EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 1DX Color Noise

Red channel artifacts seem to be a bit ogf a Canon problem. I have it on my Canons and see it the most in blue skys when I convert to black and white filtering red in post.

I don't have this problem with my d800

Hello FredBGG.......I see that you liked my photo of my Fuji GX680iii that you found on my website.....

Gee... one would think that this community (as it is filled with photographers) knows that one should not simply rip off other peoples photographs. Especially when it kind of implies that you made the photograph yourself... not cool.

He is referring to the photo of the camera. I shot the portrait. We happen to know each other and have exchanged info on the camera system. Danny Burk like me is a Fuji gx680 enthusiast and pro photographer.

Yup... film is still my favorite

But with medium format cameras like this...

If the 1D X is anything to go by and the 5D III has similar improvements it should be interesting.

IF you look at the blacks in the sample files from the Canon 1D X they are much cleaner with more very dark and dark distinction. This is an area where 35mm DSLR cameras have been lagging way behind MF CCD sensors.

I heard about a year ago form someone at Canon that this generation of camera will have a significant increase in dynamic range.

I also found that the 1d X files also have remarkably natural skin tones and hold up better to modification in post that the samples of the Nikon d800.

It will be interesting to see the two different paths taken.

Canon IQ through tonal range/dynamic range and Nikon through MP count.

EOS Bodies / Re: What will we do after Feb 27/28?
« on: February 23, 2012, 02:46:58 AM »
Do what I normally do....

Get out my 20 year old Fuji gx680 and shoot film... for the more important work.

For the low budget or fast turnaround I'll shoot digital.... with the guns and whistles...
but it will still feel like heating up junk food with a microwave oven

EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: Why the hate for video capable DSLRs?
« on: February 22, 2012, 12:40:12 PM »
Just go and shoot with a medium format digital and you'll see that sensors designed for stills only do a far better job. Both color and black and white is better. Today's 35mm  DSLRs still can't match the color quality of 5 to 6 year old MF digital backs. It would be interesting to see what could be done with a 3 layer stills only sensor in one of today's high end 35mm bodies.

Now that is my ideal Zoom lens!!!!!

If the quality is anything like the 70-200mm 2.L IS II it will make me very happy.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon, range finder to medium format.
« on: January 15, 2012, 11:09:34 PM »
Contax was never a company. Contax was not a Kyochera company.

Contax is a brand name owned by Carl Zeiss. The brand was licencesd to Kyochera.

I do not think that Canon has any interest in buying a medium format company.

The number of sales of a medium format camera are too low to be of interest to Canon.

IF Canon were to enter into the MF market it would be for brand prestige... something they don't really need.

The push into cine cameras is an extension of their video and film buisness.

I think that we are more likely to see a new MF camera come from Fuji. They are the word authority in MF.
They designed and build the Hasselblad H series.

Fuji has made a decision to grow it's camera and photo division and become the number 3 camera company.
Part of that stratergy could well be to make a MF flagship camera and do so under it's own name.

They have definitely won a few hearts with the x100 and the new x-pro.

If Fuji can scale up it's sensor tech in the x-pro to MF it's game over.

Canon General / Re: Is anyone awake in Canon HQ?
« on: November 12, 2011, 01:12:09 PM »
I think the boys and girls art the Canon HQ are wide awake.

They also have the clout along with Nikon to say it's not about pixel count.
It's about sensor size and pixel size.

The new Canon 1D X is a step in the right direction.

I shoot 75% of my digital work with an 11 MP FF camera at ISO 100. It kind of funny that my day rate is about 2 to 4 times the used value of that camera.

I rent medium format digital occasionally, but more for "political reasons".

I still shoot my more important work on large 6x8cm film. No digital camera comes close to the aesthetic of larger medium format or large format lenses.

I really do not like the look of crop sensor 35mm cameras.

Canon is thinking outside of the spec number wars. I think we may see a very interesting flagship camera soon from Canon. In the video market they came out with a completely new format. I would not be surprised if they do it with a still camera too.

EOS Bodies / Re: RED - Scarlet.....
« on: November 04, 2011, 05:43:20 PM »
RED's folks say their servers got hacked so Jannard had to come out and demo, as the piece said.  Conspiracy theory time!

That is such bullshit.

First of all if you are having a demo in front of an audience, even if you are showing them
a presentation hosted on your website you use a local copy right off a laptop or desktop computer.

Also if you are presenting a camera that is 2k or 4k you don't show internet footage.

The truth is that Red did not know what was coming from Canon so they had to improvise.

Red unfortunately has a reputation of unstable cameras that crash. On top of that it is not very
reassuring that the scarlet X is being built around reject processors from production of the Epic.

