Software & Accessories / Re: Manfrotto 055 vs 190, 498 vs 496
« on: January 10, 2013, 07:37:28 AM »
Well, I went through the pain of trying to decide what kind of tripod to get two months ago.  I settled on the 055 aluminum basic legs and a Markins ball head.  I got the basic legs because the other versions of the 055 aluminum were longer and heavier.

Anyway, after about two weeks I couldn't stand how big the 055 was and so I got the 190 carbon 4-section and love it.  It supports my T2i with 70-200 f2.8 without a problem and is much easier when carrying with a backpack.

Also, the 190 carbon has lever locks, while the 055 aluminum had screw tighting legs, which made setup and take down a lot slower.

With all that being said, I have a 055XDB available if you want it for cheap, as I couldn't return it.

as of today there is a separate thread titled "Canon has Refurbished 5DIII for $2240": http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=12006.0

I'm assuming this isn't a troll-post, but I'm kind of surprised because the refurb thread is one that is currently active and shows up on the front page.

As the author of that thread, it was not a troll post.  I use dealsea.com and slickdeals.net and I think both of those sites posted the link, which I reposted in the thread here.  However, it is true that the deal is no longer available.

Perhaps we should all just wait 10 more years, and then we'll be able to rummage through garbage cans and get the 5DIII for free.

Let's not bother talking about how much the price has dropped: as technology progresses, the price of older tech goes down.  All that I was doing was letting people know who wanted to jump on a good price for today's market.  Market conditions will always dictate price, and a year ago $3,500 was the price.  If you don't like how things go out of date, I suggest you find a different world to live in.

Benro is good too.  I don't know anything about that particular model, but LensRentals rents these out for travelers that can't afford Gitzo:

Another option would be to go to Lens Rentals and see what they rent out to people.  If it's reliable enough to rent out to people, then it will be good enough for home use.

$46 for the legs and a head?  Don't waste your money.  $100 for legs and $100 for head, minimum.

Just wondering, are these lights LED or incandescent?

I'm in a similar predicament.  I just bought the 5d Mark III and 24-70 2.8 II.  (Arriving on Monday...damn UPS was supposed to deliver today but was late).

Anyways, I have a 60D and the 10-22mm... I love using it at 10mm.  If I sell the 60D+grip and accessories, and the 10-22 on craigslist, I can probably get about $1500 and buy the 16-35 2.8 II.

My questions is:

Is it worth selling my current gear?

OR

Do you guys think I should keep the 60D, not bother with the hassle of trying to sell gear, and have a backup body/2nd camera angle when I do video work.

I've been using Amazon to sell any old gear I had (sold kit lens, EF 28 f1.8, and 70-200 f4) was sold in less than two days, and more than what I paid for them on the Canon Refurbished site (the 28mm and 70-200 that is).  Just make sure you have the lowest price and it will sell quick, I promise.

I've never noticed this before, but generally, with lots of lights in the background, one usually kicks it up to f16 to get nice stars.  Almost looks like localized lens flare.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 6d Reviews

They aren't complete reviews by any means, but LensRentals/Roger Cicala has both taken one apart and tested the AF center point:

I just came here to post that myself.  Glad I checked first.

I wouldn't be too stuck on an f/2.8 lens, particularly if you're on a tight budget. The EF-S 10-22 f3.5-4.5 is Gold Standard and if you ever want to on-sell, it will hold its value better than just about anything else mentioned so far.

Glad someone else agrees with me.  It's also in his budget if he buys it used or refurbished (see reply above).
