EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: World's First EOS-1D C Motion Image Shoot

It is a full frame sensor.  It shoots video as an APS-H crop, or even an APS-C though.

What is not important here is what this camera can or cannot do.  What is important is the shift in direction and marketing that this camera brings.  It is true that a camera that can take continuous footage at a decent resolution will change a lot of the photo industry.  Canon sees this, and that is where they are heading.  If I were younger and had a desire to move into a cutting edge industry, I would probably mortgage the house and buy two of these things with a heck of a lot of memory cards.  I would start marketing myself in a way that differentiated myself from my competition, and as technology catches up, I would employ that too.  With an existing client base and experience at this craft, you would be at the forefront ready to handle raw video 5K, or whatever is next.  Who knows, the future hardware could shoot 5K at 24FPS and then when you press the stills button you get a temporary bump to 60 FPS with multi-exposure blur to still have smooth video and still be able to use a high shutter speed for great stills.  Its possible.  Some company will figure this out, and things will change.

Exciting stuff.  Too bad I am old, tired, and in a different industry.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 5D Mark III Blinking Red AF Point Information
« on: November 15, 2012, 09:06:32 PM »
So would you want multiple points flashing constantly?  If you are using multiple points to track the subject, I would think you would have a pretty bright VF.  Would you have been able to effectively see the subject at that point.  Cool photos by the way.  They really look bad in the thumbnail scale, but when you go into them, you can really see some decent detail there, and the shallow depth of field is nice.

I usually use AI Servoe with one point and I keep that point on my subject.  Center point is easiest, but I will use others, I just need to remember where they are.

Another workaround other than pushing the AF selector button is to change your orientation from Portrait to Landscape or vice versa.  The indicator of how your af point is selected will show up.  this might be tied into having a separate vertical point from a horizontal point.  It works for me though.  It is brief, but it helps.  Especially if you had gloves on or something and could hit buttons other than the shutter button.  It could happen.

I don't get this whole problem.  How hard is it to move your thumb one centimeter and touch the focus selection button?  It lights up and you can see what is selected.  If you need confirmation of AF, then use one shot. I have a 7D and it isn't significantly different in practice than my 5DMKIII.  If you are in that low of light, I would use center focus anyway and not be using AIServo.  5D is really a great camera as witnessed by this nitpicking.

Lenses / Re: Should I sell my 70-200L vii for the 85mm 1.2?
« on: October 19, 2012, 02:27:51 PM »
I love the 85mm 1.2L  It has magical properties.  It is slow to focus though.  I would wager that if you are shooting portraits and you have a large enough space, you can get better photos with the 70-200L.  That is if you want shallow depth of field.  I think you can use 200MM and F2.8 and get a shallower depth of field than 85mm at 1.2.  Of course it depends on how you frame it, and what distance you want from your subject.  The versatility is there with the Zoom.  I would say focus speed and sharpness are on the side of the zoom. I think at 1.2 the soft edges add to the look and feel though.  Both are heavy.  If the 70-200 isn't on your camera due to weight, then I would say look at the 135L as previously mentioned.  I love that lens, and if you have the room to shoot it, it has a similar look to the 70-200L, just at 135MM, you can get better bokeh and it is F2.0.  Which does help at plays, music performances, etc...  Well, just my two cents.  Good luck, I wish I was in your predicament.

Lenses / Re: New Canon 50mm Coming? [CR1]

I would love to see an $800 50mm 1.4L  I would expect it would be sharper, higher contrast and no flare or ghosting at 1.4.  I love the current 1.4, but wide open it's hit or miss when it comes to quality.  I do love the 50 1.2L, but it is very expensive.  I just end up renting it.  This new one I would actually buy.  If it had IS also, consider it sold.

Great!?! ...  I just went out and bought a Zoom for audio recording, because the 7D couldn't set the levels.  Looks like I didn't need to do that now.  I was really hoping for them to unlock the native 1080P  where it is effectively zoomed in.  One of the other bodies has that, and I think it would be very cool to gain a lot of focal length(not really focal length)  for free.

What good is this?  You can take photos for upcoming events, but you can't post them anywhere?  What if by some wild chance someone actually took a good photo?  Then what would you do?

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D Mark III Full Spec List?

What is Silent and low vibration modes?  My guess is, it is related to the shutter, and the mirror being locked up.  Maybe they have a silent electronic shutter option now.  Or, it could be how IS and AF operate while in video mode.  That would be pretty cool to have these act less violently when you are taking video.

This is a truly sound offering from Canon.  It will be everything that a lot of us need.  With an AF that is better than the 7D, and a sensor better than the 5DMKII and 6FPS, where is the weak point?  MegaPixels?  22 will be enough for me.  I'm giddy.  It is not super flashy, but I guarantee this will be a work horse camera for another 3-5 years.

So, if the new 5D is able to make coffee, does that mean it is dishwasher safe?  Did they finally make it weather resistant?  It has the side benefit of more easily getting past our wives as a coffee maker than another darn camera.

 Can't wait.

I'm not sure what I was talking about with pending lawsuits and all that.  No way could you get in trouble for this kind of thing.  In fact I want to encourage everyone under NDA to break their silence.

...Hey a crack heads got to do what a crack head's got to do...  Now give me some more photos and specs.

All it takes though is for Canon to look up the OP and then send a "See you in court" letter.  Now you have to go out and get a lawyer, to fight this.  If Canon thinks they can prove that they were going to spend 20 Million on a worldwide marketing campaign to announce this camera, and it was disrupted significantly, or it made them look bad in the market place, don't you think they could go after some kind of damages? All I know is it would be a pain, win or lose.  People come to Craig with "info" and he publishes it.  It is different if you go and steal that info, and publish it.  I agree with the fact that they get a lot of Publicity and they should in fact feel honored that we all care so much.  My vote would be for them not to worry about it. I am a live and let live kind of guy.  But, there will be fewer undercover cameras going to Dubai next time.

I would think that the power of a pending lawsuit is enough to quiet anyone up.  I would be too scared to divulge open information like that.  If I were his friend, I would be furious.  I loved seeing the pics though. Thank you!  I hope that your user id wasn't your real name, and that the discussion of your location was really just a cover up.  It is interesting that the left side of the camera was never shown.  Could it have something there that even you didn't want to give away?  Also there were no mention of any specs.  Just photos?  Maybe this was an inside job?  I hope so.  Thanks for the info and good luck!

The blue is probably one of those thin films like you have on a cell phone to keep the shiny parts shiny while it is all boxed up.  Could be a reflection, I bet it just should have been pulled off.