That means the quality is claimed to be comparable  to the IQ of a Alexa.  The Alexa is a high end video camera made by Arri with a full frame 35mm sensor.

http://visionaryforces.com/arri-alexa-digital-video-camera.html
[/quote]

The Arri sensor is not FF in the same way the Canon 5D is.... it is not a 24x36 sensor.
The Alexa sensor has an image out size of 23.76 mm x 13.37 mm (16:9) is  2880 x 1620 Pixels

I don't see what all the fuss is about.

It's Facebook and some poor employeee of Nikon has to come up with something to post multiple times a day.

Personally I think it would be more interesting having a discussion about what a crap interface Facebook has and how it is a complete waste of time unless you are hoping to be discovered for the next reality show.

As far as photographers and their equipment....

Well to a certain extent they are right. many aspects of your images are going to be only as good as the camera can make them. In the real world, not that of one's own ego, the tools you use will determin the quality of your images. Depending on your style you need to choose the best camera for what you are doing to get the best results. This may mean a film point and shoot if you are terry Richardson when he want's that look. Too much "photographic technical quality"can be counter productive.

One thing is for shure. With the advent of digital larger format photography is being lost.
You can use whatever L lens you want or top of the line leica odr Nikon lens, but due to the optical limitations of smaller formats you will not get that dimensional look of larger formats.

MF format digital is right at the low end of the MF size scale.

I for sure am my best with a big sheet if 8x10 polaroid or tri-x in an 8x10 camera with a Symar 480mm lens. Camera brand not important... it's just a box.

Do I take good pictures with a 35mm DSLR.... yes, but my best are with 6x8cm film or bigger.

Equipment really does count and Nikon does not make what IMHO really counts... neither does Canon.

With a shitty camera , my talent does not change, but my photographs will and I will not be as satisfied as I would be if I used what I wanted.

The good thing is that the really good equipment is cheap these days... well as long as it lasts...
large MF cameras and large format cameras are easy to find used at very nice prices.

I paid about $ 2,500 for a lens back in the day. I bought one for $ 250 the other day. Same formidable 180mm f3.2 Fuji GX680 lens.

Lenses / Re: Fujinon for Canon? [CR1]
« on: September 23, 2011, 12:48:04 PM »
My history doesn't go back that far, but when was the last time Fuji seriously dabbling with SLR lenses? I recall they did a series of SLR bodies not long ago but they used Nikon mount.

I can't see them becoming yet another mass market 3rd party SLR lens maker like Sigma/Tamron. Have they historically done exotic lenses that might be of more interest? Could they be "video" lenses?

Fuji currently makes all of the Hasselblad H Series lenses.
Fuji makes and designed the whole Hasselblad H system. It was initially the Fuji GX645.

Fuji has also hinted very strongly at returning to making high end luxury cameras.

Hasselblad was bought up by a German investment group. Seems that Fuji that has deep pockets was not interested. Fuji also passed on buying Pentax.

This rumor of Fuji making EF lenses may be just part of Fuji's strategy to bring it back into the high end DSLR market, both 35mm and MF.

Start by impressing the market with the lenses and then follow up with cameras.

I think it is safe to say that the sleeping giant has awoken.

No other large photography company  has the dimension of the Fuji group.
None of the others have the "NEW" pedegree of still developing film cameras and bringing back
previously discontinued films.
Fuji could soon establish itself as the premiere photography company in the world.

Going back to the lenses I use the Fuji GX680 and the lenses for the GX680 system are
very special. The 180mm f3.2 with 6x8cm negatives or slides is simply amazing.

Fuji replaced Zeiss as the Hasselblad lens designer and manufacturer.
I can see this happening in cinema lenses too.

Unlike Canon and Nikon Fuji is a film manufacturer and it's S5 super CCD years ago had a dynamic range
that only very recently has been matched by other sensor manufacturers.

"massive jump in dynamic range"
This would be very interesting, but it would be silly if this "massive jump in dynamic range" were not included in the flagship camera.

Canon General / Re: DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MACRO LENS
« on: August 09, 2011, 01:16:23 PM »
the 100mm 2.8L macro is a brilliant lens.

for the hell of it here is a "pixel peep" at 100% magnification and crop of a file from a Canon 5D Mark II.

It is my favorit Canon lens. The combination of macro, 100mm focal length, rediculously good IS, light, very nice bokeh, internal focusing, very light and a touch of that medium format look to it.

Portrait

the forum does a funny scaling to it..... click on it to see it better

I am looking forward to putting a next generation sensor behind this lens.
