I have been using a panasonic mirrorless for quite some time now (GF1 and now GX1) for when I want to travel with a much lighter and smaller set of kit.  I have been considering moving to the Sony mirrorless (Nex6 or Nex7) due to the better (and built in) EVF but I really like the smaller micro 4/3 lenses.

Waiting to see if Canon will ever really try to compete in the enthusiast mirrorless area but so far it feels like they don't want to really try in this area.

My 100-400 is on my 1D IV about 90 percent of the time, but I also do mostly nature (especially owls) photography.  A 24-70 (Tamron now, used to be canon) stays on my 5D II unless I am doing macro work.

I would probably go for the new canon 600mm f4 II, 200-400 if it ever comes out and as a final fantasy the sigma 200-500 f2.8 if I didn't need to think about money.  In real life I would still like to pick up the canon 500 f4 version 1 .

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon EOS-1D X AF at f/8 with the Kenko 1.4TC

I have been using the kenko 1.4 DGX for quite some time with my 5d Mark II and the 100-400.  At 400 it focuses quite quickly except in the lowest of light (using the centre focus point mostly).  It also metres correctly and shows f8 both on the camera and in the exif.  With the Canon 1.4 I had to tape up some of the connectors and then although it would focus it was very slow and would not correctly show the aperture.

As a side note the kenko is much sharper that the canon (I have the version 2 of the 1.4 canon teleconverter) at least at f8-f11.  I have tried it on an old 500 f4.5 and it also worked like a charm.  These teleconverters do not focus quickly with my 7D (or at all but in the brightest light)

I'm just really hoping that there will finally be a few original 500 f4 going on the used market soon.  They seem to be very hard to find right now...at least here in southern Ontario.

I probably would have seriously considered spending new money on a replacement if it had IS.  The price for the enhancements this one has is just not enough for me (I really like the v1 lens, it was very good quality and I thought a reasonable price).

I will probably be spending my money short term on the new "equivalent" panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 for my GX1.  Hopefully I will be as happy with that as I am with the canon :)

Lenses / Re: Canon 1.4x tele vs 1.4x II tele or Kenko
« on: April 09, 2012, 09:57:10 PM »
I have had the canon 1.4 version II for a year or so and found that (at least on my 100-400) the reduction in sharpness was significant.  I was using it with the leads taped so I was able to get autofocus on my 5dII but it would hunt for focus in low light as expected.  On the 7D it would almost never focus.

I picked up the Kenko DGX 300 1.4 teleconverter a few weeks ago and have found the sharpness to be excellent and autofocus works quite well on my 100-400 with the 5dII.  Again the 7d is not able to focus as quickly or as often with this combination but it does work.

So far I'm very impressed with the quality of the Kenko for the cost.  I have not had any opportunity to compare it to the canon 1.4 vIII or with the sigma 1.4 but it was certainly a good investment for what I am shooting right now.

I probably use my 100-400L lens about 80 percent of the time since I lean towards nature photography.
