Business of Photography/Videography / What your go kit?
« on: January 16, 2015, 04:02:28 PM »
i am going on another out of the country trip and I have yet to figure out how to really pack and what to take on board the plane as my ready to go kit. I have two pelican cases full of equipment that flys below. Photo/video equip.
The point of the trip is journalistic documentation about a certain group to raise awareness. Is it best to pick a zoom like 16-35 and one body and the rest below or is it worth it to carry more lenses on board?
Each time I travel my carry on list gets shorter and shorter.
This time I am thinking small body, 16-35, go pro.
Also the country is Nicaragua if any knows any local customs or traditions I should be sensitive to.
I would to do something very much like what user mesodan did in his post about his trip to Afghanistan.

I went Vello for my 5dm3. I love it it was way cheaper than the canon. There is a quality difference. I have purchased everything canon. I just want my stuff to work.
But this vello is the first off brand i have had and its great. I didnt think i would use it that much but i actually hate using my non-gripped 5d now because it so small.
And to those saying they never go through a battery in one day i honestly dont know how you do that. One wedding and i will exchange out both batteries at least once. OF course thats with about 1-2 bars left.
I do have to take it off when i use it on a camera stabilizer for video. THats a real pain so thats why one isnt gripped.

EOS Bodies / Re: Poll: Most wanted new features for 5D Mark IV
« on: December 21, 2014, 11:54:28 AM »
For me it either needs to be
- 4k video and i believe some of those other options will fall in line with that(fast fps, video specific features, sharper video, etc).
- High Megapixel

I honestly don't think they can avoid these two topics any longer in a under $10k body.

My forecast for whats going to happen?
The 5d is an everybody camera-They can put 4k in it and not effect any wedding shooters, event, etc. It would just increase all the specs to handle the data and will benefit everyone even on the shooting side. A camera that can handle more data faster is a plus for all teams.

They will create a separate specialist camera that will specifically be a high MP line. I think there are people who genuinely do not want that many megapixels. This fits the needs of landscape, studio. Video is hard to tell on this one.

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Deal: Canon EOS Rebel SL1 w/18-55 IS STM $323
« on: December 16, 2014, 11:47:08 AM »
Does anyone have one of these? I am trying to get my wife a little more interested in photography so she can help a bit. would this be a good starting place? I could let her use the 5dm2  but i think it would be more positive if it was her camera??
anyone had experience bringing the significant other on board and is it more helpful if its their camera?

My 5dm2 has just started doing this. But its much shorter. Not sure exactly what is going on but i just started a habit of taking the battery out of it. I am ok with it for that camera but a brand new one? no...

Flagstaff az is a great place! I have lived here for about 8 years. This is where i learned photography.
Beautiful hikes, easy caving, red rocks in sedona, and about a million other things. I would be happy to help you with whatever you would like to know about arizona. Just narrow it down for me so I can give you some good ideas.
As far as food flagstaff has some great Thai food, great bbq and burgers.

EOS Bodies / Re: The Canon EOS 7D Mark II Jumps Out of a Plane
« on: November 07, 2014, 01:00:21 AM »
The fear of this is the autofocus system at f2. That awesome I can see when it is searching but it would be unwatchable with anything but a 70d 7d2 or upgraded c1/300.  Does anyone know what they mean by raw video? I assume thy mean just one of th Downloade me LUTs for canon cameras.

This is good to read. It makes sense but I have only ever done the wedding photos and video with just my team. I am now transitioning to where I get hired to do one or the other not both. I have never shot a wedding where I am not the main media person.
Soon I have a wedding coming up where I will be doing soley video and the clients have hired a very expensive photographer.
I am pretty nervous about shooting it just because every photographer has their rhythm. I don't want to be in the way of his. If anyone has good advice please let me know.
I plan on contacting him early in advance to communicate what i would like to accomplish without getting in his way.
But still any other advice would be great.

Also I don't think I will achieve the level of stupidity seen above.

Lenses / Re: why there are no new L primes
« on: October 24, 2014, 11:02:38 AM »
I would suggest you take another look at the Sigma 50 art. I have it and am enjoying it. It is sharp as anything and as far as focus it seems to hit great on my 5d3. To be honest i dont think i have ever used it nor would i on my  5d2 just because i feel it focus excellent on my other.
I have been wanting a 50mm for a long time and to be honest when canon updates the L i will most likely sell this sigma and have the canon on the way(as long as image quality is there). Not because i am hating this lens but just because i love that red ring.

EOS Bodies / Re: 4K Products Coming From Canon [CR2]
« on: October 24, 2014, 10:51:42 AM »
I am not sure why there are so many freak outs and threats about switching to another brand.
Look up all these cameras before you start shouting out how awesome they are. There are people all over the place talking about the issues and work arounds for these cameras to make them work. When canon releases them they will be a solid reliable product. THey may not have the most cutting edge features(that seems to be Canon of the past) but they will be reliable, solid, functional. Thats what i want out of a product i am using to make money.
If i have constant camera errors i become and unreliable person to use no matter how good i could be.

For example the Gopro are awesome camera, i have a quite  a few myself. But they are in a sense gimmicky. They work but they have been very funky at random times. Sometimes wont turn on, sometimes the battery indicator is off, electronic accessories act quirky. And they only do this 30 sec before a concert, wedding, event, moment happens.
I have never had a single hiccup with any of my canon cameras. I have magic lantern installed on on all of them and there still isnt a single issue i have had so far.
Just saying there is a reason you have a canon camera. Everytime i venture to far i find a product that is not worthy of being used in a demanding situation.

EOS Bodies / Re: No EOS-1D X Replacement in 2014 [CR2]
« on: September 30, 2014, 02:35:26 AM »
I am defiantly waiting on the new upgrade. The 7dm2 sounds good. Wished for high megapixels but that's really not what the 7d line is meant for.
I have never had a 1 series body. The next 1 whatever that's released will probably end up big my first. If it has either high megapixels or 4k it will meet my needs.

Also I have a theory. I think Canon should have different firmwares depending on whether your a video shooter or a photo shooter.  Not so much that you lose functionality but the menu changes to show you and adapt the buttons to your needs. When I am shooting video I do need video jobs it's annoying to access video features. Especially if they add more.
Or we will just start shooting video and pulling high res stills.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Why haven't you left canon?
« on: September 27, 2014, 03:47:43 PM »
I sold cameras before i used them. Its a sad way to employee people but Best Buy wasnt to worried about it then.
Anyhow i had lots of time holding, using, operating the menu, and comparing tech.
Now my opinion may not be worth much as i wasnt skilled but i would say because i had no previous experience my vision was raw and untainted by forums like this:)
Nikons menus, bodies, lens rotation was all funky feeling and awkward to operate.
Canon felt smooth, menus made sense, and the bodies gripped my hand when i held it.

Lots more money then i would care to admit has now been sent to canon. And no matter how ready i am for a HiMegapixel camera none of the alternatives have the same as Canon.
When canon does something its done right and its done well.

Business of Photography/Videography / Re: Concert Photo Copyright
« on: September 13, 2014, 04:51:33 PM »
Thank you guys. That was all great info. I live in the USA.
I believe that if we posted the photos online with any recognizable band member or their banner hanging in the background I could use it.
Its good to know that I have the rights to the photos tho.
I think for future reference I will get the production company to get the bands to sign off on using the pictures on their website. This band is pretty big and would have no reason to want what photos I took unless I happened to get that 1 in million.
thanks. this is why i like this forum, its like my own circle of good smart photo buddies.
