You could also get a long sync cord (see, e.g., http://ocfgear.com/) which would let you use the 600 off camera and still trigger the 430 optically as a slave in ETTL or Manual, I think. The 10m cord is $65 and the 5m cord is $48.

I haven't shot soccer, but I do shoot lacrosse which is played on a similar sized field. If you're shooting from the sidelines, you may find that the 400 is too much lens, unless you just like to get head and shoulder shots. From the end line, 400 would be good for the far end of the field, but would be useless when the action comes down to your end. It helps to have two bodies, one with the 300 and the other with the 70-200 f2.8. I keep the 300 on a monopod, and just hold it in the crook of my left arm when the action gets close and I need to use the 70-200. Works well with the OpTech double strap and the Spider Holster kit.

And by the way. I doubt you will have success mounting the MT-24EX on the 100L IS. I had that flash, the MP-E65 and I own the 100L IS. It would not fit but I never tried getting an adaptor and I'm not sure you can.

I graduated from Yale University (their sports teams are known as the Elis after the founder, Elihu Yale) in 1972 where I first got an interest in photography. No avatar because I'm usually the one behind the camera!

Mine went in two weeks ago because of an Error 30 issue. They replaced the shutter, but they didn't upgrade the firmware - it's still 1.1.1.

I've used the ST-E3 to trigger multiple 600RTs, and in normal room light with the 1Dx I've had no trouble focusing. My guess is that unless you are shooting in a really dimly-lighted room or you need a third flash you will be happy with the ST-E3. It's also much lighter than a flash when it's in the hot shoe and balances with the camera much better. They also improved on the ST-E2 because it uses 2AA batteries instead of a 2CR5 which was sometimes harder to find.

I got one of those Brother label makers that prints black on white tape (more elegant than brad-man's solution, but also more expensive!). I also have a Word list of my lenses and put the lens hood number in parentheses beside each lens in case I forget.
