I just received my battery grip and I will say that I am very impressed with the quality. I purchased the 5DIII as the 1DX I have on pre order just won't seem to arrive. In any event with the battery grip the 5 now feels very similar to the 1DIV. I sorely missed the portrait grip as I sold my Mark III and replaced it with the 5D.

Although it could never be as solid as a 1D body, it more than suits my needs. LOVE the extra joystick on the grip and I'll look forward to having that as well on the 1DX. Also there was some mention of the on/off switch on the grip. The 1D Mark III and IV both have an on/off switch for the portrait grip and I find it valuable. I carry my rigs inverted using Sypder Holsters and being able to turn the portrait grip on and off prevents me from taking inadvertent hip shots!

I would recommend spending money on a good class like those held in Santa Fe or other recognized instructional courses. So much of what comes out of your work lies behind the camera and lens rather than the type of equipment you utilize. Sure, equipment can make a difference, but my personal belief is learning HOW to use your gear improves a shot much more than the gear itself.

Like so many other pursuits we tend to focus our attention on gear and that's evident on all forums be they photography, cars, or other hobbies. I taught closed course motorcycle racing for years and was always pleased when students improved their lap times through instruction and practice much more than buying new gear. "Seat time" as we called it with proper instruction may be something you want to consider.

Thank you friedmud for your kind words. My first love is street shooting, but alas I have little time to be out there anymore.

Rain? So what!

So lets see some of these photos taken in the rain.  Seriously.  If you keep on shooting when it starts to rain, lets see some of those photos.

EOS Bodies / Re: Should i go for the 1DX or the 5D Mk III?

Someone mentioned that the choice between a new 5D or 1DX depends on how large a print one plans to make. I currently use a 1DMIV for commercial work, primarily live performance and studio work. I have found that my images CAN and have been used for large outdoor media, like billboard ads. The file attached shows one of 16 billboards located in the greater Seattle area. My blend of customer needs between low light/high movement theatrical work and studio sessions puts me in the position of opting for the 1DX where I've placed my deposit. I had thought about purchasing a 5D II for studio work, but find that the 1D series fits my needs better on an overall basis.

Each person must assess how their needs fit a particular camera. I just wanted let you know that although some of my colleges do utilize medium to large format for advertising, it is not always necessary for large commercial work.
