Pricewatch Deals / Re: $749 24-105mm f/4L IS USM on eBay (BigValueInc)
« on: November 12, 2012, 12:01:41 AM »
Mine was definitely new. Other than not getting a warranty card I'm very happy. I've done test shots to compare it with my 28-135mm IS and I can already tell this lens is sharper. My 28-135mm was always soft for me so I'm not shocked.

I'm keeping mine. For $750, there is no reason to go buy new from B&H to get a 1 year warranty. I've had 4 Canon lenses, 3 SLRs in my life and I've never had to warranty repair any of them...

Thanks for clarifying - I've never needed warranty service on any of my other lenses so I guess I'm losing a little piece of mind for 1 year.

Pricewatch Deals / $749 24-105mm f/4L IS USM on eBay (BigValueInc)

I'm not sure what happened to the post on the $750 24-105mm L IS USM, but I bought one and it shipped immediately showing up at my door 2 days after. The seller was BigValueInc and there was some debate as to whether the lenses were really new, whether they were a Canon retailer and if the lens was under USA warranty. They are not a Canon Authorized retailer (there's a PDF if you google it and they're not on it).

The box came and it was a white box with no warranty card though the lens appeared brand new. It came with the lens pouch, the front/end caps and lens hood as you would expect. I emailed them and asked about the white box and missing warranty card and they sent me the reply below. I also did go to Canon's website and started a warranty claim and they show it as under warranty (I canceled the claim before submitting final).

This is there explanation...

Thank you for your email. I am very sorry for any confusion this may have caused. This item was removed from a kit box that included the body of the camera. To sell this item at the price we do, we put the lens in a separate box and sold the item. It is brand new and never been used. This item is covered under US warranty and you can register the item by the Serial number. If you would like to return the item, I can set that up for you as well.

Thank you

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Deal: Canon EF 24-105 f/4L IS $749

I have the 28-135mm and have used the 24-105.  Really, not much of a difference especially with my Canon 5D MKII.  Okay, no lens-creep and it's a tougher design.  It can take a decent beating.  But the reach just isn't enough.  It needs at least another 30mm.  I would buy an 'L' version of the 28-135mm if they had it in tougher casing and 'L' glass.

I'm experimenting a bit. I've never owned L glass, just played with it in the store, but my 28-135mm is very soft so I'm hoping to get sharper shots with the 24-105mm. I don't think I really need the reach for what I shoot so not too concerned there unless I move to a FF down the road and lose the crop factor (I have a t3i). I like the extra width with the 24 vs 28mm but it's probably not enough to sell my wide angle.  I would definitely buy a 28-135mm L if it existed - it's a very good range and could be done higher quality. An f/2.8 would be nice too...

EOS Bodies / Re: Comparing 6D with 5D3

The one I'm still trying to compare is the 6D vs the D600 from Nikon... I was pretty much ready to start putting my Canon gear up on eBay and switch to Nikon but now I have to rethink the plan... I still haven't seen any actual reviews/tests of the 6D and considering its release date it may be a while yet... perhaps the Nikon price will go down... I'm not rushing towards either as my T3i is just fine - the lure of FF is tugging at me though...

Any ideas when the prices may come down? Very compelling optics, but you could buy a decent used car for the price...

Lenses / Re: EF-S 18-135mm IS STM vs EF 28-135mm IS

I'll wait and see what the tests on the new lens say, but it seems to make sense to go with the 18-135. Like you said, the 28-135 is just REALLY soft and I can't afford L glass.

I personally don't see FF in my price range anytime soon.

BTW, I'm referring to the new EF-S 18-135mm IS STM Canon just recently announced with the T4i, which as I understand it has new, better optics.

My plan was to sell my 28-135mm and my Tokina 12-24 and just go with the one, 18-135mm instead. I have little need for the 12-18mm range anyway, but 28mm is too much indoors with the crop factor.

You'd keep your 28? What makes you say that - just curious about your thought process.

Lenses / EF-S 18-135mm IS STM vs EF 28-135mm IS
« on: June 13, 2012, 12:25:57 AM »
I use the Canon EF 28-135mm IS for my "everyday" lens and it's been fine for me. However, I see there's a new EF-S 18-135mm which would give me a wider shot and probably reduce my need for the Tokina ultra wide lens I often have to carry around with me. Any thoughts on this new EF-S lens relative to the older 28-135mm - I'm considering making a switch and would appreciate any input.

A lot of places are showing out of stock for any Canon photo paper and most seem out of Photo Paper Pro Platinum (even B&H is out of 13x19... which I need). Seems it's not just a US issue from what I'm seeing on other sites where people are complaining. Does anyone here know what's going on?

The LowePro Slingshots are nice for hiking - very easy access without having to take the pack off.

I use my DSLR for photography, so I have very little need for video features other than the convenience of that option being there. Just my 2 cents, but the only reason I upgraded from a T1i (500D) to a T3i (600D) was the ability to use my Speedlite 430 EX II as a wireless slave. There was very little other than some improvements in video that made the upgrade worth it. Other than that, more megapixels to play with... not much else new IMO.
