Canon General / Re: Why did you choose Canon?
« on: January 26, 2013, 03:11:17 PM »
i always thought i would be a nikon guy when i "grew up" and got serious about photography

the image i had of nikon can be described with words such as "professional" and top quality and elite and serious

but starting out - my dad had a canon, and i started off in photography as a teenager shooting with his gear (Canon TX - ? if i remember correctly? is that a camera?? he got it in the late-60s when he was overseas - vietnam)

then later when i was in the navy, at the the time it seemed to me canon had the better technology and i liked the design - so i shot with a canon camera back in the mid-90s -- but i wasn't "serious" into photography like i am now

and this latest time around, i was getting into astronomy more seriously and wanted to make the transition to astrophotography, and my circle of friends had very high compliments for canons equipment and their support for astronomy historically - so i got a T2i to start out with

since i had already invested in lenses and other equipment, i just moved up the canon ladder - 7D 5D2 and now 1Dx

but let me tell you - i am VERY happy

because, at first when you don't know  $#!*  about something, you just make the best choice you can - right or wrong, good or bad - in the case of photography, that choice has long-term consequences --- the choice you make first pretty much sets your course going ahead for several years - and the longer you're in to it, the harder it is to cross tracks onto the other team's side

but i'm canon and i couldn't be happier

its funny - when i spoke w/ my dad about this a few months back he said the same thing, he always looked up to nikon, thought he'd get a nikon, but always decided on canon at the critical time

i thought that was funny

((note: i've posted this question over on POTN as well - but i really want to get to the bottom of this issue and there are some smart hombres rummaging around these parts so i'd like to get some coverage of this issue here as well - thx))

perhaps somebody can shed some light on this mystery for me

i use DPP in my workflow - i simply prefer how it processes RAW files - so i put up with the interface

i take a photo - process in DPP - export as TIFF - import into LR - then go crazy with all the edits available (i even have Nik complete collection - LOVE it)

however, i notice an ENORMOUS amount of noise in the image after importing it into LR

and i have some examples...

orig photo (i shoot RAW+JPG - here is the JPG ----- this is looking north toward PETCO park in downtown san diego near the convention center - observing it under/through the sail bridge crossing harbor dr after sunset)

finished processing in DPP (zoomed in to 100%)

opening the TIFF (100% - same basic area)

and then how the same area appears in LR..

link to relevant set in flickr... here

so.. what's going on here guys?

"why" does lightroom seem to be injecting reDONKulous amounts of noise into a nearly pristine image?

i *really* like lightroom - i love the interface and i love the nik plugins - but i CANT have this much noise in every shot i take! i'm not going to be able to use LR for "serious" photography if this is what i've got to deal with

"how" can i configure LR to import my photos without noise??

Technical Support / Re: at what shutter speed you turn IS off?
« on: January 25, 2013, 08:21:03 PM »
i just want to say.. i've been shooting for a while now and i didn't know IS had any effect whatsoever on AF performance

i'm glad i saw this - i'll be sure to switch it off over (mm.. probably) 1/250

@pag.. great shots

the middle one is my fav!

Invent one and wealth will be yours.  For now, sensors only detect luminance (brightness)  Thats why the Bayer type filter is used, it allows a color image to be constructed from a B&W image.

oh.. i didn't know that

that makes sense - thx for that explanation
:)

Macro / Re: Couldn't do this again if I tried
« on: December 25, 2012, 05:41:06 PM »
shot of a lifetime!

grats!

here's a bigger question... WHY even have these "bayer" filters - sensors made of an array that detect single colors that require "interpolation" (and thus a bunch-o-math that eats up cpu processing power)

imagine an array made of sensors that can detect "all" colors

problem solved!

(non-scientist here - but not afraid to ask "why not?!")
