magic lantern on the 5dm2 the one it seems to work on.
Did the wedding today and still had troubles.
It is like when in av and ettl the camera and flash do not communicate(may also be in other mode but just not manual) no matter how i change the settings it is still blown out by a considerable amount. And this is with iso static at 100. no and the aperture set at what ever applicable for photo. and high speed sync to ensure it can acquire necessary shutter speed.   
It is driving me nuts. in Manual mode on camera i can get it but i feel like i used to us AV and ETTL all the time.
probably me just not knowing how flash is working.

I have been having a problem with my flash for a while. But i dont think it is with my flash i believe it with the user.
I have a 600ex and a 5dm3 and 5dm2.
Whenever typically for a wedding since the shots are moving fast and i do not have time to continually adjust stuff i put my cam on av and my flash on ettl.
with my 5d2 it works out just fine.
with my m3 tho it always seems to be off. like the flash all the suddent becomes under powered and isnt bounce flashing correctly(typically pointed up with gary fong)
whenever i change one setting it doenst seem to effect anything-i understand because it is in av and ettl both semi-automatic modes changing something means the camera will compensate for it.
but ill change flash to +1 to add more to it and it does nothing. ill change it to -2 no noticeable difference in image quality.
it makes me almost want to use my m2 more! so frustrating. it has been going on for a while now and i cannot seem to figure it out.
could it be a metering mode? did they change the way the m3 works with flash? is it a new ettl? please help with any ideas as i have a wedding tomorrow and this has been driving me mad.

I could not possibly match the diligence of Ryan's post. Just a couple of comments.
1. Size and shutter sound matter, but probably not as much as you think. The reason is that you will almost certainly stand out in whatever venue in Indonesia you are shooting, and you'll just have to use your wit and streetsmarts to be able to smooth your way through whatever inquiries (official or otherwise) you may get.
2. You have enough kit for anything up to a moon landing. Just take the camera(s) you handle best. Above all, do NOT try to learn new gear on a critical shoot or expensive  vacation. Rent the gear if you must; bvut spend a few days full time playing with before you board your aircraft. I learned the hard way ...

Thanks thats good wisdom. I appreciate everyones responses. Due to Price the Leica is in no way happening before this trip. sad but its how life works.
The x100s is still a possibility as is a new lens.
Anyone know any good places to read some tips on street photography? I think by reading that and working with my current equipment i can see what i am missing and see what i really want in a new item.??

I am throuroghly impressed! That was an amazing post sir! Thank you for the valuable input.
We will be going in the beginning of August. So if it will still be rainy that does sound like a factor in my decision making.
So far your review of the x100s only seems to back up what I am reading else where. I just want to make sure it is something I can use in combination with the other things I use my cameras for.
Sounds like I need to find a place where I can try both a Leica and a x100s to see what feel I want. I feel like with the x100s I am making a temporary investment whereas with the Leica or sigma it's more long term and usability.
So far that is what's keeping me from going to a x100s.
If canon made a Leica type design using ef or Efs lenses they would have my money faster than anything but eos m just is t cutting it yet.

I have a 14 day trip to indonesia at the end of the summer. I love street photography and would like that to be a huge part of the trip while i am there.
I currently have a canon 5d III, 5d II, 24-105,70-2002.8 ii, 85 1.8, 50 1.8, 16-35 ii, 100mm 2.8.
I also have the canon AE-1 and a 50mm 1.8.
I feel like having the AE-1 has changed the way i look at street photography.
Its such an easier smaller form.
So i have been looking at a few options as i dont want to take this full list of lenses to Indonesia.
1-Fuji Film X100s-fast focusing(sorta), small form, good focal length-fixed lens
2-Sigma 35 F/1.4 incredible sharp(apparently), works with 5d iii
3-renting a leica for that time period and see if that is the way i want to go

I shoot in such a photojournalistic style at what ever i do(event, wedding, street, portraits) i want to make sure the equipment i have fits that agenda.
I have been hoping forever that canon would come out with some digital randefinder but unless this new EOS M rumors comes true and is out of character for canon i am still back to these 3 options as far as i can tell...Thanks in advance for all your help.

