I do shoot only in manual mode and in low light situations I bump up the ISO but the exposure automaticaly compensates making it a little underexposed. And to top it all AE lock don't work in manual mode. HOW IS THAT? WHY? [/size]
You completely control the exposure in manual, so you cannot blame your body for the underexposed image.
The exposure compensation--when it indicates "underexposed" while in manual mode--is basically saying, "if I were making the decisions I would change some things..." But in manual you are making ALL the decisions. What would you change given that you are setting aperture, shutter speed, & ISO? Writing code to alter the sensitivity of the sensor?

My first lens above kits was a used EF 28-105 f3.5/4.5 II USM that I bough for around $200 including hood, caps & filter. It has not been on a body in years, not since I got my 24-70 L & my 70-200 2.8 L IS. But I will never sell it because I have sentimental attachment to that glass; it is where I cut my teeth.
I mention this because I think for just starting out you can get some really good--not great--but very good glass for less than $250 (an old EF 28-105 USM or maybe a EF 24-135 IS USM) without breaking the bank & with the option to use them FF if you go that direction someday.

I'll rent it for a test drive for sure.
But it is going to need to pretty damn special to make me sell my 24-70L mk1 (it is a good copy) AND add an extra $1000 to own it. Plus I hate paying sticker price.

I could not be more happy with the IQ of my 70-200 f2.8 IS, especially for the $1400 I paid for it used.
I will admit however that I have kept my head buried in the sand by not renting a mkII for a side by side comparison. L glass envy is a terrible disease indeed.
