I have 35mm covered in the 16-35 f/2.8L II, the 24-105 f/4L IS, and the 35 f/2 IS, and I use them all regularly.

The 35 f/2 IS is one the nicest little primes to use, I would never sell it. It's small and light, does a great job in low light, decent shallow DOF, great for video, and makes an excellent walk around lens.

EDIT:  I also have the 40mm f/2.8 STM, and I rarely use it, don't like it. Manual focus is impossible, aperture is only 2.8 (compared to 2), and it has no IS.

I don't know about your past experiences, but in present day Greece, descent size hotels should have good internet and you can always find an internet cafe with good bandwidth.

My greek experiences were long enough ago that nobody expected wifi to be fast.

The hotel I stayed at in Milan in November charged a fair bit for internet and even then it barely hit a 512k. When I was out in Brescia it was free and usably fast (maybe 3-4mbit). Still I have 105Mbit internet at home in the US and live in a town where most cafe's have at least 20, so i'm a bit shocked when i'm back in Europe and those speeds just don't seem to exist.

Most hotels I've been in has free connection with an ethernet cable, and more than fast enough. Might be an alternative.
I've been in Italy for 6 weeks now, and I've found free, fast  wifi everywhere. I bought a month to month SIM card from TIM (Italy's biggest wireless provider). The first month is 45 Euro, and subsequent months are 30 Euro. That gives 4G/LTE and a 20GB monthly limit. The coverage is wide, but in dense cities, like Florence, the buildings are tall, solid stone, so the signal is often weak indoors, and sometimes weak in particularly narrow streets with big stone buildings all around (which does a number on GPS too) .
Any way... you should not have a problems finding free wifi in Italy, but for a SIM card service you need an unlocked phone and your passport.

Take your 35, the 85 and leave the rest at home.

I'm sorry, but 35 is not even close to wide enough for all the fantastic sites, especially in Rome.


I am in Florence, Italy right now (must see city), and I have my 16-35 f/2.8L mk II and it is often not wide enough. There's detail everywhere you look, and spaces can be tight even on the street. I wish I had a fisheye or 14mm with me. The churches are amazing, you are going to need as wide as possible to do them justice. So much happens on the street that you need to go wide there too.

This trip is 7 weeks so, not travelling light. But I have used every piece of gear that I brought. No concerns about theft anymore than Canada or the US.

The Canon 5DIII with 16-35 is the one combo I would not leave home without. In fact you could do great with just that, add the 35 f/2 IS for low light, shallow DOF, and an 85 if needed, but I also love having the 70-200 here  :)

Yes, Canon already had that, but it darkens the OVF quite heavy. Furtermore you loose 1-2 stops of light to the sensor which has to be compensated. This is a Cul-de-sac for the majority, I think.

They could do both: provide optional flip up for the semi-transparent film, which could be used in low light (slower frame rate). Leave it in place in good light for higher frame rate shooting.

Yeah... I read that pricing point too. But idk, I think canon is in a rough place with the c300. Sony made an interesting move with the fs7, essentially taking it's lower rung camera and moving its spec list a hair's breath away from the f5 -- the reason is obvious... cameras in this mid high region (f5, c500) aren't selling. The c300 has been selling well at it's price point until recently, but the Fs7 is so well spec'd from almost any angle that it's hard to see how canon could bump the c300 without being in direct competition. Do we really think the MkII c300 will have 180+fps? 14 stops dynamic range? A better codec than sony? These are features where canon has always lagged behind. It's hard to imagine that they could or would "leapfrog" sony in these areas. The color accuracy/skin tone thing....sure.. Ease of use/ergonomics... Check, we'll probably also see 4k, 10bit, a shoulderable form factor. I think if canon wants to bring this camera out at 16-17k like the last model, they've got their work cut out for them. There's going to have to be something awfully alexa-like about this camera for them to say the FS7 isn't a direct competitor.

Yes ... easy to say FS7 is not a direct competitor, but the market will decide.
I'd be happy with the FS7 feature set with Canon skin tones in a C100 body, even if it's a bit more expensive.

Because the focus action on these is extremely smooth, and the travel is long. I have the cinema version of the 85, 85 T1.5, and it is a pleasure to focus manually. Extremely smooth and precise.

I have the Tokina 50 - 135 f/2.8 lens for DSLR from 5 years ago. It is parfocal, and delivers next to no focus breathing, I suspect this is the same or similar optic. In fact I kept this lens when I bought the 5D2 primarily because it is parfocal, sharp and doesn't focus breathe.  Do yourself a favor and look for a used one, you wont get clickless aperture but you'll save almost $4000. It's a great little lens!

