Yes, I definitly think so. Beside the IQ of the lens, they also improved quality control and costumer service.

The 35mm F1.4 is really superb (check out the test images over at "the-digital-picture"). I'm not that much impressed with the new 30mm f1.4, we have to wait and see what the 18-35 f1.8 has to offer, but only the fact they offer such a thing is impressive. The 17-70 f2.8-4 is also a nice lens on APS-C, it is optically better than the EF-S 15-85, with a little bit less range but in a smaller, cheaper package.

I'm looking forward to new Sigma lenses in the future. We as costumers can only profit from some competition in the lens market, especially in the APS-C segment.

My next lens will probably be the new Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 IS Macro. I still have an old Sigma 18-125 from when I bought my 350D, but is used very seldom because the lens is not really good. I will upgrade my body this year, and with the body I will also buy a new standard-zoom. The EF-S 15-85 is also nice, but the lower price and weight of the Sigma together with the faster aperture and macro capabilities make it the better choice for a everyday lens.

Also on my list for new lenses are the Sigma 30mm f1.4, as a replacement for the EF 35mm f2. Sigma improved the minimum focusing distance for the 2nd generation, which was a killer to me in the first one.

Then there is also 8-16mm again from Sigma which looks interesting, I just have the feeling that I need something wider than the EF-S 10-22. But I will wait with this one until Sigma rolls out the second generation. There are always some nice improvements, and I think it can't be that long until they upgrade it.

Do we actually care about the 70D? I mean, feature- and capability-wise it has to be better than the 700D, yet be worse than the (rumoured) 7D2; and it will not be full-frame.

I do. I do not need the AF-System of the 7D and that means I also won't need the 7DII. The 6D would be a nice package for my style of photographie, but I do not like to go full frame, because I do not like to spend so much money on equipment (it is not only the camera, but also the lenses, tripod, filters, camera bag...) everythings grows. This is also a point I do not like about going FF, everything is bigger an heavier. Sure the big viewfinder and the IQ is very nice to have. But I think a modern APS-C delivers enough IQ for an advanced amateur.

And here comes the 70D into play. It offers (should offer) a step up from the entry level xxxD. LCD on top for easier handling, more robust body, better IQ (again hopefully after the 60 dissapointment), and some other nice features I like to see (like WiFi or GPS). And all that at a nice price.

Yes, I do care about the 70D a lot.

Finaly we got some news about the long awaited 70D

what good do these news do you if they are all nothing but rumors? last 4-5 "news" were all a complete and utter fail, im actually surprised how people get excited with every new rumor, CR2 or not. if i sneeze in my hand full of paint, most of it will just spray all around, but a few drops will bound to hit the target. this is what CR is.

This makes me wonder; why are you in here then? And why are you wasting your time in a forum that deals with stuff that you actually do not take serious.

Finaly we got some news about the long awaited 70D. Somehow it is silly to talk about what features will be included and what not, because we just can't know; but it is fun anyway.

I personaly belive that it will not have the SL1 sensor in it. Even if Canon was very slow with sensor development recently, and are putting almost 4 year old sensors in new cameras. That works quite well for low end cameras, but I do not think canon will pull this stunt for the 70D. The 60D was already a little dissapointment after the 50D. On the other hand the 70D needs quite some more features than the 700D to justify its price. And then there is Nikon and Sony; Canon needs to catch up.

I think It will be a new sensor, like rumored at the beginning of the year. GPS and WiFi will also be onboard, especially WiFi will become standard on cameras. It would not expect to much from the AF system and the body. These will be points where the 7DII will score, so Canon will hold back on these features. Thats okay with me, just give me a very sensitiv center AF-Point, and plastic for the body is nowadays very good.

Looking forward to the announcment.

It depends...

First you should know your needs, then how much you are willing to spend, then you can decide which camera ist the best for you. Each one has its pros and cons. For the NEX series I think the biggest pro is the size (as long as you do not need long lenses). The biggest con is that a lot of functions are packed in a small body, which means that handling it is a little bit difficult, especially of you need to be fast.

There is no best camera, there are only different cameras for different people with different needs.

You should ask yourself, what are the subjects you like to photograph. From there you can derive the importance of a lens.

When I go out, my lightes kit is the 35mm f2 (on APS-C); If I'm out with the kids, I often take also the 70-200 f4IS with me, and when I know I will be indoors at some interesting place, I also take the EF-S 10-22 with me. Last year we did a 2 week cycling tour with camping; I wanted to go as light as possible, but the 35 would not have been felxible enough, so I brought my old 18-125 Sigma with me (no problem, the lightning was mostly good on the trip, and with good lightning most eqiupment makes good pictures).

So ask yourself what you like to do. My kit on a FF would be the 17-40 for indoors, cities and landscape, then the 70-200 for people and portraits, and finaly I would take a 50mm f1.4 with me. It always comes in handy, sometimes the light is bad, or if you go for a day trip where you like to be espacially light (and it fills the gap between the17-40mm and 70-200mm.

This is mostly specific for OS X.
For picture managment I use Apple Aperture which also can do some simple PP task (actually it can do quite a few, but I don't like the UI that much; but watch out, the next version could be much better)

Then there is Lightzone, this software was abandoned a while ago, but it is becoming an opensource project for OS X, Windows and Lunix (www.lightzoneproject.org). I love the way this program works; it is very easy to handle and gives good results in a short time

And for doing some more work, like merging together different pictures and that stuff that is not "traditional" PP I just bought Pixelmator; not really profesional grade, but it has the feature that I need, and it is rather cheap.

