Thanks everyone.  all great tips and suggestios.  I may be able to swing both an extra 600 flash and st-e3.  we shall see.  maybe I will put my 70-300 non l on ebay to help fund this. 

So am I correct in interpreting that the lack of AF assist on the st-e3 isn't that big of a problem? Nobody mentioned it and I have no plans for cave photography...

Great pic neuro.  What did you use to get the background that smooth and jet black?  My wife has tons of similar blanket props off Etsy.  I am shooting my 2 week old goddaughter next week.

I didn't know the 90ex could act as a master and trigger 430 ex ii's....wish I would have known that before I put my 430 ex ii on ebay!

Hello,

I have had the 5d3 for about 6 months and love it.  I just recently upgraded to the 600 flash, mainly to have more flash coverage when using my 17-40l lens (because the 600 flash goes down to 20mm, the 430 ex ii only went down to 24mm.)

When I had my 60d I loved the wireless flash transmitter that was built in.  I used it all the time with my 430 ex ii mounted with an umbrella diffuser.

So now I would like to wirelessly mount my 600 off camera and use it with my 5d3.  I am torn between getting an extra 600 flash to act as the master and have the second 600 off camera or if I should just get the st-e3 and use that to trigger my existing  600. 

I hear that the st-e3 does not have af assist and that may be a factor in low light situations.  I would mainly be using these for baby and toddler pictures in door so it won't be dark - but it also won't have lots of daylight either --- thus the need for flash!

Any suggestions?  Sorry if this issue has been explored before...

having the rebates only run for 2 weeks is sort of odd for canon?  arent these rebates usually for a month+?
so we can expect the 70d on april 28th?!?!?!?!?!

$499 for the 600 flash and $869 for the 100m l macro are darn good prices!

I have a Pelican 1560 when my camera is being stored (not used in 3 or 4 days).  Then I have a Tamrac 606 and Tamrac Adventure 7, both of which I have outgrown and need to replace.  the adventure 7 is on ebay as we speak!    Does anyone have experience with the Tamrac Aero 85?  I've been searching for an everyday  back pack that I can take my 5d3 and 17-40l, 24-105l and 100-400l in and think that the Aero 85 may be a good choice.   

And then

I aslo need a backapack similar in size to the Aero 85,  I'd contemplate remvoing all padded dividers and putting a small pelican case and beta shells in it for when I go mountain biking.  I like the crush-proofness of the pelican cases.  if they can be thrown out of helicopters they can probably withstand a mountain bike fall.  Although if I land on the case that may not be fun!  What does everyone think of the Beta shells?

Ugh.  I'm jealous.  Bh and adorama had 70-300l on sale for $1099 a few days ago.  Sale only lasted several hours before they want back up to 1250 / 1300

Havent seen much news on the 70d so glad to see this - and glad to see the pictured  70d has the flip screen!  wonder how many af points the 70d would have?   hopefully not 9.  11? 19? 


I'll put my 60d on ebay once this is cr2.

Very nice pictures! Was a flash used?  Just wondering how you achieved good lighting from front with lights behind them.   Was the room otherwise dark?

Great pictures everyone!  Great contrast in the salt and pepper in the hair. 

Here are my 2 favorites, both taken of my daughter in 2011 with a t2i.  My wife and I debate which one is our favorite so neutral opinions would be appreciated!  As a proud father (and amateur photographer) I like the bow one because of the "serious" look and bokeh.  I have a 20"x30" canvas print of this and the resolution turned out great.  Can't believe a $90 lens gave that bokeh.

Particulars of the bow picture:
Canon 50mm - f1.8 lens.  1/125th @ F2.5.  ISO200.  No flash.
pillow and blanket under her

Particulars of the Baptism photo:
Canon 18-55 - f3.5-f5.6 lens.  1/80th @ f5.  I believe ISO400.  Not sure if popup flash was used.
Mom off to the side making faces and standing by to grab her if she tipped over!

Thanks, the article and post clears it up.

So in theory - and despite me never having a problem with IS switched on when my 100-400 is on a monopod - I should switch the IS off when the 100-400 is mounted because the IS in this lens (an older model) does not sense when it is tripod/monopod mounted.

and the 70-300 l doesnt require IS to be switched off if mounted on a tripod because it auto-detects it.....

Right?

For those with the 70-300l IS, is the tripod colar for $169 worth it/needed?

Was going to get the 17-40mm for $699 at BH for myself for Xmas but am stumped now that Adorama has the 70-300l is for $1099.  I could probably get $350 for my non-l 70-300is on ebay so the lenses would in essence cost the same amount.

what does that mean?  it auto detects when the 70-300l is on a monopod.  I use my 100-400 on a monopod and keep the IS on all the time?  does this have anything to do with the 70-300 not having a tripod collar?  sorry if this has been discussed before, I haven't had time to look at past postings about this lens and have to order by Jan 5.

I inquired at a local camera store how much they were giving to 60ds being traded in: $399.  Going from $899 in fall to the $699 deal really killed resale value!  Oh well, here's hoping to 7d2 announcement in jan or feb

5d3 kit with 24-105mm is now $3499 at B+H...

5d2 for $1599 is tempting but I;ll also wait on the 6d or 5d3.  I tested the 6d with a 24-105 at a local camera store last week and was impressed with it.  I think my wife would use a 6d alot more often due to the wifi and her not having to deal with the "hassle" of manually transitioning sd cards to her laptop.
