Pricewatch Deals / Re: Samyang 24mm f/3.5 ED Tilt-Shift in Stock
« on: May 07, 2013, 12:33:50 AM »
Meh...

For 1,000 it is too expensive for a toy but does not have the resolution to compete with the big boys.  I would purchase a used TSE 24L over this any day of the week.

If it's as sharp as the 70-300L, awesome.

I hope they don't downgrade the performance that much - it would be a deal-breaker for me.

I hope that comment was facetious.  The 70-300L is optically superior to the current 100-400L in every way

Agreed, I sold my 100-400 for the 70-300L and have no regrets at all.  Much better lens.

EOS Bodies / Re: EOS 70D, DIGIC 6 & 18mp Sensors

I think 18 MP is more than enough for 99% of photographers.  I do hope it is a completely different sensor that just happens to also have 18mp... With less low ISO noise, etc.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS-b Images Leak & a New Kit Lens

I Don't Know.....

I like the size of the 5D, 7D and all of the x0D's (Except the super-rebel 60d).  I can see the value of having a system that is easilly transportable like an EOS M if it could focus faster than continental drift.  This one is in the akward middle.  Too big to be as packable as a small system and too small to be handled like a big camera.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 7D Mark II Information [CR1]

I think Canon will put forward an affordable camera in 7D2...~$2500 at introduction perhaps even a tad lower...a price that tracks down with time to ~$2000 or even ~1900 (gasp! WHAT!? NO?....yes!) ;)

This is based on the assumption we are talking about 7D2 and its intended mass market and not the 4D or 3D etc.

Given that the original 7D cycle has stretched a few years now, and the pent up interest to buy is there for original users, I think they have the potential to sell a lot of units...*IF* it is priced right.

IF they miss the price mark...and offer some super-duper camera which is out of reach of many current 7D users, they have a problem... accolades and admiration by few who buy and can afford it and envy and apathy by many who can't... never paid no bills at Canon ;)

In such a case they will have to make embarrassing "Adorama ebay sale" kind of backdoor price reduction (5D3 anyone?) moves to bring the price in line with market forces to move enough units. Bring it down a bit, and they sell more units to easily off-set even the price reduction.

One should expect the 7D "preorder" price to be high (duh! It is targeted toward a certain kind of sap...er...I meant user). Look at the price trajectory of 6D in just the past few months... and it has not settled into its "real" target price yet...give it few more months.

So the intended target price for 7D may well end up being $2000 just few months after release in which case they cannot really pack it with high-end 1DX features in earnest.

Again, we are talking about 7D successor here, not a would-be 4D candidate. Canon is a conservative company. No risky market experimentation or bold moves usually...

So 7D2 will be a sensible camera at a sensible price.

It is sounding to me that the 70D is moving up to become the 7D replacement.  The 7D2 is then free to become a replacement for the 1D bodied APSH cameras for sports shooters.

Hmmm, this does sound quite interesting.  It sounds like this camera will be positioned to have better features than the 5D3 just with a crop sensor.  If it is using the 1D battery it will have to have a 1D body.  Add the extra FPS and (Hopefully) a sensor that can cope with low ISO noise, I cannot see canon pricing this less than the5D3.  I am guessing it will come in right around $3,500.  That way most of us will complain about the price but they will still be sold out for months anyway because all of the sports and bird photographers will line up to put in their orders.  Then like the 5d3 the price will come down to more reasonable ($2,800 street price with occasional $2,500 sales) levels.

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: The Next Zeiss Lenses? [CR2]

damn I was really hoping for a zeiss 21mm TSE
not sure why they dont make a tilt shift but i bet they would do a seriously good job of one

That would be an interesting lens. Zeiss microcontrast with the Canon TSE 24 II's functionality.  Landscape photog's dream!!!

The issue I see is the vast majority of Zeiss' "affordable" (Under or around 2K?) lenses are just re-issues of 20+ year-old designs with modern mounts and some have auto aperture.  The Hollywood 28/2, the 100 Makro, the 35/1.4, the 21/2.8 all come to mind.

To make a TS lens you need a much larger image circle than a normal full-frame lens.  The Zeiss 21 is a very complicated lens already and I do not think it could be scaled up without a complete re-design.   Since a 50-55mm f1.4 is one of the simplest lenses to design, and the fact that they are asking 3,000 euros for their new version of a lens with that simplicity, I can imagine a 21mm TS would be in the $8-10,000 range.  Perhaps they could re-use one of their medium format lenses and add a tilt/shift base? (though I don't know if 21mm is even possible on a med format system)

Meh....hard to get excited over these.    I have and love the Zeiss 21, 25, 50mp and 100mp and love them all. IF this lens is like the 55 1.4 then it will cost the same too which means 3000 Euro or even more dollars.  Unfortunately Zeiss seems to have completely turned their backs on the enthusiast market.

I have a feeling Zeiss lens announcements will be like when car and driver magazine shows a new Ferrari.  I look at the picture, say wow that is really cool, and then forget completely about it.

EOS-M / Re: The Next EOS M? [CR1]

Thank Goodness!  I was worried Canon was going to regurgitate the same noisy 18 mp sensor they have been using for years.  Here is to hoping it has good low ISO noise!!

EOS-M / Re: EOS M Autofocus Performance Won't Improve via Firmware [CR2]
« on: February 19, 2013, 03:24:22 PM »
It was the terrible AF performance that kept me away not the lack of lenses.  I can live without the viewfinder and built in flash because it makes the body smaller but slow af destroys any use I would have for this model which is taking shots of my family/ kids etc.

EOS-M / Re: Why no Sigma DN lenses for Canon M?

Because even if all 12 EOS-M owners buy the lens, Sigma will still not be able to recover the R&D costs to develop it.

Lenses / Re: New EOS-M Lenses Soon [CR2]
« on: January 17, 2013, 10:53:46 AM »
If canon put decent AF on the EOS-M it would be perfect for me.  The point of the mirrorless is that it is so small.  When you add things like OVF and full frame the whole system just gets bigger defeating the whole purpose.  I have a 5D3 and if I want shots in the dark I will bring it with me.  I am perfectly fine composing and shooting using the back LCD, I would like it as small as possible with Canon 1.6x crop IQ.

The only other would-be-nice change would be to make it look retro like some of the Fuji and Olympus cameras coming out but that is not a deal breaker at all.

Canon General / Re: refurbished Canon 5d mk iii

I sold my refurb 7D to fund a new 5d3.  I got probably about $100 less than an equal non refurb camera.  all in all I came out way ahead.
