I have been using the BlackRapids for about 2 years with my 5D3.
It's great and quick but the main issue i had with it was the strap wasn't adjustable on the fly.
Walking meant it swings about, even when locked. Sitting down or bending down meant the strap sometimes falls from the shoulder (even with the attachment that wraps around the shoulder).
I don't carry a heavy camera/lens combo so i tried the Joby ultrafit and i actually find it much better than the blackrapid.
It's smaller,lighter and adjustable on the fly and does everything a black rapid does…although i don't think it will be comfortable with a heavy combo and it doesn't do dual camera combos..
Just my 2 cents..

I have a a 24-105L a 28mm/1.8 50mm/1.4 and 85mm/1.8
I'm thinking of selling the 24-105, the 28mm and the 85 mm and just buy the 24-702.8II and have the 50 left

I shoot a lot of events and portraits.

I have a 5d Markii

This is exactly what i did and never regretted it…
However, i did keep the 85 but not the canon version, i kept my sigma version because i also do alot of portraits…BUT i must also say…i've not touched the 85 either after i got the 24-70…i thought i needed it but in the end, i realised the 24-70 could do 90% similar..so i didn't bother changing lenses during portrait shoots either.

Well, that depends on what you want to shoot and how much weight are you willing to tug around daily
if you have a 24-70, bring that..i'm pretty sure that can suffice for both landscapes and street…
Tele lenses only IF you really need it..like zooming into big ben or the Eiffel tower etc…if you don't do such shooting then a  tele lens will only be dead weight..
Just ask yourself on a daily basis at home..what do you normally shoot? Because i don't think going on a trip will drastically change the way you shoot
For me, when i went to both Paris and London last time, i only brought my 24-105. i'm going again this august and i'm only going to bring my 24-70…and a 70-300 in the luggage because i'm going to a safari and i will only bring that one when i go there..

How much post processing do you actually do or do you want something just straight out of camera?
Th2 24 prime is going ot be better at 24mm than the zoom that's for sure..
but you can always do some PP on the zoom to get it close.
And yes, the 24-70 is as good as a prime and that's the main reason why i've stopped using the 50 and 85 primes for portraits shoots these days…If i had 2 bodies then yes, i would have the 85 but having to switch lenses while in the field..i find it too troublesome and the 24-70 goes 90% of the 85 at 70mm and it does everything else as good as the 50.
Yes you don't get the bokeh of the wide aperture primes but it's not often i need to shoot at those apertures so the pros outweigh the cons and PP can also get the bokeh like a prime if you do enough

Well, i would love to have:
1) 24-70 II
2) 70-200 F2.8 II
3) 85L

That's only because i do mainly portraits and almost never landscapes…but the 24-70 should really be all i need 90% of the time..that's actually the ONLY lens i bring out these days.

Hi all,

I rented out the 24-70 f2.8II and it was fantastic. I used it to shoot a conference event with down lights and the focus was still great even on a 5D mk II. Some shots were still blurry but I didn't want to push the ISO too high. Although I'm wondering if I should've got the 24-105 is instead, as I was mainly shooting static people...? Anyone got any thoughts.

Just a opinion on a different lens. I also had a 70-200 2.8 IS II and that lens was my savior! I found myself using this more than the 24-70. Has anyone else been in this situation?

i've personally owned both and used both for events before. For generic events like like company functions etc..the 24-105 is fantiastic because of the IS and focal range. What it loses in is the distortion and sharpness and the photos lack the "punch". However, like i mentioned for company events, these points are usually not that important and this lens will work great.

For more important events like weddings, then those points above will be very important. This is where the 24-70 shines. you can shoot the 24-70 at f4 and take the same shot with the 24-105 at exactly the same focal range and you will see a difference in the quality. With the current FF sensors being soo good in high ISO, for important events i will usually use the 24-70 and bump up the ISO if need be..i just trust that lens more thant he 24-105 when it comes to outright quality

Oohh... 5Dmk4? I would like a higher no 5d..the mk3 sometimes just ain't enough

Unfortunately there's no right answer for you.
It will all depend on the location and the event.
How far is the stage, how big is it
How near can you get to the speakers.
Are you allowed to go up on the stage.
are you allowed to go all the way to the front and not block the people who are attending the event.

If you can answer those questions, you will know which is the best lens for you.
In a big ballroom or conference hall where the stage is huge and you are always standing far away, you will need a 70-200.

I believe most event photographers will have a medium zoom and a tele zoom just in case.
Wedding photographers will use the 24-70 because it's sharp

I've used the 24-105 to shoot corporate events before but that's because it's in a small ballroom (think hotel rooms) where i can get pretty near to the speakers. But i also did one in an open area like a stadium and that time, the 24-105 was as good as useless.

Yes, this is true unfortunately..All my 3rd party batteries no longer register with the camera so i won't know how much charge they have left..this really sucks.

I kept mine for a really long time after I bought the 24-70ii thinking I'll use it as a travel lens or when I need the extra range.
Sad to say, I've not touched it since and I recently just sold it away. I never had the use of the extra range and I couldn't bring myself to sacrifice IQ over range. I liked it but also never loved it..the iq and distortion was really bad

I would strongly advise on the 24-70ii over the 24-105.I personally own both and the reason I kept both is I keep telling myself I'm going to bring the 24-105 for travels as a one lens option. However, once I start using the 24-70, I soon found the difference between the 2 is way more than I imagined. Till today, I still own both bit I've not touched my 24-105 since for anything whatsoever.  I don't think I'll ever sacrifice what the 24-70 can give to use the 24-105 again

Any photos to share for comparisons? It's quite hard to "imagine" your issue without an actual photo to see for ourselves.
Is it the lens?
I've not had any issues with my 5D3 but i've also read of others with soft issues getting their cameras replaced with a better copy… to me, i think it's all down to the lens you use and correct AFMA. (I use Reikan for mine)
However, i do agree that when taking the same picture and really zooming in to crop, the 5d3 is no match for the D800 or the Sony A99..as much as possible i try not to crop too much.
I'm using the 24-70II and Sigma 85F1.4 most of the time for all my portrait works and i never had to complain about not sharp images.

I'm not sure if heavy is the cause of my "injury" but i'm sure it played some part since i started photography.
Recently, i've been having severe back pains and finally went to a doctor for an MRU and founf out that i have some disc and nerve damage and i now have to lay off heavy lifting of surgery to fix the problem…
I go out weekly for shoots and i carry everything in a backpack.
Basically my 5D3, couple of lenses, flash, accessories etc..the bag does get pretty heavy and i bring the same gears out every weekend for a couple of hours for shoots. So MAYBE that isn't such a good idea..i've since bought a trolley and put every on it since i can no longer lift the bag without pain…My next worry now is…how am i going to travel and not carry a bag..hmmm..

When Canon makes EF-S mount lenses, they made the mount different so it won't fit on FF.
For third party brands like Sigma/Tamron/Tokina, they don't make different mounts...cost savings. They make the same mount for all their lenses so even though it's EF-S, they all will mount on a FF camera.
When a third party says their lens is EF-S, it just means the coverage area of the lens is for a crop..when used on a FF camera you will get vignetting or even a big black circle around the image.
Even UWA lens like the Tonkia 11-16 fits a FF and works ONLY at 16mm
