EOS Bodies / Re: Lower Price Full Frame Camera [CR1]
« on: May 14, 2012, 06:30:06 PM »
Wait! Where will this rank in the 5D line up? I just spent $2,200 on a 5D2, money I don't really have. If this newer but 'cheaper' FF camera out does the 5D2, I think I will cry and then die a little bit inside!!!

Really hope that is not the case.

Anyone care to shed some light on this? Please and thank you.
The only light I can shed is that you should enjoy shooting with the actual, physical camera that actually, physically exists instead of being sad that you may or may not have saved money in the future at some theoretical point that is based solely upon a website called Canon RUMORS.

By your logic, when the 5D Mark IV comes out you should be sad you'll have been shooting for three years because the 5D Mark III is now less expensive than it was.  Just go out and shoot, you got a great deal on the 5D II and it's still a great camera.

"Honey, you know how we've been saving to buy a car?  I got a camera instead!"

$15,000.  And there are a lot of people who are going to buy two.  Wow.

What's a Hasselblad up to these days, maybe I'll get back into film...

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Chuck Westfall & the 5D Mark III

How Chuck Westfall is able to remain employed by Canon will always be a mystery to me.  What complete non-answers.
See, I always figured this is exactly why people like Westfall are employed by places like Canon.  Do you think it's easy to actually sound like you've answered the question but haven't when you actually know the real answer which would just be easier to just say?

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 5D Mark III/X Commercials Being Shot? [CR1]

Can you imagine a commercial (usually a 20-30 sec spot) about shooting landscape or portrait photography?
Yes, but it would have to star Ashton Kutcher.  Christian Bale maybe.

Here's an interesting thought -

what if the 5D3 came out with 21-24mp, 12800 working ISO with H1 & H2 up to 51k - but 9 full cross AF points that were all responsive to f2.8.

Would you all be trading up? Or would you stay with 5D2's?
To be honest, I'd trade up with one point in the center that worked as well as the Nikon system.  I have no problem focusing and recomposing, the problem is getting a decent focus in low-light situations in the first place.  9 points that worked with great ISO like that and equal megapixels would be fantastic as far as I'm concerned.

Unfortunately, whenever the subject moves just a bit, it struggles to readjust focus, which is a big problem when you're  triggering it with PocketWizards since you can't actually look through the viewfinder.
You should look into tethered shooting with a laptop and use Remote Capture (it's on the CD in the box).  For those times you can't look through the finder but still want to see what the camera sees it's a huge help.  You even have control over everything on the camera, from ISO to focus.  There's a little lag because it's using the USB cable connection but you're adding functions and a new USB cable is certainly a whole lot cheaper than PocketWizards.

By your logic the D3s should not even exist then since is no difference from the D700 and the D3s since they have the same MP and same AF system.

I'll make it easy for you Canon:
Break the small form factor full frame prosumer line into 2:
1) Speed Demon (12mp, High ISO, AF, FPS, Sealing, Movie)
2) Megapixel Monster (with current AF, sealing)
Charge $3500 for each then sit back and count all your money

They won't be getting my money:

I want 18-21MP, High ISO and decent AF
Um, actually, it sounds like you'd want Option 1 there.

Hmmm... this seems interesting... but not enough to get me to jump... maybe some used 5fII's will flood the market...
If the autofocus isn't improved and the MP are, you won't be seeing mine on the market.  I have a feeling a lot of people will feel the same way.

I shoot low-light and the AF is the biggest flaw.  I don't want more points, as I can just use the center cross point and recompose I want a *better* point.

After painfully wading thru this, I think I can sum it up for those of you who start at the end:

Anyone who wants more megapixels than "me" is an idiot and doesn't understand picture quality.
Anyone who wants fewer MP than "me" doesn't do real photography.
Ansel Adams still rocks.
Best summary ever.  Especially for a three sentence CR1 rumor.

Seriously people, it's a rumor, not a spec sheet.

So how would this adjustment of color temperature be done?

I can only think of putting 3 flash bulbs in the head, each gelled with one primary color (RGB) and adjust the output of each flash bulb accordingly to give the desired color temperature.

Or could it be LED based instead of flash bulb? (doubtful as I don't think LED's have the light power that a flash bulb does)
I'm thinking LED here actually.  There are mass manufactured LEDs reaching into the 100 lumens per watt range, where fluorescent (currently the best lumens/watt lamp) is.  Add that LEDs are low-voltage already (smaller capacitors), want to be 6000K to start, and are already a directional source (eliminating the reflector entirely) and we're pretty far down the road to what manufacturers would consider a pretty good thing.  Then it just becomes a second "warm white" grouping of LEDs next to the 6000K ones and you're dialing in your color temperature quickly and easily.

so new features would be added to new cameras, encouraging owners to dispose of the old cameras in favour of new ones

That's exactly the case.  It's why the T3i/600D has a user-selectable range for Auto ISO, whereas the 7D and even the 5DII's Auto ISO ranges are fixed.
I would like to meet the kind of person who sells their 5Dii for a 60D just to get user selectable range for their ISO.  I would meet them and become their best friend and buy all their castoff gear when the next thing came out.

I see your point but the auto ISO example is kind of stretching it.  There is no other FF option for people not willing to spend over five grand.

So, should I finally upgrade?  I am running 1. something from over 2 years ago.  Besides 24 frame video, do you gain a lot?
Yes, manual control for audio and video alone is totally worth it!  I always considered 24p a bonus in that release.

EOS Bodies / Re: Make Your 5D Mark II Infrared
« on: November 08, 2011, 02:28:43 PM »
Convert a 5Dii or just buy a film camera and use infrared film and just scan it.

I think at the going rates of film developing I could do about 200 rolls (36 exposures) through the latter and come out even.  Seems a much lower price if you just want to explore IR.  You'd probably relearn a thing or two about shooting in general while you were doing it.

Is anyone else not happy about Canon packing more mega-pixels in?

Low light / high ISO performance is way more important to me than adding (what are in most cases) superfluous pixels.
I'm with you.  I've found that because of space and my personal requirements I mostly shoot at RAWs1.  For more artsy stuff and rare opportunities I'll jump up to the 21mp, but to add another 8mb per shot on hard drives would mean that I'm expanding my 1tb drives even further.  I just don't need them, it seems like marketing going insane (do people still buy one camera over another because of megapixels?)
