EOS-M / Re: My First EOS-M Review
« on: November 07, 2012, 11:25:20 AM »

Yes, the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM lens is fabulous. Super sharp and good color for the size. I shot this turtle over the weekend at a birthday party.
The video quality is great but the AF Servo during recording sucks just as much as the T4i. I stuck to manual focus.

Some pics and my video test here...

My EF-M to EF adapter should be coming in soon and I will post some more pics.

thanks

EOS-M / Canon EOS M Video Test
« on: November 01, 2012, 11:53:26 PM »

I picked up my new Canon EOS M this week and shot some video and pics to evaluate the image quality. It is almost like a Powershot in a Rebel body. The image quality is great, the new EF-M 22mm f/2 STM lens has dreamy bokeh and the small size makes the EOS M more convenient during travel for my quick positive evaluation. No for the annoying stuff. It is pricey compared to the other mirrorless brands, you have to electronically disable the AF of the EF-M lens to manually focus during video capture and just like the T4i/650D, the Hybrid AF servo still sucks. Oh well, I always focus manually during video.

It seems the Hybrid AF is a nice try by Canon but no cigar. I will stick with manual focus for now. Although, the T4i is an excellent still image DSLR with all the upgrades almost like a Canon 60D in a smaller package.

I talk more about it in my recent photoblog post here...

Thanks.

Sorry for my sloppy copy and paste skills. I just corrected and double checked. It should be good to go now. Thanks for the heads up!

I finally picked up a Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens to test the Hybrid AF system with my Canon EOS Rebel T4i/650D. I think I set my expectations a little to high but the Hybrid AF system was a disappointment. Fortunately, the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens or "shorty forty" is an affordable, portable and extremely sharp lens with great color.

Check out my Hybrid AF test on my Youtube channel here...

EOS Bodies - For Video / Canon Rebel T4i/650D Video Test
« on: June 20, 2012, 01:36:13 AM »

I picked up my Canon Rebel T4i/650D at my local brick and mortar and did a quick video test to evaluate the video quality and the newly fangled touchscreen LCD. I did not have time to try out the new Hybrid AF tracking system because the sun was quickly fading.

The video quality was just as good as the previous T3i. I was hesitant to like the touchscreen at first but it comes handy when choosing and magnifying a focus point quickly. Other than that, the T4i is quite amazing for a Rebel.

You can view my video test on my Youtube channel here...

You can read my brief video evaluation here on my PhotoBlog...

I also created a modified .plist for the Canon E-1 Movie plugin v1.3 for Final Cut Pro for the Canon Rebel T4i/650D. I attached the .plist to this post for closer viewing and the instructions are listed in my photoblog link above.

Enjoy!

Yes, the zoom feature only starts at 3x and the only resolution using this feature is 1080p at 30p or 24p. On top of that, you must hold down the "disp" button at the same time you press the plus or minus index buttons to zoom. Not very practical and requires a use of tripod.

No 640x480?

DuLt,
Unfortunately, the new digital zoom is only in 1080p 30p or 24p mode. I was kind of disappointed that 720p 60fps was not included. Of course, Canon will have that feature in the Rebel T4i exactly one year from now.

pgabor,

I see what you are describing with the 50mm and 100mm comparison in digital zoom to minimize the effects of rolling shutter. I welcome any suggestions to help other people out video advice. Not only do you have manual focusing issues in digital zoom, you actually have to depress two buttons on camera (Disp+ zoom button) at the same time to increase or decrease magnification. Not very practical and almost requires full time use of a tripod.
The digital zoom would be advantageous shooting a NASA Space Shuttle launch 12 miles away or a Moon eclipse with a 400mm with a 1.6x crop at 10x. That would be like 6400mm.

As for your true resolution at 10x, my unscientific opinion says the T3i digital zoom is cropping the 18mp CMOS sensor to get you closer to the subject. A 1080p image is about 2 megapixels, so the camera has much cropping room to allow decent resolution. I am not that technically gifted to figure out all the interpolation and extrapolation going on in the sensor. If somebody out there could educate me or lead me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated.

thanks

EOS Bodies / Canon Rebel T3i Digital Zoom Video Test update...

I just posted another Rebel T3i Video Test using the 3x-10x Digital Zoom at 1080p resolution. It looks great but it tests the quality of your glass, most definitely.

I posted the T3i/600D video test here on Youtube...

I modified the .plist camera file in the Canon E-1 Movie plugin for Final Cut Pro users out there. I posted this screen grab so one can copy and paste the code.

I posted a link in my PhotoBlog post here for my step by step instructions on the discussion forum of DVinfo.net here...
