm frontstage; I don't take my gear with me to shows or festivals without a press pass. Flash is very rarely allowed; only to take pictures of the crowd. I've never had any trouble with my big white, but like I said, I only take pics when I'm allowed to.

EOS Bodies / Replacement? (Equivalent)

Hi all,

I have a theoretical question, with a hypothetical practical outcome.

Is a 5DII + 24-105F4L IS an adequate replacement for a 7D + 17-55F2.8 IS? Mainly in terms of concert shooting and therefore lighting, not FPS et al. I ask, because I have read about full frame cameras being able to 'catch more light', as it were. Would the first combination result in more light, thus requiring a lower iso?

Thanks in advance,

janne

Edit: added equivalent to the title, which might be confusing.

Canon General / Re: Suggestions for a difficult choice

That does sound interesting, I have to admit. Sports might, one day, be part of what I shoot. For instance, my cousin plays rugby, and I have told him I'd be shooting one of his games in the near future.

Currently I'm studying journalism, which I might combine with photography, and I think it's good to have gear of myself. Especially since most journalists tend to work freelance, forced or not.

However, the 5DII is not yet off the table. Not by a long shot  :P

And to be honest I was indeed also thinking of maybe going for the IS version of the 70-200... I should be working again at Christmas for two weeks, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem by then.

Huh, interesting replies both of you, I had rather expected the contrary  :)
Thanks.

Canon General / Suggestions for a difficult choice

Hello everyone,

I'm a firsttime poster on this forum, yet I've been lurking a while. Right now I'm working for a month (as a student) and I will be using the money earned for new gear. I have recently started shooting concerts as a hobby, and I enjoy it a lot. My current equipment won't cut it for much longer though:

- Eos 1000D (Rebel XS for non-Europeans)
- Ef-s 18-55 3.5-5.6 (no IS)
- EF 50 1.4
- EF 70-200 2.8 (no IS)

The latter two work somewhat, but even with the 50mm shooting wide-open I have to crank up my ISO to 1600, which on the 1000D, looks horrible.
Now with my budget - I'm guessing around 2200 euros - I see two choices.

- Eos 7D + 17-55 2.8
or
- Eos 5DII

If I bought the latter however, I would be without standard zoom or wide-angle. The rest of the money (depending on which I take) would be spent on accessories.

Any suggestions as to which I should take and why?

Thanks in advance,

Janne

P.S.: I also own a 580EXII, but usually at concerts, flash is not allowed.