I was sorely disappointed in the EOS M. It was t a game changer at all so this news is somewhat exciting for me although I am not getting my hopes up.
My opinion is that they could blow things away if they had a large sensor with some quick basic lenses. Go very simple on body design as well like x100s. I am very tempted right now to  getting that camera. I know canon can come out with something better but it may not be good for business to do so.

So excited Arizonans represent on this forum! I live in flagstaff az. Best of all worlds- 1 hour from Grand Canyon- 30 minute from Sedona. And smack dab in the middle of as much pine as you will ever want.

Rode videomic pro is the way to go. Love it the sound is about as good as you are going to get out of on camera shotgun.
One note- it is obvious but just in case. Shotgun mics are directional. So I only bring that up because if your shooting family on your vacation make sure all the people talking are very close to each other.
If you are shooting landscape/culture and want mic for ambient realize its going to be super directional ambient sounds. For this I would recommend rode stereo mic.
Also those have been linked with plural eyes in the past when your purchase it!

I actually use mine quite a bit. So much so that I am trying to slow down. I use it a ton for event photography which is a horrible idea in my opinion. Its distortion can really mess with people if they are not center frame. I have the 24-105 and i do not like it so i end up going with 16-35 zoomed in to lessen the amount of distortion.
It is amazing for video. I cannot stress how great this lens is to use for any video i do. Just enough zoom and goes wide enough i can get a full room in a shot.
Basically i wouldnt sell it to get another lens. I love my wide angle i just need to learn to use it at the right times.

I cannot speak for the other lenses but i can say the 100mm 2.8l should not be use for night time street shots unless  you plan on manually focusing. The lens is amazing but i have to switch to something faster for focusing. In my experience with street photography you have a split second to capture a look if your lens is spinning back and forth it can get real old real quick.

I wouldnt sell it.
Lets be honest how much are you really going to get from it? I have a 5d mark II and III and i am looking to get a third camera(it makes more sense for me because i do video where multiple are required)
But it is huge to have a camera that if i have the one risky shot I can do it with more confidence.
To me i would never sell almost any equipment to finance other equipment.
For example i could sell the 24-105 to get the 24-70II but when shooting video or having multiple cameras at a shoot is so much more helpful then the 600 dollars i would get for it.
just my opinion.

I have 5d mark iii and ii.
Yes i did mean ISO 12233.
I have the 85mm 1.8(don't really like 85mm 1.2ii just because of focus method). So i have the tighter portraits for the most part covered.
I am deciding between the 35 f2 is and 35 1.4(sigma) or waiting on a improved 50mm.
I think probably one of the best ways would be to "lock" my 16-35 at 35 and play with that focal length for a bit. I know i want a fast 50(my 50 1.8ii and FD 50 1.8 are among my favorite lenses).
I guess i am just unsure of the value of the 35mm and it seems to be a valuable to a lot of my type of photography and videography. I appreciate all your input. Its good to hear that the sigma is doing so well. I have never bought anything non-canon so i am a little apprehensive but it seems to be a great way to go. Hope Canon comes out with a upgraded L before i make my decision as that would probably change things

Third Party Manufacturers / 35mm 1.4

I am currently missing a large aperture lens. I am really looking for one for portraits And wedding/event environments. I looked at the sigma compared to the canon and it is way better based of the digital picture ISO 12800. Also there is the 35mm f2 is that looks pretty amazing but I first want to know if there is a huge difference between 1.4 And 2 at 35mm. If not that huge the is on the f2 would be amazing for video for me.
I have wanted a 50mm for a while but am just waiting because I would like to see a new one. The 50mm 1.2 and 1.4 is so close in quality but I would like to buy a sealed lens that isn't one I am going to want to upgrade Down the road.

Is a 35mm tight enough that the background stays blurred? Or would waiting for a upgraded 50 be better?

I have lightroom 4.3 and mac 10.7.5.
I am actually starting to believe that it is an issue with my mac.
I had a friend trying to plug a usb drive into one of my usb ports today and it would take forever to fully load. Felt a lot like trying to get the pictures to load. I think that my usb ports are having issue because there is no wayt they should be loading that slowly. I can plug a USb device into the port and it works fine but the usb storage is Very slow...
