EOS Bodies / Re: 6D or 5D Mk II
« on: September 17, 2012, 10:53:07 AM »
yeah this isn't for folks who already own 5D2s.  it's for us schlubs who've never had a full-frame DSLR. it's not a pro-AF but can it really be worse than the 5D2? i doubt it if the -3EV AF is even close to correct. really the biggest disappointment is the lack of articulated screen. i would trade GPS and a touchscreen just for that after finding it so useful on my 60D.

provided it passes the hands-on test, i'll probably give it a year after its release when the retail price goes down well sub-$2000 and then pick up a refurb. maybe it'll be available on the CLP by then as well. that should be a pretty fair price for a FF with Digic 5+

i just wish the strategy was to release a model for more advanced users with a built-in EVF, a useful mode dial and dedicated exposure compensation dial. i'd be willing to sacrifice LCD screen real-estate for a built-in EVF a la the NEX-7

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 60D long exposure lock-up
« on: August 07, 2012, 10:30:09 PM »
never had mine really 'lock up' before in long exposures.

by any chance do you have long exposure noise reduction enabled or set to auto? if so on long exposures the camera will also expose against the closed shutter for an equivalent amount of time so it can use that shot to subtract away some of the noise from your real shot. so say if you have it enabled or set to auto and have a single exposure for an hour your camera will be exposing against a closed shutter for an additional hour.  if you don't know what's happening it can give the user the impression that the camera is locked up. even if you turn the camera off it will continue to  expose against the closed shutter.

i know of no way to abort the long exposure noise reduction short of yanking the battery though i'll admit i've never done that so i don't know you're risking losing your original long exposure.

16-35 f/2.8 and a 50 f/1.4. to me that set up is just begging for a full frame camera.

starting tomorrow a refurb'd 7D will only be $1155 with the coupon code EOS712 http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_260463_-1

so maybe that's the best idea. get a cheap, refurb'd 7D for ~$1200 and save up for the entry level FF. spending money on a 10-22mm when you've already got a 16-35mm f/2.8 seems pointless if you ever have aspirations of going full frame because the cost of that lens alone makes up a good portion of the difference between a high end crop and a full frame.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon's Next Full Frame Camera [CR2]

It's all shooting style. I use my swivel screen for stills far more than for video. A swivel screen let's over the head shots not be at the mercy of spray and pray and for low angle shots I don't have to get down in the dirt. plus you can be a little stealthier with candids when you don't have a big black camera pressed to your face.

I'm curious as to what kind of fps and buffer size for shooting RAW we're talking about here. it needs to be better than the G1X.

the patented 35mm f/2.0 IS

It only makes sense to have a line of less-than-5D3 FF frame DSLRs out there. without it the only source of customers who NEED to purchase EF lenses are owners of $3500+ bodies.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L USM - Any negative comments?

owned one for four months now have nothing bad to say about the lens itself. it's just great.

the price for lack of a tripod ring is a little steep but given what's happening with all new Canon lenses it's not out of step.
the zoom ring and manual focus ring are in different positions than a lot of lenses but after using it enough where zooming is instinctive i like the position better because the camera is more balanced in my hands.
no Canon extenders but is compatible with the Kenko. i guess results vary because i have the $130 Kenko 1.4x extender on it and even though it's reporting f/8.0 to my 60D it still autofocuses.
which kenko? I have heard the older DG versions will AF its the newer DGX ones that are suposed to not AF
when i used my DGX one on my 1Dmk3 with the 28-300 L it would even AF using outer points at f8 not only the center point but they were noticably slower so i primarily used the center point. I dont own any 5.6 lenses anymore to test this out on tough
C-AF 1.4X TELEPLUS MC4 DGX

No tape trick necessary. It reports f/8 but my 60D still autofocuses. It's not the quickest AF at f/8 but still accurate.

correct me if i'm wrong but the 1DX has two Digic 5+ and the 5D3 has a single Digic 5+ for image file processing only. instead they each have a Digic 4 processor dedicated to autofocus.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: What about new crops ?
« on: March 05, 2012, 11:36:13 PM »
the Rebels target a completely different market than the pro bodies. the pros aren't going to shell out the dough except for real, substantial gains which take longer to realize. take the progression of the 5D, 5D2 and now 5D3. each one was a great substantial leap forward which only leaves you wondering just how great the 5D4 will be 3-4 years from now.

for a lot of consumers it's been decently successful putting out a Rebel every year where each summer and Christmas you've got a new model with its own bells and whistles to distinguish it from its predecessor to justify it being overpriced. moreover you've got the more conscious ones going after the previous model which is still in production instead of balking altogether and Canon makes a profit on it too. that's a pretty different environment than those professional cameras with constantly high prices and longer refresh rates. as far as guts go, little has changed in the Rebels since the Rebel t2i and other than Digic 5 I'm not sure how much will change with the Rebel t4i but Canon needs those new models because they surely couldn't keep charging $800 for a Rebel t2i for three straight years while waiting for the 7D2 to debut and hand down its guts.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 18-45 f/3.5-5.6 Kit Lens for APS-C Mirrorless Patent
« on: February 20, 2012, 11:25:51 AM »
i'm thinking the G1X with its APS-C sensor is the precursor to Canon's mirrorless, interchangeable lens debut, kind of like the Fuji's X100 was to the X-Pro1. next year the new model G series comes with a lens mount and hopefully a built-in electronic viewfinder.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 60D or wait?
« on: February 11, 2012, 12:02:29 PM »
if it were me i'd wait until the Rebel t4i is announced. of course it's going to have Digic 5 and thus by default the best APS-C noise performance Canon offers. but what you should pay attention to is whether the Rebel t4i gets a new sensor or is still keeping alive the 7D1's sensor as I think the t4i and 70D will have the same sensor. at that point i would be able to make a more informed decision between high ISO performance/new features of the t4i, the ergonomics and speed of the 60D or waiting for the best of both worlds with the 70D.

unless the 7D and 60D lines merge again just one model version after they both split off from the 50D, I would not expect the 70D to have better AF than the 60D. however it's important to note that the 60D's 9 point AF is significantly better than the Rebels' 9 point AF because it has 8 more cross-type points.

EOS Bodies / Re: The Price of Full Frame
« on: February 10, 2012, 10:30:49 AM »
i'd be very interested in an "entry-level" full frame camera. what i'm looking for is basically a 60D with a full-frame sensor.

take the 60D build quality, articulated LCD screen, put a 5D2 sensor in it with Digic 5 and sell it for $1500 (i.e. twice as much as the 60D and probably half the 5D3).

if something like that came to life i'd probably preorder it though i'm not holding my breath. if it doesn't i'll probably wait until next year and opt for a used or refurbished 5D2.
