Lenses / Re: Landscape tips needed on shooting the Grand Canyon
« on: November 18, 2012, 02:18:35 AM »
Hi,
Sorry I don't know how to post pictures on here with my iphone.

Take a look at my shot I took a while back.
http://www.redbubble.com/people/redtree/works/5099132-grand-design
The description will show you the Camera and lens used.
Although I now only shoot raw (a must) with the set up I had then I still was lucky enough to get in the top 50 of the Epson Panoramic photog of the year awards.

Though I don't use my zooms anymore and are selling them, the 24-70 and 70-200 will cover most of your needs. The 100mm macro will cover any close ups you may want. Ditch the rest in favour of a compact but sturdy tripod.
As for filters I only used a skylight filter when I took that shot as it protected the lens.
Most of the time I don't bother with filters although I have them I rarely use them unless the scene dynamic range is too wide for the sensor and I want to narrow it.
As for the area I only went to the Hopi point area and sat on the edge and video'd the sun setting and shot various pictures the next day but that area was lovely.
I hope that helps.

Regards
David

Hello,
I have a 5d2 and have very similar set up to you.
I also recently bought an old Hasselblad with 150 and 250 lenses for shooting film. Though i did buy a Zoerk Canon adapter for the Hassey lenses to work on my Canon.
I did a resolution test on my 5d2 with the 70-200 f2.8 USM IS and the 150mm C Hassey at 150mm with a Zork adapter fitted to the Canon. I'll post some examples a little later as the hassy lens gave a slightly better colour rendition and sharpness.
Now this could be the copy of the 70-200mm is off or that I couldn't focus it properly but I set them both up via live view and f stop etc.
I need to try this again as this can't be right.
Regards
David

Why not get a 5dmkii? Just as good and being sold for nothing now people are switching to the other company.

Yep the mega pixel camera is just around the corner. Tomorrow in fact!

They built it specifically for the new lens cap. LOL.

Gotta love Canon, they've got their priorities right.

Take one look at ebay, craigslist, gumtree or most classified ads.
What cameras are being sold? Canons and Canon lenses. I wonder why? Nikon started something.

Never been a better time to buy Canon gear secondhand.

As this is a rumour site. I've just heard that the rumoured Canon 3DX is actually going to be called a 0DX which tops the 1DX.

It's going to be a 100mp "ultra" medium format camera, it's going to have 32 bits of colour rendition and a full 24 steps of dynamic range. It will fit FD, EF and EFs, Nikon, Sony, Leica and Hasselblad lenses and will have 292 areas of AF focus points.

It will have thunderbolt, Firewire 800 and USB3/4/5 built in for future compatibility.
It will also have GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi built in and will have the ability to make phone calls. It will even call you when the battery gets below 10% and recharge itself with gravity induction from the moon at night.

The price point of this little 5oz marvel will be £1000 with a £300 rebate from any Comet store. You'll get a free cinema ticket to the new Disney Star Wars movie too. Coming in December 2012-2022ish.

Sounds like a bargain to me.

At least I can now see where all the research and development time and costs have gone.

Rather than designing and building a new 46mp camera, they come up with reworked bits of plastic.

Excellent job Canon.

Thank you for the advice. I've gone and bought a Hassleblad and have been offered a CFV-50 for £4500 so I think my Canon gear will now go up for sale.

This is the kind of thing I do.

I have a love of B&W and square framing and I keep cropping the 5dII or taking two shots and stitching. Would love to be able to take one shot and make a print from it.

Would adding a Digital back help?

Thank you for your replies.

I have thought about film. Which I think maybe the way I'm going.

No I don't do billboards but I have been requested about cropping and I had to suggest that blowing up a small area of my files would not result in good quality prints. The clients went elsewhere. Personally I tend not to crop unless I want to produce some square frame artwork. Which would be more intentional than poor composition.

I'm stitching most of my landscape/architectural shots with the 24mm TSE, but I'm finding I'm spending a lot of time stitching and would love to not be sat in front of my computer faffing with photoshop, mostly because it's my job to do that already.

I think I will sell my lenses but keep the camera, the 50mm and go medium format and use the medium format lenses with the Canon. I'll use the 50mm when I need autofocus for quick event shots, though I tend to shoot most of my stuff manual focus so I would only be losing live view with the medium format.

Though I did buy a mini Wifi camera for house security which has enough resolution and can be used via my iPhone so I think I may have found my Live View solution.

Canon 5dmkII – 2 year Warranty Remaining (took out optional 3 year warranty)
Canon WFT-E4 II
BG-E6 Battery Grip
17-40mm f3.5L
24mm f3.5 TSEII (8 month Warranty Remaining)
50mm f1.4
85mm f1.2L
100mm f2.8L macro
24-70mm f2.8L
70-200mm IS f2.8L
580EX Pro II
72mm, 77mm, 82mm Ring adapters
Hahnel GigaTPro wireless shutter (Range 100m)
All boxed.

Now I'm thinking of keeping the body, 50mm and WFT. But don't know about the rest.

I want more resolution, any reason why I shouldn't sell?

I've seen a massive dumping of 5d Mkii's and Canon gear on Craigslist too. If there's a deal to be had, I'd say take it. Go for the one which has had the least amount of shutter clicks.
