Would like to see an f/4 version of this lens to make it equivalent to the 24-105.  5.6 at the long end can be a bit slow.

Canon General / Re: Taking DSLRs into olympic venues

I took my 550D and 70-300 non-L into Wembley Arena for the badminton with no problems.  Not sure about the stadium.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Get the 60d or wait for the 70d?
« on: June 29, 2012, 06:06:28 AM »
Read the papers again - the 60d has 1/250s x-sync, 1/8000 shutter, faster fps and a deeper buffer for continuous shooting. For me, I'd never want a camera body without a back wheel or top lcd - but ymmv if you don't switch settings often and are a "p" guy.

True, but it all depends if you want/need those features for your style of shooting.  I guess that you do.
The FPS is pretty much the same (5 v 5.3).  The bigger buffer would be nice, but it means carting around a bigger and heavier camera.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: T4i Touch Screen Review
« on: June 29, 2012, 05:51:26 AM »
1 question that worrys me with the touch screen is the nose interface
more specifically the nose on my face interfaceing with the screen

This was the first question I thought of where hearing about the touch screen.  I know if can be turned off to use the manual controls only, but not sure how easy/quickly/simply that can be done.  Waiting on some good reviews...

Street & City / London and India candid street shots
« on: June 27, 2012, 05:46:51 AM »
This is my ongoing gallery of street shots, mainly from London:
http://likebreathing.com/street/

Street is rapidly becoming one of my favourite subjects which is why I took loads whilst in India:
http://observingindia.com/

Most shots were taken with a 550D and Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.

I love capturing those accidental moments where nothing is forced.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: T4i/650D DigitalRev review.
« on: June 27, 2012, 05:34:37 AM »
the key in that review was the high iso was smudgy which indicates the same new jpg engine with over the top noise reduction, its going to be interesting to see what raw files deliver

^This^.  I'm more interested to see high ISO RAW output compared to 550D/600D.  This could be the selling point for me.  Just waiting for some reviews...

Only 18MP, just buy a 550D instead.  ;D

And here's a quick user review of 650D vs. 550D: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1031&thread=41872106

Thanks for the link, some interesting comments here:

"For me, as I process RAW, the image quality remains the same across the 550D, 600D, 60D, 650D, (I feel that these four are better image quality wise than the 7D)"

"Out of the 550D, 600D, 60D and 650D - the new hybrid AF makes the 650D my choice. I prefer it over the 60D which apart from a slightly higher frame rate/burst has little else going for it"

Personally unless you are going to get a cheap price on a used 60D I thik you would be better off going with the new T4i or wait since the 60D doesnt have AFMA hopefully they will put that back with the 70D

Agreed.  On paper the T4i/650D looks pretty much the same camera as the 60D with a few improved bits and maybe a better price.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: upgrade to a 7D?
« on: June 26, 2012, 10:57:42 AM »
For sports, the 7D is the way to go...

Agree with this, especially if you're after FPS.

However, for better low light (high ISO) performance a 5D2 would be better, but you don't get the FPS.  Depends on your priorities.  Decisions, decisions!  ;)

Lenses / Re: Moving to India
« on: June 25, 2012, 12:11:08 PM »
I havent been to india (I would love to go though :) ) however I spend alot of time in china
and the 2 countries have similar population densities. In china I quite often found even 50mm on full frame too long. the 16-35 f2.8L II is my most used lens in these crowded places. With heavily crowded areas there simply isnt the working room to bring a 70-200 to bear.

Too true!  My walkaround lens was a Sigma 17-70 - mainly set to 17.

If cost is an issue go for the 70-300 IS USM non-L.  However, if you can afford it and don't mind the size and weight then the 70-200 is a given, especially if IQ is a concern.

I went to India a few months ago and loved it!
