PowerShot Cameras / Re: Canon PowerShot G15

F1,8-F2,8 is great, but it's sad to see they keep the same focal lengh

6,1-30,5mm means keep 28-140mmmm
I would have strongly preferred a start at 24mm

I have no inside info - just guessing based on technology and Canon's other products.
Recall that the G12 was introduced together with the S95 (the predecessor to the S100).  So the G12 is now 2 generations old.
I think the body size, lens, and ergonomics of the G12 are already pretty good - I can see why Canon doesn't see a need to change them.
But I think we'll see the G12 replacement (G14, at a guess) has the CMOS 1/1.7" sensor from the S100 (or slightly newer), DIGIC 5, improved movie mode (1080p/60 would be great), and the high-speed movie capture from the S100 (200 and 400 frames/sec).
I hope it'll also have GPS (again like the S100) for geotagging.

And maybe, maybe, if we are very lucky, it'll have hybrid phase detect/contrast detect focusing (like the latest Rebel).  That would mean a huge (and much-needed) improvement in focus speed.

If it has even 2/3 of those, I'll buy one the first day it's on the market to replace my G11.  I've been waiting a long time, and the G1X isn't what I'm looking for.

If I'm right, externally the new camera won't look much different - same body, lens, controls.  But inside a lot of changes that matter.

I agree with you, but about the lens: the quality is there, but the G12 lense specifications are quite outdated: 28-140 f/2,8-f/4,5 are ridiculous compared with new Nikon P7700 28-200 f/2-f/4
I hope Canon will bring a new lense. as written above, a 24-180 f2/f/4 (or 24-140 f2-f/3,5) would be perfect

But that make sense to keep the sensor size unchanged
the Canon range is good:
- expert compact with "small" sensor and versatile lense: G12, G14... Gnn
- expert compact with large sersor (but bigger body and of course, unfortunaltely, less versatile lense, but good for bokeh) : G1X, G2X.... GnX

a G12 replacement I’m told is likely, as well as a new fast lens PowerShot.
Does this mean the G12 replacement won't have fast lense but we will have to choose between a G12 replacement (with all G12 capacities: tilting screen, optical viewfinder...) OR another camera with fast lense?

crazy Canon!!!

Do you really think the market and customers need one more proprietary/specific mirorless format?

The only interesting thing if Canon join Mirrorless would be to see they join micro 4/3 group, even i doubt this could happen.
This would stregthen considerably this format (so this would vallue the Panasonic and Olympus offer, but also this new Canon offer, compared with all other competitors), and Canon users of a Canon micro4/3 body could benefit for the wide range of quality lenses yet available on the market. Canon would not have to develop a complete range of lense for the launch of their product but can do that little by little.

mirrorless: micro 4/3 or nothing.
I'm affraid Canon won't chose this way... but i strongly believe they SHOULD do!

I love Canon powershot G serie... but i definitly think that Canon should also joins micro 4/3 consortium, and build micro 4/3 camera and lenses

No one need one more proprietary EVIL camera. But chosing "standard" micro 4/3 could help Canon to go to this market step by step (no need complete range of lenses for the beginnning, because many micro 4/3 lenses are yet available form other manufacturers), and the most important: this would very strongly comfort the position of the micro 4/3 manufacturer (so including Canon) against all other who chose proprietary format: Canon would be "one among 3" and not "one among so many"

mirroless a niche market? now 20% of market shares in Japan, and still growing!!!

I definitly think that Canon should join micro4/3 consortium.
If they don't have mirorless offer, they will loose a growing (and in the future significant) part of their market.

If they adress this market with one more proprietary solution, they will be "one among many"... they would not get a great visibility on the market.

If they choose micro-4/3, that is in my opinion the best balance betwen compacity (for cam, but also and mostly for lenses) and quality, they would contribute to credibilize and valour the micro 4.3 concept.. and will be "One among only 3 cam manufacturers (Pana, Canon and Oly)"... and this will be a big hurt for other mirroless cam manufacturer who choose proprietary solutions
