Some other forums have a minimum quote/own content relation ratio, but I guess that's not possible with the current cr software.

I have not been able to limit the size of a quotation field, or to remove images that are included in a quote thru the standard moderator interface.  Its probably possible to modify the program to do this, but then, with every new version of SMF, it will have to be modified and tested, and fooling around with things like that commonly break a large forum like CR.

Strange things creep in all the time from some seemingly unrelated change.

It is a visualisation of your post number... Or the camera under it. Neuro has the most, while first posters have only one. ;)

The forum Membership is broken into several member groups.  Each member group has a name associated with it, and a number of bars, stars, etc.

As the number of posts goes up, a Member is automatically moved to a different member group, and the number of bars changes to the setting for that member group.  We could have done it like Canon Cameras, and reduced the number of bard down to one for the highest level of posts.

One advantage of breaking the membership up into different groups is our ability to allow different forum capabilities to higher posting members.  We can also setup member groups by invitation or subscription only, and make them visible to certain groups only.

That's why you don't see the groups reserved for selfies and nude photos posted by movie stars and celebrities ;)

You don't see the user group that Admins use to exchange routine forum operation information either.

The Buy and Sell group is another example of a limited membership group, everyone can see it and post to a existing topic, but starting a new for sale topic is limited.

1D X Sample Images / Create a Topic to Show YOUR Images taken with a 1DX
« on: November 06, 2014, 09:29:40 PM »
I suggest that you create your own topic to show your images.  That's why a entire board was created for a single camera model.

If too many images appear in a single topic, then it slows the rendering down and gets difficult to view.

At some point, topics with too many pages will be locked.

Canon General / Re: new 70d, wrong manual, no plastic wrap
« on: October 23, 2014, 12:46:46 PM »
Thank you all for your replies. I bought this from a the website of a major retailer in France (Carrefour, for those who may be interested ) so I guess it is not gray market... I'm trying to find on canon's French site if they are an authorized retailer... maybe a call to canon will solve the mystery.

I've checked for fingerprints and there seems to be none. Also, there is Styrofoam AND bubble wrap around the camera, all the inside components are sealed with tape, and they seem new.

there is also a EWS agreement in the box... so far I'm inclined to think they just mixed-up the manuals somewhere?

I will check the shutter counts and keep you posted.  Thanks again for your replies :)

The seller sells all over the world, and likely mixed up Cameras intended for another country.  Contact them and ask to exchange for a French model.  That way, you will be sure of having a Warranty if it fails.

Carrefour S.A. (French pronunciation: [kaʁfuʁ]) is a French multinational retailer headquartered in Boulogne Billancourt, France, in Greater Paris.[2] It is one of the largest hypermarket chains in the world (with 1,452 hypermarkets at the end of 2011[1]), the fourth largest retail group in the world in terms of revenue (after Wal-Mart, Tesco and Costco), and the third in profit (after Wal-Mart and Tesco[3][4]). Carrefour operates mainly in Europe, Argentina, Brazil, China, Dominican Republic, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, but also has shops in North Africa and other parts of Asia, with most stores being of smaller size than hypermarket or even supermarket. Carrefour means "crossroads" and "public square" in French. Previously the company head office was in Levallois-Perret, also in Greater Paris.[5]

Canon General / Re: seeimpossible.usa.canon.com?

Hrm. Registered today, five posts all in the same thread.

One wonders which one of our long-time posters is the new FakeSteveJobs on this thread  :P

I monitor new signups each day 3-5 times, and look for proxy IP's or other ways of detecting spammers.  Hot topics often result in a host of new members, we need to welcome them and if they post inappropriate or trolling material report it.  We've been banning Spammers and ex-members trying to get in to the tune of 5-10 a day recently.  It will die down once the new announcement fever is over.

Take the time to welcome new members, many are excellent photographers who have just been shy about signing up.

Site Information / Re: How to join the for sale section?
« on: October 01, 2014, 02:54:24 PM »
The beta was scheduled to end in October.  CR Guy is working on revamping the website in a major way, so a decision to go ahead has been delayed until testing can be done on the new site.

Instructions to participate in the test are in site info.  I've purposely restricted membership to those with multiple posts to avoid scammers signing up and ripping off members.

I'll extend the test mode for those who request it.

EOS Bodies / Re: High ISO Samples from the Canon EOS 7D Mark II
« on: September 16, 2014, 05:37:44 PM »
What should I think about the opinion of somebody who posts anonymously as a "guest" here? How's that even possible?

Banned or deleted account I think.

He deleted his own account, I checked the logs.  He had also set up a second account, and deleted that as well.

We have been handing out a few warnings and temporary bans, we typically delete all posts and topics when we delete an account, that's almost always a spammer.

Whenever a new model is announced, its always the same.  People get in arguments and start calling names.

The moderators get tired of issuing warnings and issuing bans.

Its OK if someone believes something different.  Stop criticizing other people's posts, and name calling will get a warning or a ban.

Site Information / Re: Add .cr2 and .dng to permitted file types?
« on: August 31, 2014, 11:57:14 PM »
No.  They tend to be much too large, our servers are not Amazon S3 servers.  A cr2 or dng file requires external software to convert to something viewable.  That means every user would have to download the file in order to see it.  For cr2, the user would have to have software that supports the camera used, and for dng, they would need software that supports dng.

I suggest that you link users to a offsite service like drop box. They can download and then play with the file.

Site Information / Re: NEW ___ Sell Your Gear - Beta Test
« on: August 24, 2014, 12:24:15 PM »
Only a small handful of users have asked to try out the buy and sell forum, at this point, I'm wondering if the effort already expended was time wasted.

I know the board software is rather limited (but much nice to look at than your standard vbb, btw)... but anyway, here's a wish:

I usually use the "Show unread posts since last visit" option to scan for new threads that could benefit from my wisdom and deep photography insight :->. Currently, this is being spammed by "17-40L" and the like threads that are only "for sale" posts very few people will be interested in.

Could you please:
a) add an option not to let this subforum show up on the  "Show unread posts since last visit" list, or ideally let the users select what subforums they're interested in at all
b) if this is not possible: Add a mandatory prefix "For sale" to posts in this subforum so they are recognizable at first sight.
c) remove this subforum, personally I don't really think its necessary esp. since the CR memebers seem the be spread around the globe and I'm unlikely to buy used gear from another country.

Thanks for considering!

I did find a feature called "allow Boards to be Ignored".  I turned it on.  You can now check the boards you wish to ignore in your profile.

From the user manual.

"Ignore Boards Options

If enabled by an administrator, users can choose to ignore any boards on the forum. When a board is ignored, it is still shown on the Board Index, but the New Posts icon will not show up for this board. In addition, new posts will not be shown for an ignored board when using the link Show unread posts since last visit. Neither will they be shown when using the link Unread posts next to the category names in the Board Index. However, when using the link Show new replies to your posts, new posts in an ignored board will still be shown. Also, when entering an ignored board via the Board Index, topics that have new posts will still be indicated with an icon.
"

I may have to turn this off if a lot of people use it and it drags the system down.  The processor might have to check that table every time.  We have a lot of members on the board at one time, and around the time of new model announcements, I've seen several thousand.

I'll try to turn off this feature for new users and only have it active for those with X posts.
