EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 1D X Product Advisory

Wow...I just got my 1Dx in May and it meets the criteria to have an issue. I'm not too worried about it just yet.

Custom built rig:

Win 7 64bit
i7-960 running at 4.16Ghz  x4/8HT
24 GB RAM
Samsung 830 256GB SSD
nVidia 460GTX

CS5 runs just fine no issues... LR4 run like a Dog...  I am out of ideas how to speed up LR4 apart from switching off the HT cores.

How are you running LR4 regarding your libraries? I find that I create a Library for each event or job that I do keeps it pretty speedy. When I first started using LR4 I used to keep everything in one library and keyword like crazy but that started to bog the system down. I took some advice from Scott Kelby and started breaking down my Library by event and it sped things up for me.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 2nd Body - your thoughts?
« on: June 13, 2013, 11:10:06 AM »
I would go with another 5D MkIII or an 1Dx. I use the 5D MkIII and 1Dx and the menus are almost identical and the autofocus is the same. The only thing with shooting with the 1Dx it makes me want another one.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D III or 1D IV for sports!
« on: May 23, 2013, 11:07:53 AM »
1D MkIV hands down. I have a 40D, 5DMkIII, and a 1Dx and I find myself using that 1Dx a ton more for sports. I'm definitely going to purchase a 2nd 1Dx towards the end of the year. Don't get me wrong the 5DMkIII is usable but you have to be able to anticipate action really well as the fps is slower than an 1Dx or 1D MkIV.  The autofocus on the 5D MkIII is good as well but the 1Dx just focuses faster.

Lenses / Re: Who do you recommend for Lens Rental?
« on: May 23, 2013, 10:55:38 AM »
I've used www.lensrentals.com and www.borrowlenses.com in the past and both have been excellent. Glad to know about Aperturent as I get down to Atlanta quite a bit. I'll definitely rent from them next time I need something while I'm in town for a few days.

Lenses / Re: Do you wish your 70-200L were black?

Nope. I like it as it is because when you pull that lens out people know you mean business! :D

Ah...the lens I would like to get next or most is the 400mm 2.8L and I've been saving up for it for two years. But since they've announced the 200-400mm I've been thinking of that one instead of the 400mm 2.8L. I am going to use the lens for high school/college football. Other lens I want are:

  • 50mm 1.2
  • 85mm 1.2
  • 300mm 2.8
  • 24-70 2.8 II. This lens will be an upgrade for me since I already have the version 1 of this lens.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon 5D Mk3 Reliability
« on: May 23, 2013, 10:31:20 AM »
I've had my 5DMk3 for over a year now and I've only had two problems. One problem was when I was trying to use a Speedlite 580 extII flash with the camera but found out that wasn't so much of a camera problem. I've since got a 600ex and that problem is gone. The other problem I've had is that the ISO button has gotten stuck in the down position. I can still shoot with the camera and it still performs well. I'm going to send it off to CPS to get fixed but other than those two issues the camera has been top notch. I'd say go for it

Lenses / Re: Who has pre-ordered or will order 200-400
« on: May 16, 2013, 02:36:24 AM »
I would get this lens to just have the ability to move within the 200-400 range without having to change lenses or switch between camera bodies. It's just something less to carry (or more) around at the football games. Just a thought but I'm probably going to stick with the 400mm 2.8 II since I've been saving up towards that goal. I'll try to rent the 200-400 when it becomes available before I make my purchase just to be sure. Or I'll see if I can borrow one from CPS for a test drive.

See now I have a dilemma...I have been saving my money to purchase the 400mm 2.8 for the past couple of years and I'm about $1500 off from paying straight cash for it. I am planning to have it by the time fall rolls around for some high school football action. Now with this lens finally becoming a reality I wonder should I just go ahead go for this or just go ahead and pull the trigger on the 400 since I've been saving for it for so long...

Decisions, decisions...

Nice shots all. I'm really enjoying my 5D MkIII. I've doing some night photos the past couple of weekends and I'm very impressed with the low light performance. My other camera is a 40D and I rarely use it nowadays.

L glass is the truth! Once you start shooting with that it's very hard to go back to anything standard or point and shoot. I have the 70-200 2.8L II, 24-70 2.8L I, 16-35mm 2.8L, and 35mm 1.4L. I love them all!
