Pricewatch Deals / Re: February 2015 rebates
« on: February 27, 2015, 04:56:43 PM »
It is possible that they will be extended again but they have already been going for an unusually long time so you never know.  If there are extended rebates they probably will not be any better than what is available today so I would just pull the trigger.  Once you get your hands on that full frame sensored camera you will never look back.

For what it is worth, I purchased my EOS-M through Bigvalueinc and was very happy with the transaction.  I would use them again.

EOS-M / Re: Official: Canon EOS M3 and It's Not Coming To North America
« on: February 05, 2015, 11:42:49 PM »
So, I wonder what in the world Canon is thinking?  Not coming to North America?
That was such a plus to Canon's bottom line when the M2 didn't come.  Sounds like a plan.  Keep it out of the hands of the folks with the most disposable cash.  Guess I'll have to buy mine in the UK and have it shipped here.
Idiots.
frank

If canon is basically giving us the finger why go to that trouble to give them money?  Sony and many others have agreed to support the US.  I am too invested in canon's DSLR's to switch right now but I have no issues looking elsewhere for my mirrorless needs

EOS-M / Re: Canon EOS M3 Specifications

I just don't get it.  Why would canon spend the $$ to develop DPAF and not use it in their mirrorless camera?  The old M has hybrid AF and it sucks even after the firmware upgrade, given the amount of effort canon has put into this system (or lack of) I do not expect the M3 to be much better.  I was waiting for this announcement for a while now but I am going to look elsewhere.  I really tried to stay loyal to Canon.........

I am not expecting any better Hi-ISO or IQ than the 70D since it has the same pixel size.  I will keep my 5d3 for now.

EOS Bodies / Re: Images for EOS Rebel 750D & EOS 760D Appear
« on: February 04, 2015, 05:10:09 PM »
This seems very confusing.

Is Canon effectively saying they don't know how to best meet the market requirements in this segment?

Is the LCD version going to be $100 more expensive than the non ... or?

Maybe 760 doesn't have touch screen?

What's Canon doing here?

Are we looking at the new 80D?  Maybe canon will have XXXD and Xd lines only?

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Samyang/Rokinon Tease 135mm Lens
« on: December 24, 2014, 11:09:21 AM »
Unless it has IS, how is this a tease to Canon users?  Maybe if it is as good with AF for $400, otherwise suck it up and get the 135L.

Yeah Samyang lenses are not what they used to be.   They made their mark with the 14mm f.8 which was great quality for 1/5 the cost of the canon counterpart.  For that much money off the competition people were happy to deal with no electronics.  Their latest lens their fisheye is $500 which is just $100 less than the very good sigma full frame fisheye yet the samyang still has no auto focus and no auto aperture, no exif reporting, and (according to the sample pictures on their web site) soft corners.   Why would anyone bother?  If they make a 135mm and price it over $300 I think they will have a dud.

Still waiting for the most important spec ...

... the $ spec

I hope you are sitting down!! Just kidding, I am expecting a $3000 MSRP settling to a street price of about $25-2700 with discounts and rebates.

The 70-300L is stupid in multiple ways - the separate tripod collar and incompatibility with TCs are two of them, and if they are repeated here, I would say that would reduce the attractiveness of the new 100-400L quite substantially.  I know that, for me, the lack of TC compatibility is a total and complete non-starter, and one reason I never seriously considered the 70-300L, nor will I ever consider it.

It's odd how some people seem to think that anything that doesn't suit exactly what they want is "stupid".

I have the 70-300L, it's my most used lens.  I've never needed or wanted to use a tripod collar, the two other people I know with them are the same in that regard.  For us it's great that the collar is not included, it would just be a piece of junk around the house and the lens would have been more expensive.  So for us, it's  good news.

TC compatibility would be good but I suspect again it would increase the cost or they would have done it.

So, in summary, my favourite lens is in no way stupid, it's my favourite lens because it suits exactly what I want at a price I could accept.  It doesn't suit others and that's fine but I bet Canon market research know more about the user demographics than all of us combined.

Agreed^

Also the Tokina 1.4 TC works great on this lens.

I am wondering if this is going to be too little too late.

The 70-300L is a great lens and 400 is just a slight crop away from 300.  If the 100-400 is much more than the 70-300 I think many will pass, it is just not different enough.

Combine this with the 3 different 150-600's from Tamron and Sigma and anyone who wants more reach over the canon versions will go this route.

I think if this lens is expensive there will be very few sold except for the normal early adopters.

EOS Bodies / Re: Modular DSLR Coming from Canon? [CR2]

I am guessing this will be priced to match the $70,000 cinema 50-1000 lens.  Or in other words, not for us mere mortals.

Honestly, the 5D3 is everything I need and much more.  I have captured many wodnderful memories and I do not think they would be any better with more megapixels or more dynamic range.  It has an excellent af system and I am very happy with the low light noise.

EOS Bodies / Re: Patent: 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 With a Liquid Element
« on: October 20, 2014, 02:41:21 PM »
What advantage would there be to have a liquid element in a sealed camera lens?  Does light pass through clear liquids in a differnet way than solids?
You can alter the shape of the lens, thus varying how the light's path is refracted by the lens.

that is kind of cool.   the lens equivlent of a CVT transmission in a car.

Typical Canon response:

Person 1: We are not making enough money

Person 2: Well then raise the price.

Fixed that for you.
