Yeah, all fair points Mt S. I'll be shooting on Tuesday so I'll transfer the files with various usb cables, different usb sockets on the pc etc. to see if there is any repeatability. I'll also try the ethernet cable as this could be a preferred method, rather than removing the cards after each shoot.

The usb socket on my 1DX has always felt quite loose, as it did on my old 7D, so I think I'll stop using it whatever I find.

I'll report back during the week.

Still, if anyone else who is getting corruption could try a card reader vs usb we might find out something, even with a tiny sample size.

Hi All,
I've been getting this same corruption on files from my 1DX as well. At first I suspected the CF cards but not any more!
For me, the problem ONLY occurs when I transfer files directly from the 1DX to my PC using the camera's built-in usb socket and the supplied Canon usb cable. I was seeing roughly 10% of my files corrupted. This was such a problem that I would have to record images to both CF cards in order to, hopefully, obtain one uncorrupted copy. This worked but severely reduced the number of available shots as I was using one 8GB and one 16GB cards.

However if I remove the cards and transfer the raw files onto a backup device first (a Nexto extreme, http://www.nextodi.com/product/eXtreme_en.html) I do not get a single corrupted file. NB. I can then use the same usb cable to transfer from the Nexto to my pc, hence ruling out the cable as well.

Could you guys please see if you can confirm this by using a card reader, or backup device, to take your files off the cards instead of the usb socket on the camera??

If we can trace the problem to the usb socket we will have something to go to Canon with.

To those who have updated to 1.1.1, does the camera keep all your custom settings or do you have to change them all back to how you want them after upgrading. (or maybe you did an export/import of your settings first?)

That sounds like you need to add fill flash to get the lighting on your subject to match the bright background. I think the meter could help in that situation. Search for 'fill flash' on you tube :-)

Yeah, I'm curious too...
From what I've picked up, I would spot meter (using the handheld) the brightest area, e.g. white cloud in sky, which gives the exposure for mid-grey, then shift that exposure to the right, e.g. 2 stops, to make it the brightest object without clipping.
As above, it sounds like this could be done via spot metering with the camera, but I'm going to give it a go anyway!

  I'm lovin' the 'clients love light meters' comments. But I'm just an amateur, so no clients. Maybe my girlfriend will be impressed when I take readings under her chin!

I have a 1DX so, yeah, it has built-in metering. I just want to make the most of the locations I find myself in.

I've ordered the L-758DR today so I'll be taking it to South Africa next week. Hopefully I'll have time to learn how to use it first!

I'll try to do some camera-metered vs Sekonic-metered comparison images while I'm there.

I'd be interested to hear your opinions on whether you think a light meter is a worthwhile accessory for landscape photography, particularly one measuring reflected (or spot) metering.

I was thinking of purchasing the Sekonic L-758DR. The video below makes what seems a good case for it's use, but then it would as it's produced for/by Sekonic. It's one of many videos from Sekonic.

Just to pre-empt the obvious question (that I also had) "why don't you simply use the camera's spot meter?", one answer appears to be that you can use the meter to take multiple spot readings and the Sekonic will average them out for you.
It also allows you to 'profile' your DSLR's sensor so you know it's dynamic range and will show the exposure range with reference to your camera's capabilities.

Yes, one battery is included. No, your 7D batteries are not compatible.

I've just spoken to Jessops. They say I'm 1st on the Birmingham store list and they are expecting a delivery on the 23rd July, so I'm hopeful for next week
Is seven months of waiting coming to an end?? I hope so!

I also have a 1DX pre-ordered with Jessops in the UK. Have any of you other UK guys had updates on availability - at Jessops or other UK dealers??

I gave up phoning Jessops every few days because they just don't have any information for me. Did Canon underestimate the demand for this body so badly??

I dont think they are using the mkiii to test the firmware of the 1dx.  However, i will go out on a limb here and wonder if the 1dc is at fault here!  They are essencially the same camera and this is probably causing production challenge to make sure everything is ok for both model since they will be built on the same production line (my hypothesis)...

Just a thought...

Yeah, that's a good point. Adding complexity (in this case, asking the same body to do two different jobs) usually slows down development. Coming from a software development background, I see this all too often.

I'd really like the 1D X to ship next month as I paid in full (via interest free finance) back in January, looking forward to the original March release.
I've already missed having it on a trip to Paris where I REALLY could have used the low light capabilities of the 1D X over my 7D. Those spectacular buildings are really dark inside.

Does anyone else think that the 5DIII is being used as a test bed for the 1D X? The 5DIII is already up to firmware 1.1.2 fixing 'snags' that aren't show-stoppers.

I would have so much preferred to have the camera to use even if it required firmware updates. I'd even accept returning it for hardware updates if I could only get my hands on it to use now!

If they are busy enabling AF at F8 (likely?) and squeezing GPS into the body (v unlikely, but v desirable to me, what with LR4) then maybe I'll be more forgiving of the multiple delays.

I guess Canon just won't risk faults on their flagship product, but really, there comes a time where the flack for snags is outweighed by flack for delays. Release it already!!
