yay! finally a real reason to upgrade to 4.

i'm more than happy with my Mark III,  but i have never had a Mark II to compare it to. even if the IQ isn't superior to the Mark II, as other has been saying, there is still lots of other things that are. a good camera is more than just IQ, afterall.

are those links working to rapidshare that i put up?

they work for me, although i haven't actually dld the files.

EOS Bodies / Re: AF might be way better, sensor barely at all
« on: March 22, 2012, 10:56:08 PM »

i've had it for a day and a half now, the VF standard is FAR better than the 5Dmk2 with an EG-S screen in it
its probably not as good as a 1D VF but its not far off, I'm very happy with the VF upgrade even in dim light 3200 ISO+ i found i could MF well using my sigma 85 f1.4 I dont think i would bother with an EG-S screen in this camera even if they were available.

Thanks Wombat! You've made my day!

indeed, mine as well. thanks, wickidwombat.

i already have my Mark III, but i'm swamped with work so it's staying in its box for now...

I'd be surprised if changing a focusing screen would void the warranty.  With my camera, the procedure is listed in the manual. If they didn't want you to do this, why would they be telling you how to do it?

As mentioned above, different screens can affect metering and the manual gives some suggestions on how to work around this.

that is only the case for cameras with interchangeable screens. the 5D Mark III's screen is fixed.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5DIII pre-order thread
« on: March 21, 2012, 02:36:47 AM »
For those not following Canon Rumors on twitter, the Canon Rumors guy tweeted this evening that B&H confirmed to him that they will get their shipment on March 21st and begin shipping pre-orders on March 22nd.

glad to hear that at least someone is sticking to Canon's March 22nd date aside from Canon Australia (from what I hear Canon Australia has been holding stock in Sydney until the 21st for 22nd release).

i have no proof of this, but i imagine Amazon US will do the same (March 22nd shipping).

EOS Bodies / Re: 5DM3: What speed/brand cards?
« on: March 21, 2012, 02:00:57 AM »
bought a Transcend CF UDMA 32GB 400X card and a Transcend USB3.0 Multi Card Reader and they just arrived today. perfect timing. :)

i have been using Transcend SD cards in other cameras and have had no problems with them. as far as i'm concerned, Transcend is a professional grade brand name and i highly recommend them.

well, i got a reply from the Canon Australia rep about whether or not changing the focusing screen will void the manufacturer's warranty. it was the typical answer: maybe, maybe not. it depends on what fails.

boooo. ::)

in other news, i received a call from CameraPro saying that i can come pick up my body on Friday. exciting! :D

What do you mean by manual focusing? as in auto focus during video?

3rd party focusing screens?? Im guessing the answer to this one will be, what was the situation with the 5D2 and 7D? It will probably be the same with this as they are basically a combination of this camera now body wise.

by manual focusing i was talking about the ease of focusing (and judging DOF) using a fast lens with the standard focusing screen. the standard focusing stops accurately showing DOF any wider than f4, so even if you focus accurately on your subject using MF or AF you still won't know how much of your subject is actually in focus.  i agree that the AF is really fast and accurate, but that doesn't help you when you're using a Zeiss prime, for example, or even the 50mm f1.2 if you're using it wide open.

thus why i was wondering about 3rd party screens. if you install a 3rd party matte screen focusing with manual and fast lenses will be a lot easier because DOF will be much easier to see. in addition to what Pyrenees said about metering, the problem with installing a 3rd party screen is potentially voiding your warranty.

EOS Bodies / Re: grip gives fps boost on 5D3 to 6.7-6.9fps????????
« on: March 20, 2012, 04:41:11 AM »
this is news....?? oh. well, had i known that this spec wasn't out i would have confirmed it sooner...

at a Hands-on Prevew event that i attended last week for the 5D Mark III a Canon Australia rep did indeed state that the grip boosts the fps to 6.9. it's a fact, not a rumor. why it isn't in the specs anywhere is beyond me as i am sure the Canon rep knew what he was talking about as he had just returned from 5D Mark III training in Japan.

Software & Accessories / Re: Negative Printer for 35mm film
« on: March 18, 2012, 10:22:41 PM »
i use a Canon Canoscan scanner myself, but i hear good things about Epson as well.

to add on to what the others have said, i recommend using Vuescan scanning software. i don't know if Epson's software that comes with their scanners is better than Canon's, but Vuescan is a godsend.

as a fellow film user i have to say YAY FOR FILM!!! :D

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 5D Mark III in Stock - BestBuy $ B&H???
« on: March 18, 2012, 06:05:14 PM »
I wonder when we will have them in Aus?

end of this week/beginning of next week according to two Canon Australia reps. sounded roughly like CRGuys' March 22nd release date to me.