Hmmmm.  My daughter's high school volleyball career has ended (a few favorites at ) so I could maybe sell my 10-18 and 70D to finance that.  Also, I can probably sell my 200 2.8 since I'm going to get a 100-400 anyway and that might work indoors with the 6D.
Might that really make sense with my entire kit being the 6D, 35, 85 and 100-400?

That would make an excellent kit!

I am partial to ultrawide, so I would recommend adding the 16-35 f/4L IS at some point. That would give you a Pro setup from 16 - 400.

I have the 35mm and the 50mm Arts....should I just make this a clean Trifecta....I would further justify my Sigma Dock if I use it for 3 lenses instead of just 2, right???  :P
Now that you mention it - I have a crop sensor and a 10-18 so maybe 24 doesn't make a ton of sense.  My other standard lens is the 35 2.0 IS and then I have a 85 1.8 for outdoor portraits.  The 35 is generally what I have on the camera, but 50mm is a little "better" for indoor portraits. 
Would you think that having a 35 and a 50 makes sense?  Of course, the difference is more pronounced on my crop than on your ff so maybe "yes", but maybe not.  Maybe 28mm and 50mm to really round it out (vs. 35 and 50)?

You'd be better with a 24 and a 50.
24 gives about 38mm (good all around), and 50mm give you a nice 80mm portrait lens.

I will likely try it.
I had the original Canon 24 f1.4 (so compact and wonderful useful-even for flowers) .. and I rented a few times the 24 mk II ...the newer one had lower chromatics, a bit sharper in corners...but bokeh was not as good as original (imo) and shaded in corners worse than original...
so I waited... then I GAVE my brother my original 24 f1.4 ....for his 50D I gave him.....
and just last week I missed it much... when shooting in dark clubs ...   wide and fast is so valuable in a dark little club.  my 35 A sig performed quite well as usual...but I sure miss the 24mm.... I could stand next to guitarist and yet... get the trio in the photo.

I remember the original Canon 24 f1.4, had focus  problems ...especially  out at 5-10 feet as described, However, I sent back to Canon and  when it returned (they re-electronics it they said) it was just great all over.  My sig 35 f1.4 A   hardly ever missed focus on 5D2.  And I got significantly more reliable focus on my 5D3 with Canon 24mk I, sig 35A and my 85L II....... vast improvement...especially the 85L.

I am getting the 11-24 Canon zoom ($gasp$)- so I am gonna have too much overlap for my normal tastes - but I NEED fast and wide...... for sure focus will be more difficult at 24mm wide open - especially in the 'dark' (imo) ..

but I will try this one.... 
I hope for good coma, sharp edges, low distortion, low CA and reliable come with it.

I thought the 85 would be my next sigma....but I kept the 85 f1.2 II .... after a long wait

I am never gonna get another guitar.... I guess...   sigh

I am really hopeful about this lens too, when my 24 f/1.4 mkII was well focused the shots were great. It really is a special focal length / aperture combination!

Not so. At f/1.4, focus is really difficult on 24mm. I had the Canon 24 f/1.4, and it missed focus most of the time when the focal distance was greater than 6 ft on my Canon 5D2. I sent it back because of AF issues. It's difficult to tell when you have good focus on a 24mm unless the subject is really close. I am told that this lens works better on the 5D3, but I never gave it another chance after my 5D2 experience.

I'll be interested in this Sigma if it performs better than the Canon in every respect, including AF. Wait and see time.

As an owner of the C300, If I had to guess, I think that canon will try to compete with the FS7 with the new c300 Mark II, and it will do that by sticking with the same sensor, bayering it out at 4k and by dropping the price into the 8-9k range. Will we see XAVC or some derivitave? probably. Will we see 10 bit. Probably. Will we see increased DR...I doubt it. I think they'll stick with the same chip, essentially collapse the C500 into the c300 range and probably clean the Fs7's clock in the process. (c300 is still the most popular doc camera out there, and with the EF lens range, canon has a huge advantage over sony in this space.)

I think the rumor of an new Alexa competitor is dead-on though. The C500 has been a dog in terms of sales, as it's DR fell short of almost all of it's competitors. I'm guessing the C300 drops in price, and the replacement for the C500 (probably a new # or name) debuts with a new chip, with alexa like DR and highlight roll off, at a substantial increase in price --think f55/red.

I personally would love to see a fixed zoom lens C series camera. small form factor, motorized zoom, Dual-pixel AF -- something that brings back the simplicity of the GL and XA cameras with a large sensor....something you can put a less experienced operator on and they can handle. I'd buy two.

I love everything you say here, but I wish they could put that C300 you describe in a C100 size body, I'd be sold at $9,000.
