I think i have narrowed down the problem to LR.  If i import a raw file, open, completely unprocessed (no levels, no sharpening, no noise reduction) in LR and DPP (same file), the noise in LR is easily visible even at very low ISO-(640 in the accompanying example) and absent in DPP.  If i add any sharpening in LR, the noise is intolerable but remains absent in DPP.  Is this normal?

I have noticed the same problem and posted about it just yesterday ( http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=12576.0         )          I have found that if I open the very same raw file in lr vs DPP the Lr version appears much more noisy.  I thought it was related to the ISO but am now convinced it is Lr.  Is it possible it is the raw converter or the way it is rendered in LR? I am shooting with a 5d3, using a Mac with osX mountain lion, Lr 4.
Not offering help, but also looking for the same answer.

I have a problem:  I have a 5dIII but have been totally dissatisfied with the amount of noise in the photos despite hearing others with the same camera rave about how they can push the ISO to 12800 without a problem.  Today, for the first time, I opened a file with DPP and noticed the noise level is dramatically less than seen when using Lightroom.  To date, my workflow has been to shoot in raw and import directly into LR as a DNG (todays shots were imported as CR2 as DPP does not appear to read DNG.)  Both of the attached shots (100% crops) have no noise reduction applied and equal amount of sharpening.  My prior camera, a 20D, did not seem to have this problem.
Any thoughts?  I have spent a lot of time and effort learning LR and don't relish the idea of having to master DPP.  Do I have to import with DPP and then move to LR to edit?  If so, how do I do that?  Is there a setting in LR that I am missing (btw, version 4.3)?  Thanks!

I have used my carbon fiber ice axes in extreme cold without difficulty.  Also, no problems with my carbon fiber moutain bike which maybe a better comparison given weight, tube dimensions etc.

I believe CF is not constructed the same depending on the purpose.  For tripods it can be thin and tubular for strength and keeping things light.  For aircraft and space I'm sure they are different.

Regarding your Carbon Fiber tripod... that should be good down to about -4 degrees F (Induro specification).  Below that it can become more brittle and easier to damage and likely would not be covered under warranty.

I wonder about this - I've read statements like this posted several places, but CF tubing and plating is commonly used on the exterior of deep space vehicles which function near absolute zero (e.g. Voyager 1's main antenna dish is CF).  Maybe it's down to the resin used to bond the carbon fibers into shape?  Most resins are quite cold resistant, and constitute <30% of the tubing material (the rest being carbon).  So I wonder if the 'carbon fiber shatters when it gets too cold' is just an urban myth?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Noise

Using my 5d3 I seem to find the noise is higher than i would like or expect. I have seen others post that they have low noise with ISO as high as 10,000.  Honestly, it doesn't look a whole lot better than my 20D.  I am shooting with low ISO, anywhere from 100-400 in raw format.  Importing with LR as DNG in case that is important.  Any thoughts?
