EOS Bodies / Re: Plan B
« on: August 14, 2014, 11:54:51 AM »
I want to see what Canon is going to do with their sensors.  If there is no path forward I will probably begin to move slowly in a different direction. I will continue to shoot with my 5DIII, lenses and flash but I will not invest any more in Canon gear.  Early next yer I will buy my first mirroless camera and begin to grow into that universe.  I do a lot of photowalks, street shooting and walk around stuff so getting lighter is something to look forward to.  The Sony A7R is nice, but the I'm really torn between the next offerings from Fuji or maybe the Olympus OMD-E1.  I generally shoot between 24 and 20mm full frame so it will be really nice to buy some excellet , fast prime lenses that don't have a comma in the price tag

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon Doing Market Research on Medium Format?
« on: August 06, 2014, 10:09:55 AM »
IT'S THE SENSORS STUPID!!!!! THE PEOPLE WANT A SENSOR LIKE NIKON HAS IN THE 810!  GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT AND THEY WILL NOT ASK ABOUT MEDIUM FORMAT!  IT'S THE SENSOR STUPID!  YOU ARE YEARS BEHIND!

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon to Make a Big Splash at Photokina? [CR2]

The single most interesting thing is going to be the sensor in the new camera.  I want to know if Canon is going to compete with Sony or keep putting lipstick on  their current sensor technology.  This will help me decide where my  future camera dollars are going to be spent.

Check out Beach Camera in NJ.  Got my 5DIII from them.  no complaints

EOS Bodies / Re: High Megapixel EOS on the Way as Mentioned by Canon

no news here: "we look forward to the advent of high-resolution model of the EOS".  We are all looking forward to that.  This poor guy works for Canon and he is looking forward to the same thing we are.  I'm looking forward to Christmas too.  The only difference is I know Christmas is coming.....this year.

Software & Accessories / Re: Tripod legs locking mechanism
« on: July 21, 2014, 04:51:07 PM »
Flip.  For the simple reason I can SEE when the legs are locked.  With a twist lock it looks the same whether the legs are locked or not.  Who wants to wait until the camera tips over before figuring out one of the legs was not fully locked

EOS Bodies / Re: 5DIII CF vs SD slot performance?
« on: July 11, 2014, 08:54:36 AM »
actively using an SD card will significantly slow down the 5DIII when the buffer is full.  If you don't shoot very fast, no problem. If you do, consider using just a CF card.  It's not just sports.  I was shooting dancers recently and had the camera writing to both cards and I missed shots because of the SD card.  What I do now is keep the SD card in, but set the camera to only write to it once the CF card is full.  You have a great camera there.  Treat yourself to the fastest CD card available. Depends on what you shoot but an ultra fast 16GB cards will easily cover a whole day of shooting. Buy 2 and keep one as a spare.  you can always buy bigger cards but I prefer many smaller ones (not that 16 GB is small) to one really big one.  Buy a 32 GB SD card (they are cheap) and put it in and set the camera to switch to the 2nd card only when the first card is full

hard to imagine what significant improvements would make this systems even a tiny bit obsolete.  I've never had a misfire, great recycle times, 40 full power flashes before you get a heat warning and a high guide number.  I think they are on sale or rebate now.  Stock up!

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Another Mirrorless that Won't Sell
« on: June 23, 2014, 03:17:38 PM »
My comment had nothing to do with the camera performance, just with the fact that mirrorless cameras are not selling in the USA or Europe.

I know they are not selling in big numbers but I think they are starting to catch on with the pro and advanced amateur crowd.  I go on a lot of photowalks in NYC that are pretty much that demographic.  A couple of years ago it was 50% Nikon and 50% Canon.  Now at least 10% is mirrorless, perhaps more.  The Sony A7R is the most common and I am seeing more and more Fuji's.  I suspect Sony may have sold as many A&'s as Canon has sold 5DIII's in the past 6 months or at least close to as many.  I still think Nikon and Canon can not ignore this space

Is anybody using DDP as their primary image adjustment tool?   How does it compare to Lightroom?
thanks

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Mea Culpa! - The World Cup in Brazil

Pity about Fred's cheating and Neymar dirty play though.
Indeed!
Wonder just how many togs were at that game, the entire pitch seemed to be surrounded by them. How do they all earn a living with such saturation?
Well, it's the FIFA World Cup...   Rather, how do they not intertwist and tangle with each other, clumped and compressed as they are in such a tiny space! Looking at them it seems impossible not to bump and push others as they follow the action.

funny thing, everyone in the box seemed to be shooting the same focal length, all fixed that I saw.  I suppose there are accepted norms for shooting football and everybody follows them.  I think 1/3 uf the way up the field with a 100-400 would be great but I don't recall seeing too many zooms.  I'll have to sit in front of hte TV the rest of the day and see if I can figure this out :-)

Seemed to be about 70% Canon stuff, maybe more.  Looked like many, many 1DX's with 500 or 300mm L.  I could not be sure but I think they were 500's  I would think it would be hard to track with something that long.  I did see a couple of Canons with black tape both 7D and 1DX style but that doesn't mean much.  I supose if I recorded the game and did a frame by frame look I could do better.  BTW, I saw a t least 1 Sony and 1 Fuji

I think if you keep your eyes peeled you might actually catch a glimpse of any new Canon stuff during the world cup.  I'm sure you will not be able to tell much by what the camera looks like but I suspect that the new 7D will be there along with a high mega-pixel pro body.

Lenses / Re: Tamron 90 macro or Canon 100 for portraits?

Here is a portrait I took with a 100mm 2.8L Macro

I can't help but notice recent discounts on the 1DX.  Canon might give their current 5DIII sensor one last squeeze and put out a 24MP Pro camera with some additional features.
