I find that the Timbuk2 camera bag inserts work great, if you're going to be picky about not bringing too much gear.

Case in point: I recently took a 7d mk ii to Zion National Park for a week (in a Northface Prophet 52 pack). The Timbuk2 insert had just enough room for the camera, a 16-35 L, and 135 L. Not quite sure the longer white zooms would be able to fit, thought that's my two cents.

You have landscapers moaning about only 20Mpix and the usual DR nonsense.

Then you have videographers banging on about the lack of 4K.

Meanwhile sports / wildlife photographers are quietly pre-ordering. If I was a sports photographer I'd be pretty excited to have the 7D II either as a back up or main camera.
Bingo. From a marketing standpoint, you just accurately summed up the 7D Mk II reception and criticisms into three camps! Makes me wish commenter critique could stratified by subject matter (sports, cinematography, landscapes). Dare I say there would be a more academic-like and jovial discussion to be had?  ::)

As a sports and wildlife hobbyist with a 60D - I'm very excited to get a 7D mark II. The enhanced autofocus, upgraded fps, and noise reduction at higher ISOs will boost my keeper % and maximize the action with me following through the viewfinder. If I was interested in more weddings or landscapes, I would have simply upgraded to a 5D mk III or 6D (for backpacking and traveling).

It looks like 3 new lenses are coming. Surprisingly we will not be seeing the announcement of the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS replacement, unless Canon does a “development” announcement.

EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Pancake
EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM
EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II

I appreciate the rumors and constant updates heading into Photokina, but I am confused by the lack of lens information coming out of Canon's camp. I don't understand why there's fewer, pro-sumer L lenses being released this year. Furthermore, I had hoped Canon's marketing company would launch a refreshed 100-400 L II lens, as a flagship and something to market/pair with their impending 7D II sales.

At this rate, 2014 2015 is looking like the year of the lens (pending developmental announcements).

Guess I'm just overly protective of damaging the front lens element on the 16-35. I'll usually leave mine on.

For fun sometimes I'll use the Big Stopper with a warming filter for interesting effects.

My two cents and congrats on joining the Big Stopper club.

Timbuk2 have some pretty slick bags you can customize and add a camera insert, to boot.

I've purchased smaller a Snoop messenger bag from them as well as a medium messenger bag with an added camera insert. Both hold up, look great, have the ability to strap on a tripod, and don't scream "STEAL ME - I'm a camera bag."

Looks to have the features I want. For that price point, who cares about waiting another five years for a crippled 7dmk2.

Nice features, but I wish someone could find the guy in the Canon board room who keeps recommending they dilute their flagship cameras with unnecessary video features.

To that same board member: Keep the 61 point autofocus and make this camera a wildlife and sports photographer's dream by maxing the sensor. I'd buy three to boost your profits!

Signed a humble guy who's been waiting for three years to upgrade camera bodies, due to lack of sensor innovation.

I own a 16-35 and bout into the Lee starter kit with a Big Stopper... Take off your UV filter and that thing'll make waves take on a whole new meaning, when they're blurred into submission.

I also own several Singh-Ray graduated and reverse grads. Get the stop down rings and the 4x6 filters. It's the best investment I've made in awhile and friends have noticed that my pix have started to "pop."

Only downside... Yeah. The investment aint cheap, but come on. You're not going to handicap your Ferrari with stock tires from Ford, are you? Buy the nice filters... They're worth it.

DSLR development appears to be reaching a plateau, and sales seem to be reflecting this. The 70D is basically a consumerized version of the 7D, similar to how the 6D was a consumerized version of the 5D2. I don’t really think there is as much room for a 7D2, as the 70D is probably good enough to basically replace it. The image quality of the 6D/5D3, and the AF advantages of the 5D3 probably have also sliced off a significant share of potential buyers. There is likely a bean counter somewhere that has figured they would be better selling more 70Ds, 6Ds, and 5D3s than having to produce and market another camera in the current economic climate. By next year these cameras will all be mid-cycle when they can re-evaluate the marketplace and put out a 7D2 to goose sales if it makes sense.
Agree, but speaking as someone who made the mistake of getting a 60D instead of the 7D and now realizing its limitations (AFMA, better focus points, etc) - I will be boycotting these marginal upgrades and hoping others will too, in favor of true market "re-evaluation." I can see the lure of improved videography with the 70D, but there's a notable absence of high end photography features to make me drop more "camera cash."

