BTW there will be no future P&S cameras, they will be replaced by smart phones :)

Completely agree.

I think the majority of camera owners will never own a camera that costs more than $350 but they will own a smartphone that will take pictures as good as a P&S.  These pictures will never be printed they will just be sent in text messages and posted to Facebook.  IMO some of the new smart phones do a great job for this level of photography.

1st Thanks to the poster for putting up the video.  It is great to start seeing the 1Dx in peoples hands.

2nd The poster has said future videos will be horizontal.  He is new to posting videos online.

3rd  This video reminded me of another video put together by a Canadian Comedy troupe.  It is pretty funny and not meant to hurt anyone's feelings.  :-)

Canon General / Re: Best Filter for 40mm Pancake?
« on: June 08, 2012, 11:43:37 AM »
Thanks to all that replied.  This was exactly what I needed to know.

I am going to look into one of the higher quality filters.

@preppyak The 50 filter experiment was a great demonstration.  Thanks!

For what its worth, my intention was not to let my kids play with the camera all the time.   It has been my experience when you get down on their level they do love to reach for the lens and they do like to take pictures with some assistance.  Just having a little more lens protection for potentially 'hectic' situations is comforting.

BTW.  I am very excited about the 40mm pancake.  I have been hoping for a lightweight versatile lens for around the house and events.  I have the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 and from time to time I wish I had a smaller lens.

Thanks! -- Steven

Canon General / Best Filter for 40mm Pancake?
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:21:19 AM »
Interested in what everyone thinks is the best filter for the 40mm Pancake?

I am looking protection from scratches and fingerprints from a 3 year old, with out effecting image quality.

I have pre-ordered the lens and B&H recommended a $6 Tiffen UV filter.  Is this one as good as any?  I do not mind spending more if the money is well spent.

I guess the question could be: Is it a good use of money to upgrade from a $6 UV filter to a $30-$50 UV filter?

Thanks! -- Steven

I have seen sites similar to this with incredibly low prices.

When you get to the payment part of the process they only way to pay is using a bank transfer.

No Credit Cards, No Paypal, just wire transfer.

My guess is this site is the same way and also a scam.

United States / Re: 70 - 200L IS MII vs 70 - 300L based on price

Thanks so much for the replies and info.

@ xROELOFx I currently have the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8

I am leaning to the 70-200. It is a little larger is size but better suited for my needs, Except travel. (can't have everything, where would you put it).  Being as I have two kids under 3, we are not traveling that much these days.

$1974 will probably be the best price for a while.  I think the new standard price will be $2199 based on canonpricewatch MAP info. Not entire sure what MAP is all about but I get the feeling it is the new starting point for prices.

Thanks so much! -- Steven

United States / 70 - 200L IS MII vs 70 - 300L based on price
« on: November 29, 2011, 09:32:31 AM »
First thanks so much for this great forum.

I have been thinking about a nice telephoto zoom and been looking at the 70-200L IS MII or the 70-300L.  I currently have a 60D.

Current Prices:
70-200 = $1974
70-300 = $1369 ($600 Less)
70-300 + tripod collar = $1369 + $150(approx) = $1519  ($450 Less)

Based on the current prices would you step up to the 70-200 IS MII?

Originally I was thinking of the 70-300 based on price but for the next few days the 70-200 is less than $2000, making the prices closer.

I like the fact that the 70-300 is smaller but I really like the idea of flexibility of f/2.8 on the 70-200.  I have a feeling I will be in more low light situations rather than needing the extra length.

All opinions are welcome! -- Steven

Thanks to everyone for this very helpful thread. Very happy with my 17-55 purchase. Having lots of fun learning the 60D and the 17 - 55 lens.

I was able to find an excellent used copy for $820 (lens hood included), had it checked by a local camera shop and it had no problems.  The owner was switching to primes.  There was a little bit of dust but it does not show up in images.

I found a great book of photo exercises which walks your through the basics.  My plan is to practice and learn everything on the photo side and then move to video.  I have been working on light balance as well as using an incident light meter.

Glad I made the purchases and really looking forward to taking lots of photos during the holidays.  We have 2 little girls.

Thanks again to everyone's input and advice!  -- Steven

United States / EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 or EF 16-35 f/2.8L
« on: November 04, 2011, 05:15:38 PM »
First thanks to everyone for their posts and information.

I just purchased my first real DSLR body a 60D today.  My neighbor will let me borrow some lenses to get me started.

I was thinking of going with the EF-S 17-55 but I started looking at the 16-35L

Which do you think would be a better lens if you can only have one?

The primary use of the lens interview videos in a studio setting
Family pictures, I have two little girls.
Pictures around the house and places we go.
Other fun hobby photos.

I am leaning to the 17-55 but I like the fact that the 16-35 is an EF mount and could work with a full frame camera.

Which do you think will work better on a crop body?

I will probably try to rent each lens to try it out but interested in peoples experiences / opinions.

Thanks so much.  Cant wait to start with my new camera! -- Steven

Does anyone know what time this announcement is going to be?

If I remember correctly the Presentation starts at 6PM west coast time.

So it will probably be later tonight before someone is able to tweet out the details.  Not sure this event will have the same number of live bloggers as the iPhone 4S announcement. :)

Hopefully Canon will send out press releases with all the details shortly after the cameras are announced.

I believe the Red announcement will be at 6PM west coast time.

Hope this helps! -- Steven

For what it is worth I am going to predict that the 5D Mark III will be announced and available for Christmas.

I would not bet much on this prediction but I feel we will see the 5D iii mentioned.

I am probably wrong but this is a rumor site and it is fun to speculate.

We will find out in a few days.  :)

I noticed on the canon USA website at least that the 5D2 rebate has been removed... They have a 60D and a T3 rebate plus lenses rebates so I would guess that if website haven't been updating their prices, they will be soon unless canon extends the rebates

Do you have the link to this page?  I am very close to purchasing a 60D.

Thanks! -- Steven

@mr.ranger and @ianhar  Thanks so much for the advice.  Your experience is really appreciated.

I talked with one on my neighbors (who has a 1D? and 5Dii) and he will let me borrow a couple of inexpensive primes once I get my body.  This way I do not feel rushed and will be able to tryout several lenses.

I think I was assuming that there is an absolute but perhaps when looking at similar lenses, subjectivity and gut feel start to play a bigger role.

Thanks again for the advice! -- Steven

Thanks for this post.  I am in a similar position, would love for the 5Diii to be out but have a feeling it will be 8-10 months until it is available for purchase.  I will be using the camera for filming interviews and product reviews both in a studio setting as well as family (I have a 3month and a 3 year old) and hobby photos.

I am pretty set on going with a 60D body. Just trying to figure out the right lens.

First I was thinking of a prime around 30mm, now I am thinking a wide angle zoom will be more versatile.  Trying to decide between the EF 24-70 f/2.8L or the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM like mr.ranger mentioned.

@mr.ranger do you think the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM is the better way to go?  It feels sort of weird buying a lens that is only limited to a crop body, but  the reviews indicate it is sharper than the EF 24-70 on a crop body.

Do you think the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM could work well for filming video in a studio setting?

Which lens would you go with for a Canon 60D?

Thanks so much! -- Steven

Hrm, the price of the EF 24-70 f/2.8L has been steadily climbing over the years, I wonder what a II would go for if released .

I have been considering this lens and also noticed that the price has been rising.  What is the reason for this?

What would be the advantage to leaving  IS (image stabilization) off?

The ideal announcements for me in the next couple of weeks would be new entry level full frame camera that has nice video features and the announcement of the EF 24-70 f/2.8....