I think unless you really are a pro (which you obviously are not, since then you would be out shooting, instead of posting on the Canonrumors Forum [/kenrockwell]), there are many alternatives to PS which cost much less.

I think this is mainly made-up to cut into the sales of 3rd party lensmakers. It would be possible to make a DSLR body, that only accepts EF lenses. But to do so, there should be something in the lens that lets them identify as an EF lens. I do not think that Canon has anything like this in their older EF-lenses.

So if Canon likes to keep its compatibility to their old lenses, then the Sigma lenses will also keep working on EOS bodies.

It will be interesting to see, if we will get 3rd party lenses for the EOS-M or the Nikon 1, or it Canikon buildt this "feature" into their new mirrorles cameras.

I am new to DSLR's and will be traveling to Europe for a little over a month (leaving June 10th). I am pretty set on the XXD line, but would be interested in other suggestions. I was rather hopeful of the April 23rd announcement date, but now that has come and gone and no 70D. So do you guys 1) think the 70d bill be released before I leave? Or 2) think I should go for the 60D, or another suggestion.

As said before, the 70D won't be out in time.
I suggest you go for the 60D, there are some quite amazing deals out there for this camera. At my local electronics discounter they almost throw it at you, it's so cheap. The 7D is quite a bit bigger and heavier, not something you usually like for travelling, and its a bit more complex to understand and work with. The xxxD series is okay, but it lacks some nice feature (second LCD on top, bigger viewfinder). So the 60D is nice.

Normaly you get a more or less nice lens with the discount 60D package. First choice would be the 15-85, but usually it sells with the 18-135 which is quite okay for travelling, and a step up from the Tamron soupzoom. There is still some money left from you budget, I would suggest you buy a wide angle for that; Canon EF-S 10-22mm or Sigma 8-16mm are good options.

Hey folks,
I'been waiting so long fot the 70d.... now it's again some more weeks away-at least. :-(

Looks like I'm finally going to switch to Nikon after 8 YEARS Canon... and now i'm wondering who else?
Anyone else out there who takes the consequences of the missing features or am i the only one?

Just wondering....

I'm with Canon for some time now; 7 years of them with the my 350D. I'm also waiting for the 70D. An alternative would be the 6D, but it would cost quite some money to upgrade to FF, and I'm not sure if it is worth the investment.
Switching to Nikon is not an option. Not that Nikon is bad, or that I love Canon; it's just a question expense and revenues. It takes quite some time, effort and money to switch a whole system. but I don't see the real return of doing so. Of course, a better camera is nice, but waiting half a year or even a year makes no big difference for me as an amateurphotographer.

I suggest you go out with the eqiupment you have, and take some pictures, try out some new technique, and just wait until the 70D finaly arrives. But if you feel the need to spend some money, or just need a new toy, then buy something Nikon, Canon 6D, or whatever.

I hope the wait is worth it. (No SL1 sensor in the 70D please). But to me, the time doesn't really matter; I'm still using my old 350D, so a few month more or less do not really matter after 7 years.

I think you won't preorder the 7D II; APS-H is dead. It just does't make sense anymore. The prices of FF sensors are coming down, and the sensor represents a much smaller share of the cost of a camera then back in the days when APS-H was an option. Further EF-S lens will not work on an APS-H camera. So if you really like APS-H you most likely need to buy a FF and crop the picture.

The technology is here. And the fact is, that that is the only thing we now.
 
See the sensor in 5D m3 with high ISO performance and good IQ, the 6D with WiFi and GPS, the 7D with fair weather sealing and high fps and several Canon cameras with video technology and the AF tech ass well and so on.

From a Canon board and share holder point of view the most important thing is to get as much money out us as possible. Period!

This means that we will get the new tech in small steps so we will buy a lot of cameras.
ONLY the competition will give us a camera with all known tech in ONE camera.

So pleeeeease Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and all you other great camera manufactors make dam good cameras in a dam  hurry!

Who said it was overdue and/or that they're delaying the 70D?  Internet expectations?  Or Canon?  Perhaps Canon believes they're ahead of schedule.  Because other than some not-so-vague comments from Canon employees who were put on the spot, I don't recall reading/hearing anything about the 70D or the 7D2 especially in regards to an impending announcement or due date.

So again, are these YOUR expectations from reading a RUMORS site, or are these missed deadlines that Canon has self-imposed?  Obviously a rhetorical question...

If you would have takeen yourself more time to read, then you would have probably realized, that I wrote "It looks to me", so it was not even a rethorical question you wrote, it was just not a very intelligent question, because it just showed, that you did not read what I wrote.

When choosing to question someone's intelligence, you should really proofread your own post for misspellings, proper grammar, and proper punctuation to insure you look as intelligent as possible.

Additionally, don't try to hide behind "it looks to me" - you know my comment applied perfectly to you (and many, MANY others on this forum so I'm not just singling you out - I just happened to quote your post) with or without the inclusion of that minimally applicable qualifier.

Finally, you should avoid insults and stick to facts.  However I see from your acceptance of rumors as quasi-facts that this may be difficult for you.

Sorry that english is only a second language to me.

But anyway, I still think you should read the post you are replying to correctly.

And by the way, I did not question your intelligence as such; I just said that this particular question/post was not very intelligent.