Canon fooled me once with the 60D and am waiting for the next true sports camera, rather than settling for another marginal 60D upgrade. Lets see a novel APS-C camera with 20+MP, an AF point system on par with the 1D, good iso, and I'd be first in line to buy! That'd be an awesome 7DmkII.

Smart money would be on a new 100-400L. Given the (hopefully) 7d II release timeframe, one would think another pro-caliber sports zoom would be released.

Cause no offense... I'd personally prefer to not having to drop 10-13K on that new 200-400, for my hobby.

A new 50 prime would be exciting, too.

EOS Bodies / Re: POLL: What will be the 70d's price tag?
« on: July 01, 2013, 01:55:26 AM »
I'll go with $1, Bob.

I paid 2499$ for one of my MK3's.  Brand new in box, USA warranty.. All via BigValueInc on evil bay. Just wait until December for the deals.

Just trying to snag a good deal, wondering if history has been any indicator in the past.

what some of the forum posters thought about buying now, after 22nd, or buying in the fall?

Going by recent history and if I recollect correctly, the next set of "deals" are usually due in Christmas ... oh, almost forgot, don't the Americans have something called the Black Friday after the Thanks Giving Day? I've seen some awesome deals during that time ... maybe you can snag a really good deal ... either way you'll have to keep on eye on those sales constantly ... CR is a good place to keep checking for deals, just yesterday one member posted an Adorama deal for EF 28mm f/2.8 IS for US$399 (via eBay) ... but I find it annoying to wait for something I like/want, so I usually buy it the moment I can spare some money and sometimes regret later and sell it off  ... since we don't have the concept of renting camera gear in this country, I look at all my camera gear regrets as rentals  ;D

December/January (for the last couple of years) has proven to be the time of Great Savings. In the shops that usually have the best deals, rebates don't seem to have an effect on pricing. Even now, GetItDigital on ebay are selling the mklll for $2950 (USA warranty). With the end of "wedding season" coming, prices will likely only go down till the end of the year. And who knows, by the end of the year, perhaps people will be pre-ordering their 7D mklls and stealing some of the mklll's thunder :)
Ha. Knew it wasn't all that simple. I guess you're right and ill keep waiting for a couple months longer. My 60D is still decent enough for the amateurish stuff I take... But who knows when that 7D MkII or 3D will get announced, based on today's rumors! (Please say soon! *evil laugh*)

Thanks for all the tips everyone!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Is there a better time to buy a 5D mkIII?
« on: June 17, 2013, 11:50:22 AM »
Hello Canonistas,

I've tracked the 5D mkIII price for a little while and am wondering when I should pull the trigger.

I know Canon's MAP pricing complicates matters, but wonder if the price is going to drop a little bit after the June 22nd rebate period expires. My thought process is: if Canon has $200 off the body and enforces the strict $3299 pricing - is there a chance B&H or the other big companies will be able to push this price lower, after the Canon rebates end? Just trying to snag a good deal, wondering if history has been any indicator in the past.

I'll be upgrading from a 60D, photography is my hobby, and wondered what some of the seasoned forum posters thought about buying now, after 22nd, or buying in the fall?

Happy Monday and thanks for your thoughts!

I like how the 135 f/2 was barely a footnote. This made me sad, though I guess I'm just curious how these scores are compiled regarding the scientific accuracy and methodology... But meh.

I'm still of the camp that your best lens, is also the one capable of taking the most photos for your particular needs.

Don't mean to sound cynical, but this is one lens I'll believe it when I see it. It's approaching Duke Nukem-like rumor status, only to be believed when released. I hope it's sub $3K though when released, as I agree it doesn't make sense why it would cost more out of the gate for something with a similar aperture and focal length?
