Lenses / Re: Dropped my 70-200L F4 onto the carpet from my bag. Advice.
« on: January 11, 2013, 10:36:56 PM »
If it takes good pics dont worry about it. My 70-200L f4's manual focus ring doesnt work well anymore. I have had the lens forever. Dont sweat it. You can always move on to something better. My 40D stopped working one day. Got the 7D. Couldnt be happier.

My biggest complaint about what Canon has been dishing out with their DSLR's in the past 5yrs or so, is that you can almost depend that they are not going to work right out of the box. You need to wait for several firmware upgrades, and even then the problem may not be fixed. I was VERY discouraged when my 40D stopped working due to a bad shutter after a couple of years. As I read more about that particular problem, it was pretty common. Thats not good.

And dont get me started on their lenses. They continue to lag behind third party lenses. Even after the mkll and mklll attempts!

It looks like Canon continues to crank out crap! Very disappointing performance. I have the Sigma 50/1.4. I'm happy with it, dont use it much actually. It looks like, from this performance test, I will continue to look to Sigma/Tamron for my future wide angle choices.

Canon needs to raise the bar! They make their own glass for gods sake!

I've been a long time Canon DSLR enthusiast, I now own the 7D. From what I have read about the 6D, I honestly dont see much of draw there, over the 7D. If I was a semipro wedding photographer, who didnt already have a 5D of some incarnation I think the 6D could be a good step in the right direction.

As far as the crop factor, I like it, and take advantage of it with my long lenses for sports etc. I dont think I would want to sacrifice that for FF.

As far as noise, the 7D stays very clean up to about 400 ASA. I live in Arizona, so sunshine is not a problem!

EOS Bodies / Re: Who said Canon cameras suck?!?
« on: October 08, 2012, 11:16:31 PM »
My only comment would be that the 40D really did suck! I had one and the shutter quit working. It was several years old, and the 7D just came out so I realized that it was time to upgrade.

I wasnt really ready to upgrade but I'm glad I did. I ended up giving the 40D to a friend of less means. The 7D blows it away in every respect. One other 'Canon sucks' comment would be on some of their 'L' series lenses. I have a couple of their telephotos and I like them. The 70-200 f4 is made pretty cheaply, now the manual focus ring doesnt work right. I have not bought their wide or standard 'L' lenses because I dont believe they compete well with the competition, for the price.

I like my 400 f5.6L on the 7d. I can crop it in a bit if I need to.

Beyond 200, I would recommend the 400 f5.6L. I have had that lens for many years as well. Reasonable price. Nice build. Definitely need a monopod for weight and stability. I use this lens all the time! I love it. The bouka is fantastic. Great looking white lens as well. Built in hood.

I have owned the 70-200 f4 form many years though several DSLR bodies. Part of me want to not like it so I can get something else, but its such a great performer for the price and weight. One thing I can say is that my manual focus ring is not working right. There is some slack in its operation which pretty much makes it unusable. Not a biggie because I use auto focus 99.9% of the time. Its a great outdoor sports lens. Pretty sharp even at f4. The new f2.8L is very good though. When I bought the f4, it was a sharper lens then the first generation f2.8.
