EOS Bodies - For Stills / Finally a DXOMark win for Canon
« on: April 04, 2013, 03:04:51 PM »
At a per megapixel level the Canon 5D Mark III sensor is sharper than the D800 and with the lens line up Canon sensor manages to get the best out of the lenses compared to the Nikon!

 Finally some good news :D

The 5D Mark III is now retailing at £2799 in the UK at Jessops, a few days back it dropped to £2899 from its starting price of £2999.

This is basically a £200 drop in price!

Meanwhile Digitalrev are selling the 5D Mark III at £2169!!!!!! Yes its an import but still £600 cheaper!!!!

To be fair to Ken have you seen his latest update? He prefers the 5D Mark iii over the Nikon d800!!!
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/00-new-today.htm

Reviews aside when it comes to day to day use he prefers the 5D Mark III!!!!

Whilst Canon did not deliver an amazing megapixel camera, what they did produce is a photographers camera!By the sounds of it an extension of the eye!

EOS Bodies / Re: Getting a bit restless at the lack of 1DX rumors

They probably removing the extra OPLF filter that has caused video uproar on the 5DIII, a sharper video mode on the 1DX will position the 1DX over the D4! so at least at the highest pro camera they can offer better pic, more megapixel and better video than Nikon!

I believe the prices will come down sooner, especially with the sales of the D800 being so high! Canon cannot afford to let its reputation as a leader slip!

Also the landscape of photography has changed since 2008! Now far more amateurs are looking to go full frame, and far more movie makes are switching to DSLR! Actually the BBC and Hollywood using them too!

I actually came to photography from Astrophotography! And for years the community chose Canon as its DSLR of choice as it seemed to work better for long exposures and less noise. Canon identified this and released the 20Da.

Essentially since the 20Da was retired many astrophotographers have been hacking DSLR and removing the UV filter manually to increase the colors in HA.

The haze captured in the photos are called nebulosity and something astrotogs look for as it shows the feint dust clouds! However these pics with the exception of M42 have not been tweaked for contrast!

Whilst CCD cameras are used for monochrome images, the larger sensors are high MPX means higher resolution pics!

A lot of CCD cameras are cooled as when open for long exposure the sensor heats up and generates more noise! Yes temperature of the sensor has an impact on noise performance wonder how many people factor that into their noise tests!

However a Full Frame CCD sensor puck is in the 1000s and can only be used for astro! now by removing the UV filter it does make the camera almost unusable in the day as all images capture more Colors in the infrared!

But i am happy Canon released this camera should have done so sooner!

EOS Bodies - For Video / Act of Valor
« on: April 01, 2012, 07:46:51 AM »
Looking to get some post tools and was looking at the Adobe website and the Bandito Brothers movie! And they shot that movie using the 5D Mark II! I mean the shots looked amazing!

The 5D Mark II really is a great camera and for all its short coming in the right hands is awesome, and I believe that the Mark III basically improved on the whole package without focusing on any particular area! So whilst the MPX has not increased a lot, in every other aspects it has improved:

Body
AF
MPX
ISO
Headphones
Manual Audio Control
etc.

EOS Bodies / Re: Lloyd Chambers Review of 5d3
« on: March 31, 2012, 01:14:42 PM »
Watched the Digitalrev hands on review and comparison to the D800 so far it appears the Mark III is an all round better camera, better video. However the Nikon has the resolution. Kai who is seen as a Nikon fanboy prefers the 5D over the D800!

And can someone please tell me how people prefer the Nex over any other camera system model based on Sensor alone? As with the exception of the Zeiss 24, none of the other lenses are good enough on that system. In fact the sensot out resolves all the kit lenses, and the micro lenses on the sensor does not play well with many legacy lenses!

Which leaves me asking this question how do so many people talk bout the Nex series and forgetting the lenses they have!

I have a Nex5n and whilst the camera is great the lenses are poor, and big! Prefer M43 for my small take everywhere camera!

I will probably pick up Mark III later this year say August especially if video work picks up!

EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: Video Review @EOSHD
« on: March 28, 2012, 10:34:18 AM »
EOSHD guy is not happy with the Mark III because of he codec seems to add noise to the video and when compared to the GH2 (HACKED), the GH2 fair relatvley well and is far cheaper!

I have seena  few other sites bragging on about the GH2 (HACKED) vs other cameras!

Now I recall Digitalrev reviewed the GH2 using native video and it was pretty much a coin toss between that and the 60D and in some parts the 60 besting it.

So to conclude is the 5D Mark III waiting for a hack before we see its true video potential? Also will any hacks trigger Canon to make it official or fix the codecs as they did with the 5D Mark II?

And finally whats the chances of the 4K DSLR being a 8MP camera? Essentially shooting stills at 24 FPS with no AF! It would be a no wow photo camera, but for video it could be the sharpest around as long as the codec is done right!

The C300 is 8MP so the 4k one might be 32MP. Sadly it will be another 1 series brick sized though arrrrrrr.

I think Canon is looking to target the 5D as an all round camera for photos with some video chucked in! And hence using the video as a test for the 4K camera! After all the reason people for the 4K DSLR existence is Canon recognised many film studios were using the 5D Mark II!

If this camera has a high MP than yes it will be expensive. Anywy we shall see!

Will wait out as I assume thr 5D will drop in price when the 4K hits!

EOS Bodies / Mirrorless Wish
« on: February 19, 2012, 08:10:29 AM »
I have a 5D MKII and also a Lumix G3 and Sony Nex5n. I use these 3 cameras when travelling and fid alwasy the 5D is the king of IQ. Even though the sensor is 4 years old, it easily beats out the G3 and Sony!

I think that Canon could easily build a mirrorless camera around the 5D Mark II sensor, and it will be the boss of the mirrorless world! It will even given the m9 a rund for its money, all they need to do is combine with the DiGic 5!!!

The only issue would be lenses for the system! But if canon use the Leica model for Flange range they could really have small lenses!

I dream but would love to see a FF mirrorless that is affordable!

p.s. both G3 and Nex5 in daylight offer great IQ!

EOS Bodies / G1X Sensor?
« on: January 11, 2012, 09:14:41 AM »
The sensor size of the G1x seems an oddball for me, whilst its not an APS-C , it is still slightly bigger then a M43. however does have the 4:3 asepct ratio!

Someone in another forum pointed out that the GH2 sesnor is almost identical in size to the G1x. Could this be an indication that Canon's mirrorless will be a m43?

I think it would make sense as m43 is smaller then the dslr, whilst maintaining good IQ. which is something similar to canon statement recently.

As for the Nikon the V/J1 has got some good reviews, but i think sensor is to small for long term!

now if canon join M43, it would be intersting as already lots of great lenses for the system!

the only reason canon wil not join is because of a EF adapator with autofocus and aperture control! And will not want to hae their lenses on other manufacturers bodies!

Though i do hope they join M43 as i believe the system is the middle road between dslr and compact. And like HTML 5 a open standard is being embraced by many big manufacturers, i hope camera manufacturers use the same.

PowerShot Cameras / Re: Canon PowerShot G1 X Announced
« on: January 09, 2012, 01:08:53 PM »
Canon released a compact with a bigger sensor then M43 with the same technology as the EOS. This could be the sensor Canon uses for its mirrorless camera system in the future. As they did with Digic 5 debuting in compacts before DSLR, they may test the sensor with this camera before releasing full blown mirrorless system!

So the current crop looks around 1.7 to 1.8 which means new lenses for the system, but also an option to mount EF lenses!
