EOS Bodies / Re: Shoot JPEG again with 5D3
« on: April 26, 2012, 01:21:06 AM »
With the 5DIII I have been shooting RAW to the CF and Large JPG to the SD, a luxury I really appreciate.  In nearly all of the sports and people captures I have taken, the JPGs look terrific.  So much so that I have ended up spending a bunch of hours in LR 4.1 just trying to get the RAWs to look as good.  Then staring at my computer screen, I am in disbelief that I can't get them to look noticeably better.   I am the first to admit I am low on the LR learning curve having used Aperture for some time and just converting about a month ago.   Frankly, I have begun to wonder if the extra effort on RAW is worthwhile for action shots that mostly end up on website albums, Facebook pages and rarely see large print.  Even a lot of the candid and tight shots of faces look fantastic 1x1 from images that originated as JPG.  There is still plenty of room to push sharpening and noise reduction even in really high ISO images.

For fast moving sports events with lots of high speed bursts, I am seriously considering going with JPG only for in-game shots.  I can use a custom function selection to quickly pop back to CF-RAW/SD-JPG for group photos and unusual situations where I want the security of a good digital negative to fall back on.   I am certainly not in the JPG only camp but there are clearly situations that suit it.

edit - please don't refer to me as thinking I am superior at taking photos than the average enthusiast. I don't believe anything other than I am seriously struggling to bring out the benefit that RAW offers.

I'm all for renaming this to the light leak non-issue and moving on.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5D3 Firmware upgrade, missing step...
« on: April 24, 2012, 01:00:34 AM »
Updated with no issues leaving the CF in camera while loading the update from the SD card.

Other than some uncertanity over the firmware filesize not exactly matching Canons description of the file, updating was a breese.

Getting info warning each time I plug in the 5D mkIII that Canon RAW Codec found a new CR2 file that is not supported by the installed version.  When I click the link to the Canon Server  http://pdisp01.c-wss.com/os/redirect?pr=ic-cc&id=rawcodec it offers no newer versions of my software.  Yes I installed the software that shipped with the camera.

One nice thing about the screen on the new 5D3 vs older versions is that the screen is glass so it is far more resistant to scratching.  It is also permanently bonded to the screen behind it so the flip side to this is that it is not user replaceable like the plastic ones.

I have seen a couple posts that mention there would not be a serious a need to cover/protect the LCD because the glass was replaceable.  And I have seen at least one other mentioning it was not.  Is that confirmed t.linn?

I ask because I have used the glass GGS protectors on other cameras and originally had planned to order one for the mkIII when available.

Even sooner than I expected.  Excellent news on the update.

I love this camera.

EOS Bodies / Re: SD & Flash for 5D3

msdarkroom, what speeds you actually seeing with that UHS-1 SD card?  Quoting from another thread:

Page 32 of the 5D III manual it says:

"Although the camera does not comply with the UHS (Ultra-High Speed) speed class standard, UHS SDHC/SDXC cards can be used."

That other thread discussing flash cards for the mk III is here: http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php/topic,3855.45.html

I am looking for good information on cards as well.  It would be terrific to see a serious review and comparison to learn if you can actually get anything much above 30 or so write speed on the mk III SD slot, and what cards actually deliver it.

Thanks for that option to consider.  Interesting how this plays out if firmware may later add support for USH-1 or if that is a hardware barrier.

I also purchased (got a pretty good deal) on eight SanDisk 8GB Extreme SDHC CLASS 10 (30MB/s), yes eight of them.  I plan primarily plan on using the CF for raw and dropping a L jpeg on the SD, mainly as a poor mans backup.  I figured those would be plenty fast enough to record the jpegs and video too for that matter.  Really, I suppose if all I ever used the SD slot for was jpeg backup, those SanDisk Extreme cards would be plenty fast enough.

The idea of buying that USH card was having very fast write speed to back up my raw from time to time when continuous shooting is likely.

Thanks again Bob and Scrappy

Note that the 95MB/s Extreme Pro SDXC is UHS-1 standard, it's still unknown if 5D3 supports UHS-1, if not, maximum speed will be capped at around 30MB/s

On page 32 of the 5D III manual it says:

"Although the camera does not comply with the UHS (Ultra-High Speed) speed class standard, UHS SDHC/SDXC cards can be used."

I assume this means you can use UHS cards, but they will operate at some lower speed.

I just ordered one of those and it was delivered today.  SanDisk 16GB Extreme PRO SDHC-UHS-1

Now I am reluctant to break the seal and open the package because something ?? half the price may yield the same write result.  Capped at 30 MBS really?  If true, this thing is heading back for refund.

So where are we on the fast SD cards and exactly what product is top dog on the new 5Diii?

Software & Accessories / Re: 5D III LCD Screen Protector - GGS
« on: March 22, 2012, 01:25:53 PM »
THANKS Spokane

I had no idea that outer layer was replaceable so easily.  Having replaced a few iPhone screens, that's a snap.  Really no harder than replacing the GGS cover.  In fact I can see how one might try pulling the GGS and end up pulling off the factory cover along with it.

GREAT SOLUTION - cover it with nothing  :D

Knowing III parts will be slow showing up, I took a look through the Canon site just to see if I could find a 5DII replacement glass but no joy.  Where might one find factory replacement parts such as this?
