Could you tell me which open format supports everything the PS does and an converter that will actually convert my psd into that? I would seriously love to have that

Who said anything about a format that supports everything that PSD does? You claimed you would lose access to your data, which is false. You can easily export all the layers to individual PNG files and open them in pretty much whatever software you want to use.

If you want other software that can read PSD files and will let you work with layers, you could try for example:

- Pixelmator, $15
- Photoshop Elements 11, $60 at Amazon at the moment, with free shipping

I can't believe the amount of whining over a $20 a month subscription to Photoshop, $10 the first year if you already have an earlier version...

I don't have a version of PS, I was gearing up to buy CS6 Production Suite when all this hit.

So far, I've not run into any performance issues running anything in my VM. Heck, I've run things like the Labview programming environment in VM with Win7, and my mac doesn't even seem to feel the hit at all.
Is PS more resource intensive than say, running Davinci Resolve? Granted, Resolve isn't in the VM, but I've had it running as the same time as VM of Win7 with apps running in it, and there doesn't seem to be any perceptible performance hit.

Is it 'well known' that PS doesn't work well with a VM?

Just curious....I've not had any problems running stuff in VM so far....

I've got a macbook pro (late 2011 model), maxed out cor i7 processor for that model, and 16GB ram. Would that still not be enough to run PS in a VM of Win7 in your opinion?

IMO it is 'well known' that all resource intensive apps runs slower in a VM than as native apps.

If you are working with a Photoshop tool and it lags even a little extra because you are running it in a VM it will be a pain to work with.

Since you are not already using PS, why not just try out Pixelmator for a while instead? It is not Photoshop, but it is cheap and pretty good.

But really, the best option would be to take a deep breath, relax, rid yourself of the subscription fear and subscribe to Adobe CC. If you were planning on getting the Production Premium you want to edit video as well, right? Adobe CC is a pretty good deal if you use PS + Premiere + LR. Buying the boxed version might allow you use it indefinitely, but in a few years time you probably don't want to...

In response to other postings regarding Scott Kelby's Q&A - Scott says that at some point in the future if you don't like an increase in price you can simply stop paying.  This is utter nonsense since you then lose access to your data!

That is utter nonsense. If you decide to stop your subscription just batch convert your PSD's to an open format.

It happens all the time, not in big numbers of course, but it does happen. Things go wrong and the small guy wont be able to fight it. What happens if your account get's hacked and the hacker does something bad so your account get's blocked? Imagine this happens during a big job and all of a sudden you can't deliver to your client. You might get your account back eventually, but by the time the client might be gone already.

When you are using CC you are still working with locally installed software, working on local files. In a worst case scenario you would have to create a new CC account and spend $20 for a 1-month Photoshop subscription to be up and running in 5 minutes, or just take your files to a buddy who also uses Photoshop.

What version of Photoshop are you using now? Why not stick with that as long as you can instead of throwing good money at the sinking CS6 ship?

It's sloppy engineering and sloppy user experience.
While it maintains a single code base (good for the developer) it has a poor user experience (bad for the people who actually pay for it) and it installs unnecessary bloatware (Mono) which will most likely only be used by this product but takes up valuable disk space and risks compatibility problems with other software on the Mac.

Sloppy user experience, probably, but sloppy engineering? Bullcrap. It only makes sense to write a native client for Mac if there is enough of a market to justify development costs and if Reikan has the resources to maintain two codebases.

Mono taking up valuable disk space? This is indeed 2013 and not 1993... disk space is cheap, the size of mono is insignificant. And Mono will not give compatibility problems for any other software not using Mono.

I would prefer a native app yes, but I would also prefer a Mono app instead of no app at all.

otherwise it would make no difference to delete the junk when you do keywording.

Exactly! I would  say even without doing any keywording that as long as you actually look at the photos after transferring them to your computer it doesn't take any extra time to hit delete instead of next.

Storage cost doesn't factor into the decision at all for me, storage is cheap.

I rarely delete photos in camera since it is slower than deleting them on the computer, and sometimes you can't really tell if it is a keeper until you see it on a bigger screen.

I try to delete at least some of the weaker images as I go through them the first time since I think it saves time. Cmd-Delete instead of next doesn't really take that much longer.

I too would prefer having 10,000 images some years down the road rather than 100,000.

And where exactly is this local zoo?

The photos are from "Kristiansand Dyrepark" in the southern part of Norway. http://www.dyreparken.no

It is a really nice zoo, and just a 35 minute drive from where I live. I often go there with the wife as an alternative to going for a walk somewhere else. Even after 30+ visits over the last few years there is still something interesting to see every time.
